I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves "Gangs", PSU80. While I haven't written a formal review of the film yet, it is without a doubt one of my favorites. I think it has the best opening ten minutes of any film I have ever seen. Daniel Day-Lewis got robbed at the Oscars.

This is one of maybe a dozen films I've watched in my entire life that I will never get tired of. I give this film a raving and ranting 10/10 Daniel Day Lewis gives his best performance ever. I think Decaprio gracefully sheds his "pretty boy" reputation he got from "Titanic" and shows his true talent. And since this movie is historical it automatically puts it in my top three favorite films ever. Your thoughts?

I loved this movie when I saw in the theathres. The directing/score/acting was all top notch. Daniel Day-Lewis stole the show as Bill the Butcher. Lewis should of won an academy award for that role. Great movie, it is long. Worth sitting through though. 9/10

Great film. Easily Scorsese's best. Yes, his best. I went in not expecting much because I hadn't been impressed with anything of Scorsese's and when all was said and done I loved the movie. Fits quite snugly into my Top 25, actually. I loved the story, the acting, and the action sequences. The opening shot of the Dead Rabbits walking out to meet Bill the Butcher is great. The music during that scene is perfectly placed. I was even able to stand Leonardo Dicaprio for a changed. Just one complaint. Someone please remind Cameron Diaz she's an unattractive skank. She was the most uninteresting character in the movie. Score - 9/10

Gangs Of New York. Strange film. Strange in the sense it feels rather choppy and amateurish at times and has inconsistent and unsuitable changes in tone and style. Scorcese has never been guilty of this before. What happened? Was the film badly rushed or what? Anyway, it has lot's to recommend and it kept me entetained, but it was a really inconsistent film. Went from great scenes to poor ones and back. Acting was a bit incoherent from DiCaprio and Diaz, but Daniel Day Lewis rocked. Cinematography was beautfiful, but editing was REALLY poor at times, and yet masterful in some places. Script was sometimes good, sometimes so-so. It was rather unfocused and didn't succesfully make it's mind about what story we are supposed to be seeing. Pacing was also off half the time. I liked the film, but it felt weird watching Scorcese delivering such an unfocused and sometimes simply amateurish directing job. Puzzling. 7/10.

Granted, it's not a pleasant movie, and not something I'd rent myself or that I want to see again, but I'm actually glad we had to watch it in school because it was a very good film. If we wouldn't have been forced to see it, I doubt I ever would have. It's not like I just go to the video store with the intent of renting a movie about Hitler and death camps. The only other one I saw was Dances With Wolves, which I saw when I was a lot younger and I...

OK EVERYONE, BACK TO THE MOVIE! Gangs of New York was fucking terrific. It had marvellous set pieces, incredible direction, lots of character development, great music and beautiful cinematography. And Daniel Day Lewis' Bill the Butcher is one of the most engaging characters to ever grace the screen, and Day-Lewis himself is absolutely incredible and was robbed of his Oscar. The Academy OWES him now. Leonardo DiCaprio is good in his role, and very entertaining to watch if his accent was sometimes off. I think Cameron Diaz deserved an Oscar nominatin, she was terrific, playing plenty of emotions to the perfect effect. Martin Scorsese is a director I haven't seen much of, but Gangs of New York intrigues me to see more of his work. I like seeing movies about America's history because I don't live there and am not knowledgeable about these things. When great stories like this come out of American history, it intrigues you if you're a foreigner (or a Kiwi) and you want to see more. A brilliant film. 10/10 #2 on my...

Someone that didn't like the boring over rated crap of BRAVEHEART!!! I saw GONY with a friend of mine, he didn't like the movie. But he saw it again the other day and really liked it, he said something like "I saw what Scorsese wanted to show this time" and changed his rating of 5/10 to an 8/10. So I think I'll give it another chance...

the first time i saw gony, i found it to be very dull, and a waste of my time with the exception of day-lewis's performance. the second time i watched it however, i saw the vision on scorsese's part. the movie alltogether was much more enjoyable. in the end, i advise everyone who didn't like it to give it another chance. for me, is went from a 5/10 to an 8/10. good movie.

Daniel Day Lewis performance was one of the best I have EVER seen. Leonardo DiCaprio also gives a good performance a tad shy of Catch Me If You Can or The Beach but still a good one. 9/10

I thought this movie was gonna suck big time and I was a little surprised when I saw it. It wasn't very good but definitely not the shitty movie I was expecting. All the cinematography, sound, etc, is amazing of course. The direction by Martin Scorsese is good too. The performances are great, especially Daniel Day-Lewis who was robbed at the Oscars this year. The plot of the movie was nothing special though, the same old story about New York. Overall it was a very enjoyable movie, and maybe it's just me but the last shot of New York City and U2's beautiful song playing was just...AMAZING. GANGS OF NEW YORK - 7/10 (B)

Plot: "It's 1860s Manhattan. The crime-plagued city is run by corrupt politicians of the Tammany Hall era, and gang warfare between the powerful Manhattan Irish gangs escalates into deadly draft riots. Against this backdrop, a young man (DiCaprio) teams up with a pickpocket (Diaz) to seek vengeance against the man (Day-Lewis) who killed his father." To call Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York a mere "guy flick" is to do it a great disservice. Romeo Must Die or Exit Wounds are "guy flicks," this is an epic that manages to fuse a tale of revenge, corruption, race, riots, and love into an epic that feels both optimistic about the city's future, but post-apocalyptic at the very same time. Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis are both excellent and stunning as Amsterdam Vallon and William "Bill The Butcher" Cutting, the hero and villian of this piece, but unlike other recent epics, those two roles are not that well-defined. Vallon, while we do root for him to get his reve...
