Totally agree, we had advanced so much yet once we reach the vastness and uncharted space, we become as babies...not knowing much of anything. And bound to have as many problems as those Christopher Columbus or any other explorer of unchartered lands had when they discovered 'new' worlds. | | Static Link |

It's one of the few movies that I actually had a difficult time selling to my friends. We tried to watch it but almost all of them fell asleep and didn't like it... but it's worth it for the few who did make the connection. It's an incredibly unique and truly incredible movie; from its unconventional structure to its otherworldliness to the mind-blowing cinematography and set design to the indescribably amazing third act. It's quite a movie, no doubt about it. Perhaps drags a tad in the middle though. 9/10. | | Static Link |

Clarke's books but one of these days I hope to do so. As far as the film is concerned I think it was Kubrick's most genious film (and for someone like him that's saying a lot) to me it showed how humanity had been able to become so much more advanced over the years yet there are still threats that we are succeptible to. | | Static Link |

It's one of those films best watched alone and with no distractions. you can get lost in it, it's mesmerizing. I never found it boring, personally. it's hypnotic. RIP Arthur | | Static Link |

One must be willing to accept it on its own terms in order to truly appreciate it. Having said that, I think it's safe to say that it redefined science fiction in the same way that Leone redefined the western or Psycho(1960) redefined horror. The SFX remain as awe-inspiring today as they did in (pre-CGI) 1968. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: biff_debris at March 21, 2008, 8:44 pm | | Topic: What are your thoughts on 2001: A Space Odyssey? Forum: JoBlo | | The film is a textbook example of showing a story instead of telling one. Most films tell stories -- either through the characters, or garish plot devices, or worse yet -- narration dubbed in later on. Kubrick just chucked all that out at the get-go and let the visuals do all the heavy lifting. 2001 is one of the major landmarks in film. | | Static Link |

Holy Jesus! I don't think people realize how impossible it is to do that. Gordon here hit the nail on the head. This film is almost an anti-thesis to all sci-fi films of that time. It was brilliant and still is the best sci-fi film to me. It is very creepy too, I think it scares me in a way no other movie has because of how little you know about its intentions past the halfway mark. Hearing Hal's last words singing Daisy Bell is unnerving and then all hell breaks loose. I also have to say the beginning 25 minutes is one the most entertaining moments in film history. I love those ape-men! They always make me smile. | | Static Link |

Moved from a 7 to a 10. Now in my top 20. | | Static Link |

A ballet of classical music and images strikes with awe and wonder. Chronologically the longest jump cut in film history. A futuristic science fiction movie that starts out with the dawn of man, and the most human character is an on board computer named 'HAL' - was at one time my favorite villain of all time. Its funny looking at it now what people expected the future to be like. But what imagination and thought went into the making of this film. You can see many strong influences to 'Star Wars', but instead the pacing is very slow, but to prove a point. What is also interesting is the lack of diegetic sound in the space scenes because there can't be sound in outer space because there is nothing for sound to bounce off of. In every other science fiction film I have seen that I can think of this is the only one that follows this rule. Now the ending can be left up to plenty of interpretation. We know that the monolith represents a key to the evolution of mankind. That Dave Bowman's s... | | Read Entire Entry |

Forum: JoBlo | | I've been meaning to read 2001 for years but still haven't bought it, I have 2010 but haven't read that one either. The sad news of his death makes me want to finally take a look at his works. I love Kubrick's 2001 though, I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen last year and I discovered a whole new appreciation for it (having only seen it once before a number of years ago). The mix of beautiful visuals and an excellent soundtrack blew my mind. I was so completely gripped by what was going on on screen both visually and with the characters and plot that I couldn't image ever calling it remotely boring, it was completely the opposite. Definitely not only Kubricks masterpiece but one of the best movies ever made. | | Static Link |

Brian De Palmas Mission to Mars. The use of all that white inside of the spaceship, Tim Robbins running inside of the spaceship on zero gravity, theres many scenes, plus, I believe there was an artificial intelligence that goes bad as well. Also Ridley Scotts Alien, all that stuff having to do with the ships computer going bad and Ripley has to reprogram it. All that is straight out of 2001. | | Static Link |

I mean it was made in 1968 and the effects work must have been mindblowing for audiences back in those days. No one had seen a science fiction film like that before it. I read that the book and the film where being made at the same time. As Clarke was writing Kubrick was already filming. And that the book wasnt even finished by the time the movie got made. Im going to be rewatching this one today no doubt! In memory of Arthur C Clarke. | | Static Link |

Clarke science fiction author extraordinaire passed away this past wednesday of respiratory problems. He was responsible for many great science fiction novels, amongst them 2001: A Space Odyssey and its many sequels on of which was made into a film in 1984 called 2010: The Year we Make Contact. I thought it would be good if we started a conversation about the Kubrick film based on his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ive never read any of his books, and Im no expert on him, but Id find it interesting if we could talk about: Comparisons from book to film. Is the book better? Is the film? What other Arthur C. Clarke books have you read? Which would you like to see made into a movie? Did you find 2001: A Space Odyssey (the film) boring? Do you think Kubricks film is a masterpiece? Why do think its still around? Why is it so memorable? How do you compare this film to other Kubrick films? R.I.P. Arthur C. Clarke 12-16-1917 to 03-19-08 | | Static Link |
