I haven't yet seen Brazil - I want to, but it's one of those flicks that I always forget to grab when I'm out - today for sure

My opinion on this is that Gilliams "wacky" style was perfect for this movie in which there is complete chaos and disorder in the world. It is a very big and complex film, so I dont blame anyone for not being able to watch it on one sitting. Ive had to watch it in parts myself, but every time I watch it I enjoy it inmensely.

Honestly, I don't see it as a masterpiece. I've never really gotten into Gilliam's "wacky" style and feel that it often takes away from the movie moreso than helps. Brazil is an example of it and is also a movie I can just never get through in one sitting. I always fall asleep half way through out of somewhat boredom but also restlessness. I have it on Criterion, so I know I've seen the intended version. I'm just not a fan of it

Goodfellas is Goodfellas...wondeful film and the commentary is cool...pick them up...save for a bit and buy them...Heck, goodfellas isn't all that expensive anymore. It just happened that those 4 movies were among the first I got on DVD, before the super editions were available, or before I knew about them. That Goodfellas DVD is really bad for such a great movie. Having to flip the disc over mid-film is a cinematic nightmare. I'm a huge Hunter Thompson fan, having read most everything I've been able to get my hands on. It's almost staggering that I haven't gotten that Criterion yet. Behind Goodfellas, that'd be number 2 for me to replace. Quote: Originally Po...

I just watched it for the first time recently and enjoyed it, though I admit it was a lot to take in. I'll be ready for a second watching soon, I know there is more there that I missed. One thing about Brazil: it is fucking HILARIOUS. I don't know why but I didn't expect it to be nearly as funny as it was. I mean... Gilliam's a former Python and all, it makes sense.

Damn, I need to get that special edition. I've heard very little about everything behind the movie aside from the multiple ending issue and some of the differences in the versions. This, 12 Monkeys, and Fear and Loathing are only 3 of 4 films I have on DVD, (the other being Goodfellas that you have to flip over in the middle...) that I would jump on a chance to replace with a better version. I never do that with movies, but these movies I feel like I genuinely am missing out on by not having the Collectors or Criterion editions --- It's kind of neat that 3 out of the 4 are Gilliam films. If not for the Goodfellas disc being so annoying, I wouldn't bother, but will the 3 Gilliam's I want just to hear the madman speak.

I've seen the "right" ending...from thre three disc collectors set...I saw the happy ending too, but that was as an excersise in how to ruin a film. Sam's final fantasy to me was always so sad, because I fell he (and Gilliam) earned it...but when it's smashed to bits and he is left in the interrogation room at the end, it fits perfectly with the them as well as his fantasies from before, which also ended badly...so yeah.

Actually, it depends on which ending you've seen. I've only ever seen one ending and one ending only, and it's not a happy one. The constant fantasy segments pretty much develop that Sam is prone to deep and farfetched visions when under a great deal of stress. We also see that at any instance within Sam's dreams, that what he fears is having 'Big Brother' slam down on him just before he's able to fully escape into happiness. For the ending I saw, these segments not only provide more insight into Sam and help with some irony later on, but also provide nice parallels with the overall storyline, bordering on predicting the future events in the film.

Well, it's clearly an absolute masterpiece. Commenting on the fragile social unrest of our world today, with terrorists, bureaurocracy, a totalitarian government, a man whose dreams are restrained by the requirements of society for him to fit in his box... And besides that of course there is the absolutely INSANE production design and cinematography, plus Gilliam's Pythonesque sense of humour. It's just an absolutely outrageously good film, no doubt about it!

I love this film...all of it. I dig the cool dialogue and buraracy centric future and style and the contrast to the fantasies. Great characters and of course funny and scary at the same time. One of the best final shots ever in my mind... which version did you watch, as there are 5 in total. my reccomendation to you is to watch it again and decide if you like it or not. I did this with LA Confidential and loved it... Same with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas sometimes movies need a little extra time and attention to figure them out (not just the plot and such, but, as you said, how you feel about it)

Not in terms of the story but whether I actually liked it or not. I know the general consensus is that its a masterpiece and I did appreciate the excellent art direction and themes throughout the movie, but I dont actually know if I fully enjoyed it or not. To me some parts were just too bogged down in trying to make this film too majestical and had unecessary parts and scenes. So what were your opinions on the film? Comments on the themes?
