There's no doubt that Ebert totally takes him, both in taste and in understanding the essence of movies, although I agree that sometimes his reasons for disliking a movie are completely loony (he gave a poor review for Spielberg's War of the Worlds because "he didn't like the way the triopds looked". I mean, come ON!) | | Static Link |

But Ebert is the intelligent one of the pair, in his reviews and books he is able to summarize why movies are good or bad and why people love movies in the first place and he does it in a way that is clear, simple, and brilliant. | | Static Link |

A.O. scott is pretty good, but in all honesty when he recovers i'd rather just see ebert by himself. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: AceD at March 9, 2008, 12:24 am | | Topic: Your thoughts on RICHARD ROPER… Forum: JoBlo | | Roeper is my friend. On facebook (but it is the real Richard Roeper). Siskel was fantastic, but I don't mind Roeper on the show. He is always quick to plug under-the-radar stuff that he loves, and while just like any critic I don't follow his reccomendations, I like to see what he has to say. I feel like he's one of the few critics who give movies an equal chance and doesn't cater to Oscar bait or slam sequels and remakes. | | Static Link |

Both of them are cool. And Roeper IS the man! Seriously, Roeper is awesome. Screw the haters. Though I have to say I thought it was really cool when he had Kevin Smith and Jay Leno on his show. | | Static Link |

He ranked a movie... not by if it was an award contender... but if it was an entertaining movie. If it was an action movie... he ranked it as an action movie. If it was a comedy... he ranked it as a comedy... he didn't use a single bar to rate every movie like all of em do today. RIP That said I think Roeper is good... hes no siskel... but I like him. | | Static Link |

Siskel was always criticized for not being a real film critic (as was Ebert), but Siskel never seemed to try to be high brow or snobby. To me he was one of the the most genuine critics, he may not be the best, obveously. If he didn't understand something he admitted it (see The Sacrifice), and he also had interesting things to say about "art" movies (see The Double Life of Véronique, or Contempt). He always waed to be challenged by movies, he really cared it seemed.[/quote] He was good at getting his point across, I'll admit that. And theres nothing wrong with wanting to be challenged by a film, but he never seemed like he just let himself be pulled into the movies and have a good time with them. It almost seemed like he made up his mind whether he liked a movie or not before he even saw it. I'm making a huge generalization here, but thats justs how I saw him. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: BakeTheMooCow at March 8, 2008, 12:28 pm | | Topic: Your thoughts on RICHARD ROPER… Forum: JoBlo | | Roeper is just all over the place. He'll like horrible movies for the weirded reasons and that makes him unreliable to me as a critic. I still watch the show for A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips, both of whom I think are solid critics. If only it could be 'Scott and Phillips at the Movies'. | | Static Link |

It just seems even more apparent now that Ebert is off and he's paired with more thoughtful critics. I took A.O. Scott's sterling recommendation of...uh...Step Up 2: The Streets...to heart after...his review....no. I been thinking, well not thinking, but annoyed with the asshole from Rolling Stone. That guy may be the worst critic ever. Everything he writes it to get on the poster and the dvd pack, and being a big name like Rolling Stone he knows that over-the-top praise will get him on there. I think that Roper was added full time because he is a regular movie fan who loves the Oscars and the big Hollywood movies. He really didnt like anything that wasnt oscar bait. Or thats what it seemed like. Ya, he did like Die Hard 2 and Robocop, but he rarely ever liked anything that wasnt calling for an oscar. He was great at getting his point across but it just never seemed like he let a movie just entertain him. Ebert always seemed to have more of a good time than Siskel did. | | Static Link |

I mean really what exactly has he don that was so bad. I think hes a very good reviewer. Honestly I think A.O Scott should be permanent I think hes easily the best guest critic and they work well together. Yes we all miss Siskel but Ive always felt that Roeper has gotten some unfounded hate simply because hes in an unfortunate shadow. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: FatSakHead at March 8, 2008, 10:59 am | | Topic: Your thoughts on RICHARD ROPER… Forum: JoBlo | | Richard Roeper's an asshole and has too much of a shitty taste in movies to be taken seriously as a critic. Ebert is just....weird. Sometimes his reasonings for disliking or liking a certain movie can be WAY out there, and sometimes he's unprofessionally lazy in his reviews. Just because you've been in the industry long enough to get away with it doesn't mean you should do it. He still has more of a head on his shoulder than Roeper does though. | | Static Link |

I hope Ebert comes back soon, although he's been giving too many movies four stars since his apparently defective surgery. | | Static Link |

If the guests have shown anything, it's that while Ebert is obviously Motherfucking Roger Ebert (although has anyone else noticed he's gone a little fucked up in the head after the surgery?) Richard Roper is the best of the rest. He eclipses the fuck out of all the other guests on the show, now. | | Static Link |
