I learned about remakes in my film class recently and they saved cinema in the 50s too (Ben-Hur for example). I dont see that happening now, in fact, its pretty close to doing the opposite.

(Slater, Arquette, Oldman, Walken) I agree. I can't see this great movie being remade and can't picture anyone else in the roles, even the minor ones-Dennis Hopper as Slater's father and Bradd Pitt as the constantly stoned roomate are great.

Well, Badlands is my favourite film, and this ought to be easy because there's only a few important characters; Kit, Holly, Holly's father and Cato, but all the performances, especially Sissy Spacek's are just indelible pieces of screen acting. Behind the camera is just as tough... who the hell could you replace Terence Malick with? I'd want Roger Deakins to shoot it, his work for No Country for Old Men and The Assassination of Jesse James showed that he'd be a strong choice. As for the director, you want someone with vision, someone who makes great looking films and who works well with actors... Bring me Paul Thomas Anderson. Now the really hard bit... casting Kit: How about Joseph Gordon Levitt? He's young, handsome, and most importantly, a hell of a versatile actor who could bring a real intensity to Kit, without repeating Sheen's performance. Holly: I can't cast Jennifer Jason Leigh 25 years ago, can I? Guess not. It's a tough role because Holly is 15, so you need someone in her early 20's, who can play ...

Okay, I'm going to give this a shot. I just hope I don't go to hell for the blasphemy that ensues. Chinatown. Okay, to take over writing duties and rework or re-imagine Mr. Towne's script...I would hope for the likes of Frank Darabont. Just because I feel like he could write a really well-done throwback to true noir. It's...incredibly hard to think of someone to replace Roman Polanski. I mean, you can't get much better than him. But since we're re-imagining here, I'm going to give the reigns to someone that knows how to "re-imagine" things right, and give it to Chris Nolan. Here's the REALLY hard part for me: the cast. Okay, I'm not gonna go with the obvious first. I'll start with principals, than go into leads. Okay, Lou Escobar. Would definitely go with someone like Colin Farrel, since he basically played this same kind of role in Minority Report, and to this day it is my favorite role of his, so I'll stick with that. I'd give Toby Jones the role of Walsh, Jake's associate that utters the film's ...

Okay so I just got back from the bars and am really shitfaced so this might be a horrible idea but if I were to recast Fight Club Christian Bale as Tyler Derden would be pretty interesting. The dude would probably be more dark and sinister in his tone. Michael Pitt as the Narrator (Jack). One of my favorite young actors. He would play more of a slacker than a yuppie. Christian Ricci as Marla. She would be PERFECT in this role!

That is a really difficult question. My favourite movie is Touch of Evil. To replace Orson Welles as director, screenwriter and the bad lead/supporting actor with one person is IMHO not possible. Director for it? Probably Darren Aronofski. I think he could especially catch that surrealistic parts, especially after she gets out of the drugs and they had prepared all to get her shocked => to loose her mind. Charlton Heston I could never stand, I am aware he did some great roles in even greater movies (4 of them are in my favourite list, including ToE), but I simple 'hate' him as a person. => someone who can play the 'erectness', sympathetic, desperate, .... official state thingy (do not know the term), Hugh Jackman (who worked with Aronofsky before) or Gerard Butler (no, not because of his 300 work, I'm more impressed by other movies with him). Gary Sinise I could also imagine, depending how a new director would approach the story. Specialist for endurance, being on the edge for holding it together is fo...

I'd either A) Act as if it was an awesome comedy, because it was so fucking terrible B) Be like, well I kind of enjoyed that. If it is moderately good. C) Be like "Man that was pretty fucking awesome." if they did a Departed-style remake.

My favourite movie is being remade. I have had a year(+/-) to come to terms with that. I have not, BUT for the sake of the thread if I were in charge of casting the birds my lead choices would be as follows: Mitch (Rod Taylor)-Jake Gyllenhall Annie (Suzanne Pleshette)-Rachel McAdams Lydia (Jessica Tandy)-Melanie Griffith (plus she would be a great throwback) and finally Melanie (Tippi Hedren)-Kate Hudson (or a relative unknown just like Tippi was). Now that I have played the game though, wasn't Kaw just a cheap Birds rip-off just last year (even had Rod Taylor in it)? I didn't watch it, but it just seemed like someone beat Michael Bay to the punch!

I would actually like to see my favourite movie remade. Wonder Boys was a box office failure, and was even re-released because of its amazing critical reception...but still, people didn't see it. So if they could reimagine it to suit wider audiences I think it would be cool to see. Say for example, Michael Bay decided to tackle it. I know not a lot of people here like him that much, but let's face it: the man knows his audience. So if they could actually get a budget going and tweek the plot a little bit it could be very interesting. Like say, it starts out the same, the University Professor trying to finish his book, etc....but let's say he's actually a Super Hero as well! Hence, Wonder Boys. But the reason he can never finish his book is because he's always fighting crime and crap, and to boot, he's getting pretty old. And the turning point in the plot would be when his troubled student accidentally finds out his secret...and instead of freaking out or killing him, he trains him to be the next big super he...

I have trouble saying what is my favourite film, so I usually go with the original (non-voiceover) version of Chaplin's Gold Rush, because I've seen it more times than any other movie. I would be interested to see a remake, because obviously it would be very different. I think Coen Brothers would be a good choice, because they can do both comedy and action set pieces, and they could capture the silent film aura in sound film. Not sure who should play the lead, but there are many options. Robert Downey Jr. would be good if he were younger.

Hard to imagine anyone other than Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris being in Unforgiven. I guess I could see someone like Michael Gambon take on the Richard Harris role (kinda like he did in Harry Potter) and Denzel or maybe Ving Rhames taking over for Freeman. Deniro as Lil' Bill? Maybe. Can't see anybody taking over for Eastwood though.

Ghostbusters could be remade...I guess. That is, if you wanted to make something that fails. What made that movie so special was Murray, Akroyd, Ramis and Hudson interacting is just exactly the right way with each other. Will Ferrel doesn't have the range to play Ray, which is too bad because he'd fit otherwise. I can't think of a replacement for Peter or Egon that wouldn't require Murray and Ramis to reprise their roles. Probably, they'd just casts no names. Some asshole exec would probably stipulate that Slimer be given a larger role and have witty pop-culture laden one-liners. Euh...this is really depressing. I don't like this game.

Well, my all-time fave was The Exorcist, and I'll be God-damned if Friedkin himself didn't try to remake it. Just take all the things he said he wouldn't dream of doing to the film on his commentary of the 25th Anniversary edition, and compare to "The Version You've Never Seen". I have no respect for the man now. I finally conceeded that Total Recall is my new all-time fave, seeing as how I can't go three to four months without reviewing it. Honestly, it could be remade -- maybe more true to Dick's story, but it wouldn't be nearly as good a movie. The combination of Arnold and Verhoeven is just too perfect, too wonderfully surreal and gleefully violent and strange. Plus, no Jerry Goldsmith score? No fucking way.
