Interesting facts: - There will be an extended/unrated Director's cut. The DVD(s) should be out in August. - A handjob scene between Stacy and Eric tested negatively with audiences; it was cut from the final film. - The original ending (which will be in tact on the DVD) didn't sit well with Steven Spielberg, who suggested that they have it have more hope. They of course changed it, and test screening reports were all of a sudden more positive.

I don't really understand how one can bash the film because of characters who are unlikable. I found them to be a realistic group of kids who you could find walking the campus at the nearest University. They weren't stereotypical cookie-cutter figures. While the film did incorporate the "final girl" element at the end, I found it to be different than other recent horror films in that the final girl in this case wasn't the virgin, or the pure, kind one. She was pessimistic, panicky, and a wet rag - and I loved her.

3/10. had a free ticket so went and saw this in the afternoon. man it was laughable at best. i knew the vines were the villians so to speak but it was way cheesier that i expected. the did a horrible job with making me care about the characters. SPOILER AHEAD!!!!! then the one character i hated the most survived i wasn't expecting much but this was just absolutely terrible, almost embarrassing. the only reason that it gets a 3 is for a couple of semi-intense scenes and a few good gore bits. one of the worst films i've seen in the theatre recently.

*SPOILERS BELOW* I liked it. Yeah it wasn't the Great American Horror Classic or anything, but it was a fun ride, with decent acting and effects (except when the vines were creeping towards Mathias, and when Eric was de-vining Stacy) -- and yeah the ending could've had something to it.

Spoiler Not a bad movie by any means. Had no idea it was about killer plant life. There was some pretty good looking gore and it was midly suspenseful. I was also a little disappointed in the ending, but I'm still glad I saw it. 3/5

Finally convinced a few friends to see this with me last night. The Verdict? My one friend who didn't really want to see it really dug it, while one hated it and the other thought it was decent. I fall into the latter opinion. The good: The acting and chemistry of the four leads was believable, the vines inside of people were great, the gore kept me on my toes, and the movie was shot pretty well. The bad: vine CGI was lacking in scenes, I can definitely see how this worked 10 times better as a book, dumb decisions killed momentum at times, and lastly - but most importantly - the cop-out ending and lack of finale. Throughout The Ruins, I was eating up what was going down on the screen. I liked the pacing of the movie, the build-up, the way things gradually got worse and worse for our protagonists. The whole time I was thinking "This is pretty good so far, I bet the ending knocks this out of the water." Well, as if the film was purposely trying to disappoint me, we get one of the most anti-climatic e...

Yorrick, I partially agree with you on the opener. Kind of...well, cliche. Although I must say that I still like it because of the actress and her chill-inducing screams. I love the close-up of her screaming for help.

Pros: The filmmakers were able to creep me out with the gore, while not going completely overboard with it. The film was actually more suggestive in its suspense and tension filled scenes. The actors and actresses gave believable performances despite the outrageous situation their characters were in. I cared about the characters much more than a standard horror film. Possible SPOILER WARNING...I loved the scene where the plants imitated the sound of the cell phone...it was brilliant and intense. Cons: The pacing was much too fast, it seemed like the film just ripped through its 90 minutes without properly developing things. Although the psychological element was there on occasion, it should of been even more developed. This would've made the movie more effective in its scares. The characters were believable, but they needed a lot more development. We never learned much about them other than the basic overviews of their characters and what we learned from observation of their actions. This film is too straigh...

The amputation scene had to be trimmed down A LOT. The original cut had a longer and more brutal finish.

Having never read anything about the film before and not touching the book, when I quickly figured out what was going on at the ruins I kinda hoped I was wrong since it seemed kinda silly. I didn't think much of it overall, but the acting and some effective gore scenes (which never went ott) kept me watching. I've got the book and will give the film another watch after I've read it, might get more out of it after that. 5/10

Actually, my original score was struck down due to the book. The pacing was as if the book was on crack. I must admit that I am fairly biased in that the story is one that I was already rather fond of before entering the theater, but it ends there - I knew that the movie would either turn out good or bad. I gave the movie such a high score because I appreciate it for what it is: a nice little horror film with excellent performances, skilled direction and subpar technical skills. It got to me - that's something I can't say about most other horror films. I didn't "make" myself love it at all, and if I did it was very minor.

This movie was suspenseful at times but nearly all that suspense comes from the gore factor or being afraid of what kind of squeamish stuff the movie's going to pull off next. It was an entertaining hour and a half at the movies but nothing life-changing or earth shattering. Pretty forgettable flick. 7/10

It's either a remake of Asian horror (The Eye, Shutter, One Missed Call) or a remake of '70s or '80s American horror (Prom Night) or straight-up torture porn. Either way, 90% of it is garbage. The best horror these days is mostly foreign, whether Asian or European. So yes, it is refreshing to see something that isn't a remake of some kind. However, I think that clouds assessments of the movie, at least a little bit. That or a love of the book elevates what one thinks of the movie. It's a pretty generic horror movie when all is said and done. I am all for something different, something that isn't a remake, but that alone doesn't make a movie good.

Yes, I did infact see this disaster of a let down. I went opening day because i really had anicpated it. I don't say a movie is terrible just from a trailer that is never any indication at all there have been movies with terrible trailers and were great movies. I had really high expectations for it. Just seemed like it was going to be different. I find it funny that people are jumping down my throat beacause i didn't like the same movie they did. As for Meet The Spartans yes i also didn't like that but for that kind of movie you aren't expecting it to be that good so its less shocking when it's not. A movie like this where all the ebst scenes were in the trailer. Now i admitt I did like the beggining of this movie I thinkthat's really all I liked. As for the bad acting I am not saying the whole time it was bad it just seemed as in some of the highlight scenes of the movie it seemed kind of laughable. Alot of the scenes with the plants being pulled out of the body and just everyone having no reaction to the f...
