One person mentioned the 642, another mentioned the 5140. I think the current, newest Philips is the 5982: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP5982-1080p-Upscaling-Player/dp/B000N254LU It also plays DivX and Xvid, so that means if you download an AVI TV show from Bittorrent, it'll probably play that as well. | | Static Link |

No true Chinatown here, although there are many clusters of Asian businesses (e.g. a strip shopping center with a dozen different Asian businesses, from restaurants to nail salons), so they might be useful. Same thing happens around here with Indian, Brazilian, Arab, Israeli and other nationalities. | | Static Link |

Probably involved chicken blood and burnt sage. I love having a region free player, not because the disks are cheaper, but because Hong Kong, Japan, Europe, and Great Britain release disks you just can't get here in the US. As you well know. I have a Pioneer DV-K-102, which is probably no longer manufactured. I bought it seven years ago and it works just fine. A newer model I have is a Toshiba SD 3990, a more compact model, with some very valuable features, e.g. when you display the timing of the disc you're watching you can see how much more time there is on it, so you can get an accurate timing of a disc just by pressing a button. It also has a wider range of variables for rewinding and fast-forwarding. The only problem is, when you turn the machine off, it doesn't go back to the spot you stopped watching at on a disc. You have to fast- forward to where you were. I bought both in Chinatown, the first for $400 cash, the second for $130 cash. | | Static Link |
