Steelbooks are simply a new marketing idea for dvd's. They (the studios) have found out a long time ago that limited edition, special edition, boxed sets, multiple discs, special packaging, etc. sells more dvds. Steelbook is from a company based out of Scandonavia (sp?), and they hit the European market a few years before here, and they were (are) a big hit. I stumbled across Steelbooks not knowing much about them, but once I saw the logo inside the case, searched the net, found the company, found forums, joined in on said forums, and started seeing more out there, I started collecting them. If you don't have a tendency to collect anything, then it will be hard for you to understand the whole concept. If you do collect ANYTHING, be it diecast cars, shot glasses, rock concert shirts, etc, then you understand right away the whole steelbook thing. Granted, some movies in steelbook I would never buy, but if I know I'm going to like the movie, and there's a steelbook I can get at a reasonable cost, then I'm going...

I usually describe it as 'loose' like it's missing some adhesive. Like in the middle of the spine it is okay but at the ends it is slightly loose and ever-so-slightly raised from where it should be; upon holding it down (or putting it in between dvds) it looks fine, b...

I own only 3 steelbooks: Planet Terror, Black Lagoon (The Anime), and La Femme Nikita. In all 3 cases, they were movies I didn't already own that I really loved and wanted in the best possible packaging. I would NEVER buy a movie I found only marginally entertaining or somewhat boring just because it's in a steelbook packaging, that's no different than just buying whatever the new DVDs are each week just because you want to inflate your numbers.

Quality of the MOVIE/TV SHOW ITSELF is what matters to me. My movies are all showing their spines anyways. I have tons of box sets and special collector's boxes (Blade Runner (2 versions), stuff like that) but it also has to do with the fact that the DVDs themselves are kickass.
I would rather save a couple bucks and get the exact same thing than worry about the packaging. well it's not like it's just the packaging around a single disc version with bare bones extras... the steelbook version dvds are the special editions (uncut and extended versions if applicable) of these movies... it's exactly the same as if one were buying a 2-disc edition of a movie you like... i can see if someone were to just buy steelbooks, even of movies that are not good, just to have a steelbook, but for most of us, we get the steelbooks of the movies we like...

The cover art is usually ten times better on the steelbooks as well. I am big fan of simple designs and the steelbooks almost always use simpler designs. Just look at the regualr Departed vs the Steelbook version its a hunderd time better. Same goes for films like Jungle Book, Cars, Shrek 3 and Ratouille. They don't feel they have to make the covers these convulted messes to catch the kids eyes with the steelbook versions.

I actually thought I didn't own a single Steelbook, which made me special, but while looking through my collection, I had forgot that I had the Boondock Saints steelbook, which I bought when it first came out since my regular edition was in pretty crappy condition. Also don't see the fascination with steelbooks, I think its cool, but there's several films that are released on steelbook, that I probably wouldn't even bother buying a regular cheap version of. So that leaves with only a very select few that I would consider buying,

I completely agree with Sir Dizzy, ive only started collecting Steelbooks in the last couple of months but it is the centerpeice of my collection. I have doubled up on 1 or 2 movies but these are my favourite movies and i love having the chance to buy my favourite movie in a collectors edition. But they are more of a treat than anything. I try to limit myself to 1 a month as otherwise it just becomes pointless!

I think for some its like say you own a really nice car and then you do a gorgeous paint job for it or add fancy rims. Steelbooks enhance owning the movie, they become a centerpiece to your collection. And I have to admit I have become a steelbook junkie, the only movie I had ever double dipped on until the last six months or so was the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings but in the last six months I have double dipped on six movies and five of them were steelbooks (X-Men, X-men 2, Platoon, Robocop and the Day After Tomorrow, I also got Memento but that was the 2 disk limited edition version that allows you to play the movie backwords with an easter egg and was not a steelbook). And I plan on getting several more double dips on steelbooks. But as far as expanding my collection, I own 1241 dvds for me this is expanding my collection, it is enhancing it.

i dont go nuts... like, i have the original 2 disc of Fight Club, i never double dipped for the steelbook (even though i like that packaging)... but if i hear a movie is coming to dvd and a store will have an exclusive steel book of that flick, i will buy the steelbook.. case in point... i already have my Cloverfield pre-ordered from FYE because of the steelbook! Same with Sweeney Todd and Beowulf! I just like the cases, and wish there was a way to just buy the cases for like 5 bucks, or a way that steelbook would make some custom cases by request, you pay a little more, but then you have a sweet custom steelbook for The Wizard!!
