(Nicholas Stroller, 2008) Judd Apatow has done the impossible. He has crafted, over the past few years, a series of movies that have sealed his name as a franchise; just as the name Quentin Tarantino attached to a crime movie means something to the movie going crowd, as such has Judd Apatow’s name attached to a comedy become to mean something similar. Whether he’s directing or just producing, Apatow and his troupe of actors, many of which appeared on his early, short-lived and underrated television program “Freaks and Geeks” bring a certain something more to the otherwise average romantic comedy genre. Indeed, like most of the previous movies attached to his name, Forgetting Sarah Marshall features a fairly simple, typical set-up and storyline for a romantic screwball comedy: A man is dumped by his girlfriend and he decides to take a vacation at the same resort his girlfriend and her new man are vacationing at, all the while falling in love with another girl who is clearly far more perfect for him. But Apato...

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - 8/10 After embarking upon uncanny success in The 40-Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad, there’s no doubt in my mind that when one thinks of surefire comedy in today’s cinema, one may as well easily connote to the Apatow troupe. With their unprecedented ability to craft completely natural, believable, and utterly relatable and realistic characters and situations as they have done since their humble beginnings on the short-lived television series “Freaks and Geeks”, it appears as if all Judd Apatow and his team want to do, rather than grossing us out or spoofing major elements of pop culture, is to show us the simple hilarities we experience in our own lives, be it through social insecurities, tumultuous relationships or unexpected pregnancies. Forgetting Sarah Marshall depicts the arduous, albeit totally universal pain and agony of ending a long-term relationship. Of course, this simple little plot can only lead to plenty of grand comedic payoffs, which it does, but never do...

The first half of the film really didn't do much for me and I only laughed a few times, but it really picked up for the second half, had me laughing a lot. Loved the song he plays in the bar 7/10

It was just unfunny, stupid, and who in their right minds would believe that women as hot as Mila Kunis and Kristin Bell would ever date a guy who looks like that? Lazy is what I found.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - 8/10 Obnoxious hype from Richard Roeper notwithstanding, this is probably my favorite film that I've seen this year. I laughed, I cried, I have a newfound crush on Mila Kunis; what more could I ask? Oh, perhaps a little rambling improv comedy from the Apatow regulars (Hill, Rudd, etc.) felt like scenes on the DVD deleted section, but I still laughed. Chuckles ranged from small ("Oh, the weather outside is...weather.") to gut-busting ("Take my eyes, but please, not the shirt!"). I identified with Peter a lot, the self-loathing, the ups, the downs, the...well, I won't go into too much detail. A great surprise for '08. Oh, and Mila Kunis is sooo hot. Did I mention I have a newfound crush on her?

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - 9/10 The Apatow crew have done it again! An absolutely hilarious film with a great script and many great and funny characters. Jason Segel does a great job with the script and the role, and Kristen Bell is smokin' hot. Paul Rudd has been in nearly every Apatow flick and always delivers the biggest laughs. The story is pretty simple, but the heart and hilarity that ensues keeps it from being just another generic comedy. It might not be the best Apatow flick, but that's like comparing great to amazing. Go see it! I can't wait for Pineapple Express.

where superbad went too far on the vulgarity and didn't go far enough with the heart, and knocked up went too far with the heart, forgetting sarah marshall i think gets it just right. just enough laughs mixed with a nice romantic story. the most balanced apatow production yet, i'd say. going back to the romantic bits, it's definitely more believeable in this go-round (than, say, knocked up). jason segel is much more charismatic and seemingly sweet person than seth rogen, which is one of the biggest problems of knocked up, in my opinion. mila kunis was adorable too. i hope she's involved with apatow in the future. p.s. billy baldwin was hilarious. and the jason bateman cameo better mean more collaborations in the future.

Hilarious and very human and heartfelt, with great loveable characters and excellent comedy without every feeling forced or like a set piece. Everything comes naturally from within the characters, and I think it has a lot of interesting things to say about relationships. So *** 1/2 for the film. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a funny, well written, character-driven movie. The movie flows really well with the characters helping keep the story interesting. We follow as Peter gets dumped by his actress girlfriend, goes on vacation to try to get over her, and then runs into her at the place he's vacationing. Along the way, we meet her new beau, a new love interest for him, and several hotel employees who add to the funny moments in the movie. I like how the characters developed during the movie; there's a rather awkward dinner scene where Peter and his new love interest, Mila Kunis, have dinner with his ex and her boyfriend. We see the characters' true feelings about each other, their true colors, and succeeding scenes continue the character development. The movie isn't totally hilarious; I don't think I laughed out loud at all through the flick, but there are several really funny moments. I also thought the movie was redundant in several areas; we see Peter crying A LOT, we see many scenes where he runs ...

I guess I liked this a lot less then most. When one of the preeminent film critics of our time (I'm looking at you Roeper) labels this film one of the 50 greatest comedies of all-time; your expectations can’t help but be high. Maybe high expectations were a problem because I found the movie to be very ordinary at best. Some humorous moments but nothing that warrants high praise. It’s warm hearted but borderlines on watching someone else’s vacation home video. Mila Kunis is phenomenal but EVERY other supporting character is more annoying then they are endearing or funny. It contains many chuckles but no laugh out loud moments. Sorry to say, nothing really special but certainly not bad. 6/10

Enjoyed the flick a lot. I'd rate it up there with Superbad, not quite as good as Knocked Up or Forty Year Old Virgin though, there is just something so personally touching (hehe) about those films. Knocked Up being my favorite of anything Apatow. I really like Apatow produced comedies (especially 40 YOV, Knocked up and This) because they do a good job of avoiding cliche IMO. For the last couple years I've felt that all Hollywood comedies just turn into shitty, predictable romantic comedies. 50 first dates comes to mind. *Spoilers* Paul Rudd was hilarious, the I'm inside you song, and Kenneth from 30 rock with his wife - all very funny. Not to mention "Animal Instinct" - Fuck that had me roaring. Favorite scene was when all four of them go out to dinner and get drunk. I could go on and on. Great flick.

What the motherfuck is a "meta" joke? And I think the self-referencing added to the jokes. You can tell it's Kristen Bell talking, and not acting, in some of those bits.

Why does there always have to be negative people shitting on a film. There are many films I don't like. Someone which get alot of praise (one being Juno) and I don't keep trying to put down the movie. I just say I didn't like the movie and leave it at that. Its my opinion.

I personally loved every minute of it. The Apatow crew haven't lost a bit of their touch and once again prove to body forth hysterical comedy with the establishment of utterly sincere, genuine, relatable characters - fleshed out to an uncannily naturalistic extent by the ever fearless and compatable cast. 8/10 - Sets a high standard for the comedies that are yet to come this year.

Actually, thinking about it - the movie is filled with these stupid meta jokes. When Sarah gets the news that her show is canceled and she says that she's just happy to get the chance to further her movie career - Kristen Bell is clearly referring to 'Veronica Mars'. And then there's a whole sequence at dinner about Sarah doing a movie about phones that kill people - a reference to Kristen Bell in 'Pulse' It could have used more though. Maybe some references to how Peter's dad met his mother and some flashbacks to Rachel in the 70s. No, no, actually - it should have just been the actors and actresses sitting around a table and riffing about their own lives.

It definitely has something to do with the actor being naked and the actual thought of filming that scene adds to the humor I found in it. Even still, how could you not find that whole situation funny. It was such an unconventional take on a break up scene and YES BECAUSE HE WAS NAKED. I also thought it was nice touch that they ended the movie that way as well, so not only did I think it was funny moocow, but i thought it was a clever plot device that started and ended this fucking GREAT movie.

The scene is funny because movies don't tend to have naked guys on them. The scene is in the preview, and obviously without nudity. Filming the scene without actual nudity would have been pretty easy. The scene is therefore funny because you're not really expecting to see the nudity, and then there it is. Most of the laughs I heard when I saw that scene weren't "oh my god what a funny joke", they were more awkward/grossed out/uncomfortable laughs because you don't expect a movie to start throwing penises at you 2 minutes in. This isn't exactly rocket fucking science here, it's not some complicated joke, but it is very obviously there. Also most people think being naked is being somewhat vulnerable. That's why when the joke is repeated near the end of the movie, it's not really funny and it's more of a happy moment, because it's not an awkward breaking up scene where you're naked and vulnerable, it's a happy reunion scene. HOPE. THIS. HELPS.

In the first scene, Sarah walks in, Peter opens his towel and waves his dick around. She's obviously seen him naked, so there's no horrified reaction on her face or something that would be funny. Then they actually show his dick and it's not a long take, just a quick shot and then they cut away. This happens several times. So it's not like the joke is that they're focusing on this penis for a long time (like it was in Walk Hard). I mean, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing funny about those scenes and the only thing we're meant to be laughing at is that this guy is naked in his own home where it's perfectly natural to be naked, in front of his girlfriend who has seen him naked probably millions of times.
