Here Lynch is referencing to watching movies on your phone or your Ipod or Iphone. Obviously this is not the best way to experience a film at all. ANd I agree. You need a controlled environment. Your home, lights off, big screen tv. Not on the palm of your hand while you are on your lunch break or while your riding the bus. I think thats more or less what Lynch was talking about.

I have heard this argument with DvD's took over for VHS, and when the CD took over vinyl. Everybody eventually succumbs when the price fits there comfort level. I have a couple HD televisions in my home and broadcast TV looks great, so I can only assume that HDDVDs are going to be just as nice. I am in no hurry at all to get a player, I play my disks on $30 DvD players . . . I am cheap when it comes to this kind of thing . . . . I will probably never have as many HDDVDs as I have regular DVDs partly because the number is way to high to replace each of them, and it is unnecessary as the new players will play old disks and also because I am still waiting for certain titles to come out on regular disk . . . can you imagine how long it will take to get some of these rare titles on HDDVD?

I'm with the majority here; I'll wait for the prices to drop and in a few years start to buy Bluray here and there but I wont be replacing my collection. Personally I dont see that its such a big deal and its not really a "scam." At Sony they had Troy playing but it was split one side was normal DVD and the other side was Blu-ray. There was a difference but not one that would make me want to spend a grand on.

"Debacle?" Silly. If you don't want the BD, you can still get DVD. No one's forcing you to switch. For those who are videophiles and have the technology to see the difference, it's far from a "debacle". It's like going VHS to DVD in quality improvement. It's not some scam to provide the customer with the same product at a higher price. People like me are hoping the price reduces, 'cause I'd love to be able to get more BDs. DVD still rocks, but if they were within three dollars of one another in price, I'd got BD 99% of the time. There have been like 25 threads on the exact same topic, but I find myself getting less and less descriptive with my reply. In two years, when a BD player is $100, it'll become more commonplace in households. People pissing and moaning about "I'm not going to replace my DVD collection," yadda yadda... same shit was argued over DVD replacing VHS. I'm not saying BD is going to be a winner format, and I also won't say it's "stupid" to stick with D...

I'm in the process of converting my library over to Blu-ray as they are being released. It's only a matter of time before the studios stop releasing their films on standard DVD and exclusively on Blu-ray. I'll be ahead of the curve, and I suggest the rest of you do the same.

I'm ready to embrace the technology but as of now there isn't a great enough incentive for me to make the switch (ie, I don't have the money). Right now the only reason for me to switch to Blue-Ray would be for new releases; i'll be honest, I want to see Daniel Day Lewis' drool shimmer as it drips from his mouth. But I mean, I really have no interest in upgrading the movies I already have. I've already seen Terminator 2 at the movies, on vhs, and DVD... seeing it at 1080 resolution doesn't really excite me. Also I consider myself more of cinephile... I'm much more interested in seeing movies i've never seen before, as opposed to seeing the same ones at a higher quality... and even now, there are plenty of good movies that haven't even found their way to DVD!

I think people need to chill on this Blu Ray/DVD "war". There really ISN'T a war at this point. Blu Ray is in ADDITION to DVD's, ala Laser Discs when VHS were around. Will the format win out? Most likely, because why the hell would people want something that isn't "top of the line"? It'll become affordable once more people switch over, but the format is still very much in its infancy, hence the high prices. Look at DVD's when they first came out. Is there a noticeable difference between Blu Ray and regular DVD? Hell yes there is. If you can't see that, you have GOT to be blind. More depth in the picture, a whole hell of a lot of more detail, and a much crisper picture is something that I want to enjoy my films in. It really is like looking through a window. Check out a film in proper 1080 and try to tell me that it doesn't look better then a DVD. Technology will only get GREATER with Blu Ray too. Plus, you can store so much fucking stuff on a Blu, DVD will just be obsolete in the future. ...

If you like your DVD's then you don't have to upgrade to Blue Ray. Just because there is another format out there doesn't mean you have to get all you old DVD's on Blue Ray now. You can still watch DVD's on a Blue Ray system so you can just buy new stuff on Blue Ray. I don't have a Blue Ray system and don't plan on getting one anytime soon.

I don't give a shit about Blu-Ray. I'm very, very happy with my DVDs, and I have no intentions of ever upgrading. I'll only upgrade if they force me by stopping the release of DVDs -- and if that happens, they better fucking lower the prices for Blu-Ray players and DVDs, and the players better play regular DVDs as well, because I'm certainly not re-buying every single DVD I own. Yeah this is garbage. Anyone who goes out and buys a Blue Ray, IMO, is being suckered into something that isn't all that great. In all honesty, there is a better picture on BR, but like mentioned above, I don't need to spend $1,000's to see something a little bit clearer. It is the same when CD's came out. They had an article in Rolling Stone not to long ago that talked about the piss poor quality of a lot of CD's and mp3 files compared to the quality of records. The sounds you normally would have heard on records you can't hear on traditional CD's becuase producers nowadays crank up the bass. (i.e. you miss out on percussion, violinst, and other things you normally can't hear) I love DVD's, and I can't see myself ever switching over to BR becuase I have built up such an extensive collection of DVD's. IMO, there is not that big a difference in quality (yes I have seen a movie on BR). The only scenario I can see myself having to switch over is if the studios stop producing DVD's. If that's the case, God help ...

right now blu-ray players are massively sold out and are in high demand. The movies have come down drastically, to where you can get them for around $10-19 on certain sales. It's exactly as DVD was.. expensive, but eventually affordable. What not many people seem to understand is that you don't have to switch to blu-ray. I have a blu-ray player, and over 1200 dvds.. and I only have 12 blu-ray discs. I have 2 movies that I bought over again in blu-ray, because of the insane quality (Pirates 1, 3). My dvds look even better then they do before in the blu-ray player.. Raiders of the Lost Ark looks incredible, and that was an 83 release. Even the original Star Wars films look great. I only buy blu-ray with the new movies that come out, or if it's something that will really look fantastic on blu-ray. Like.. Lord of the Rings, Pixar Films, Harry Potter films, 2001, etc.. I'm very happy with my blu-rays, but I still buy more dvds then I buy blu-ray discs. The last blu-ray movie I bought was No Country For Old Men, w...

Me too man, Im really happy getting great movies for less then 10 bucks. Even if they are used, they are usually in great conditions! Almost like new! So why bother? The thing that really bugs me though is that they would try and force us to buy blue ray by not producing dvds. That would royally suck! Eliminating a format, not because theres a genuinly better one, but just to force movie buffs to buy all their movies again. Fuck you ass holes!

Im of the school that thinks that this whole Blue Ray thing is just a scam to get us to buy all our films all over again so the studios can make more money. This new format seems forced to me, it feels like it is genuinly unfair to have people build up their movie collections on what is still a great format that serves all our movie watching needs...only to the have a new format emerge without any real need for it. I mean honestly...werent they selling dvds as having perfect picture and sound? Suddenly, no, dvds arent that great, now Blue Ray is the "look and feel of perfect"? Please, stop trying to scam me. How long before they decide to jam an even more perfect (is there something better then perfect?) format and you have to buy all your films all over again? How long before Blue Ray is left behind and then they come up with something different but the same? I mean I could understand the change between VHS and DVD. DVDs were clearly better. You didnt have to worry about the tape getting jammed in...
