You really care about the two lead characters and the things they go through as their serving their prison sentences. Each supporting character, whether it's the warden, other inmates, or the guards, compliment Robbins and Freeman and, along with the excellently written story, help develop the characters and the plot. This is a superb story of friendship, redemption, hope, and character. 9/10 | | Static Link |

OK, seriously Shawshank was voted 3rd best movie of all time by this stupid thing I saw on telly, voted for by British viewers. At the time I was disappointed, but IMHO it certainly deserved its spot more than The matrix deserved "15th Best Film Ever Of All Time Ever". Hmm, yeah, right. Although I'm one of the few people not to give this a 10/10, I still really enjoyed it. I was worried about the long runtime before watching this movie, thinking I would probably be kind of bored, but thankfully that never happened and I was interested the whole way through. I'd give it a solid 8/10 (A-). | | Static Link |

I mean Robbins and Freeman are alright, but the movie is just standard hollywood tripe. The whole movie is boring, and, I repeat, it's just a dressed up after school movie. I find it hard to believe how many people love this movie. This is one case where the system triumphed over you. bob's grade: 2/10 | | Static Link |

If you watch Escape from Alcatraz (1979) you will realize that this movie is almost a total rip off. but putting that aside which i have a hard time doing im giving it a 6/10 and im still giving it the thumbs up. | | Static Link |

Cast: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, William Sadler. Screenwriter: Frank Darabont, based on "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" by Stephen King. Producer: Niki Marvin. A Columbia release of a Castle Rock film. While a successful writer, Stephen King has a bad reputation when it comes to the film versions of his work. Children of the Corn and Maximum Overdrive are some of the most frequently cited examples of how difficult his works are to translate to film. Granted, there have been exceptions, such as Misery and The Green Mile, that have won critical and commercial acclaim, but these are relatively few and far in-between. As a rule, his non-horror writings tend to work better on celluloid. Still, no one, not even King himself, could have predicted the overwhelming praise bestowed upon The Shawshank Redemption, helmed by a then-unknown director. If you're looking for cheap thrills and "boo" moments, you won't find... | | Read Entire Entry |

It's in my top 100 of all time surely. It's funny because even when it comes on cable (and that's like once a week!) I just CAN'T turn it off! I just can't seem to watch poor Andy go thru all the crap he does and not sit thru to the actual redemption. The scene where Morgan Freemand walks thru the field to the find the prophetic "tree" just warms my heart like no other. | | Static Link |

It really didn't absorb me into the story, and it wasn't really that powerful. It was an okay movie, yes, but it's not as great as people always proclaim it is. | | Static Link |

It's hands down my favorite movie of all times, which these days is an unoriginal choice. This movie is probably an eleven on a scale of 1-10 (10 being best). It more than succeeds because of the great story, and dialogue, and acting, and ending! For once we have an ending that lives up to the rest of this wonderful movie. Because I hate those so-so movies with great endings. I'd rather a movie be great before the great ending if you know what I mean. | | Static Link |

Everytime i watch it my mind blocks out everything else, and i actually feel the emotions of the characters. There arent many movies i can say do that to a person like me. The plot, characters, settings are all magnificent, and excellently structured. This movies end brings tears to my eyes, and there is not one other movie that can do that. The score makes the movie flow, and captures the feel of a prison. How Andy and Red converse is pure poetry, and if i had one movie i would watch forever it would be this because every movie you watch you can remember, but only this you can't forget. The Shawshank Redemption 10/10 with no doubt in my mind THE QUINTESSENTIAL FILM! The Handeman God Bless America & Movies | | Static Link |

Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufresne, a city banker, wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. He is sent to Shawshank Prison in 1947 and receives a double life sentence for the crime. Andy forms an unlikely friendship with "Red" (Morgan Freeman), the man who knows how to get things. Andy faces many trials in prison, but forms an alliance with the wardens because he is able to use his banking experience to help the corrupt officials amass personal fortunes. The story unfolds.... I was so impressed with how every single subplot was given a great deal of respect and attention from the director. The acting was world-class. I have never seen Tim Robbins act as well since, Morgan Freeman maybe (e.g. Seven). The twists were unexpected, an although this film had a familiar feel, it wasn't even slightly pretentious or cliched, it was original. The cinematography was grand and expressive. It gave a real i... | | Read Entire Entry |

The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite movie of all time. I feel great every time I watch it. Tim Robbins and especially Morgan Freeman were so incredible. I love the story, the sets, the music, everything. I don't care what the Academy says, Forrest Gump doesn't hold a candle to this movie. 10/10 | | Static Link |

</font> Well JoBlo.......I think The Academy Awards are like a box of chocolates.....you'll never know what you're going to get Excellent review by the way. Back on the topic, the Shawshank Redemption (by the way I think the title is the worst of the movie) was an excellent flick. Darabont shows then (for first time in my opinion) that he is an excellent screenwritter and one of the premiun directors today. In my opinion this is the best between many good performances by Tim Robbins. My grade: 10/10. [This message has been edited by Zed (edited 11-14-2001).] | | Static Link |

It is the only movie that has almost gotten me to shed tears of joy. That is by far the most satisfying ending I've ever seen in a movie. Even on watching it home on video I want stand and cheer when it is over. Like Joblo said I don't mind watching this 10 times a year. I bet I've popped it in at least 4 or 5 times so far this year. There is not one bad performance, not one scene that drags, hell not one frame of film is wasted. Its one film where you are sad to see it get over no matter how many times you watch it. I forgot this was nominated in there with Pulp Fiction and Forest Gump. I really wouldn't have minded Pulp winning at all, but looking back no way FOrest Gump is even close. My only comment is that I think I could actually tolerate a prison sentence with inmates like these. Aside from the rapists of course, but not one of these guys weren't unlikeable. We'd all be honored to have friends like these. | | Static Link |

| Posted by: Dehydrator at November 10, 2001, 8:43 am | | Topic: Video Capsule: The Shawshank Redemption (10/10) Forum: JoBlo | | Well, I don't see the movie THAT deep ( the only movie I would lable "inspiration" would be DEAD MAN) but it's definitely one of the most successful King Adaptions ( from a non-horror point of view ). Freeman and Robbins are damm near perfect in their roles and everything else is in high quality too. As you said Jo, the movie touches a lot of things and suceeds on all of them. That's quite rare, managing to come out with such a Positive message as "Fear can hold you Prison. Hope can set you free." ( although I always stumble when it comes to make use of that tagline in real-life), is even more rare. Must-see, at any rate. I wonder how I'm gonna swallow HEARTS IN ATLANTIS, likely to touch even more issues ( judging from the Book's point of view) | | Static Link |

Director: Frank Darabont
Starring: Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Gil Bellows "Get busy living or get busy dying" An amazing movie. Easily one of the best movies made during the 90s and definitely one of the top "prison" movies of all-time. Pretty much everything about this movie works and works extremely well! The film touches upon many subjects, including the ideas of hope, redemption, love, loneliness, justice, life/death, friendship, endurance, fear, patience, inspiration and so much more. Watching this movie always makes me feel a million times better, and if that's not the greatest reason to watch a film, I don't know what is. Give it up to both Freeman and Robbins for completely engulfing their characters with heart, soul and the spirit of humanity. I appreciated the message in this film, I absolutely loved the way it ended, I surrendered to its pace, I enjoyed all of its characters, I thought it was wonderfully photographed, I loved the score ... | | Read Entire Entry |
