They should strip these award ceremonies down. There's no need for a three-hour extravagant event. Just give all the blood money to charity and have some guy read out the winners behind a lecturn | | Static Link |

So people tuned out. Yep, agreed. I felt that way when the nominees were announced..I had not seen ANY of the candidates for the major awards, and I'm sure for most people that watch for the Brad and Angies, etc..they were uninterested. I still rooted for No Country.. even though I had not seen it, since it was the Coen's, and I liked the actors I was familiar with in it, and had heard so many good things about it..I'm glad it won everything it did.. and I actually watched it two nights after it won..heh. | | Static Link |

It seems there are as many of these televised as the average reality show, and equally as boring. I guess as an East Coaster and the fact that something like the Oscars for me goes on til 1 am has kinda turned me off to all of them as a whole despite the boring/non boringness it might contain. | | Static Link |

Well, that can be said for any of these types of awards. Oscars, Grammies, Pulitzers, Nobels, heck, the only awards I've seen that manage to have a consistant level of quality are the Hugo and Nebulas. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Volante at February 26, 2008, 12:21 pm | | Topic: Lowest rated Academy Awards in history Forum: Film Hobbit | | Yeah...highest in recent history was when Titanic cleaned up. (55 mil viewers) Incidentally, the second lowest before this year's was 2003 (33 mil viewers)...which had Chicago ($170M), The Pianist ($32M), Gangs of New York ($76M), The Hours ($42M) and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers ($341M) Although you can probably discount Two Towers since after Fellowship lost, those fans probably realized AMPAS was waiting for Return of the King. Still, Chicago alone took in half of the combined total of this year. | | Static Link |

There weren't that many great ones, only a few good ones and the rest were meh. I hadn't seem anything that was nominated except Ratatoille and wasn't rooting for anything either. V I'd be very interested in that comparison of box office to Oscar ratings, of course it's not really gonna tell us anything we don't already know ... | | Static Link |

The only movie I'd seen was Sweeney Todd, so I didn't really care about what happened. And every time I looked up, yep, there's another montage. | | Static Link |

So people tuned out. Yup, I agree. I always enjoy the Oscars more when I've seen at least a couple of the big movies. This year I hadn't seen most of them and that kind of killed the momentum for me. I'm sure I will eventually see those movies but its hard to be excited about films and actors that I'm pretty much totally unfamiliar with. | | Static Link |

And I thought Stewart was terrible. He was alright last time, but this year I cringed every time he was on stage. I just don't know what was wrong with him. Didn't have long enough to prepare? | | Static Link |

Well, ok, I'm sure someone's done them, but I'm too arsed to look... Any volunteers? | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Josh at February 25, 2008, 7:00 pm | | Topic: Lowest rated Academy Awards in history Forum: Film Hobbit | | I'm sure the people behind the telecast would certainly prefer that. It's not just that they weren't American though, it's that they weren't big names and nobody had any idea who any of them were. Part of that is BECAUSE they weren't American, but mostly it's just a fame issue. Brad Pitt wasn't on stage and so no one cares. | | Static Link |

If you're on the West Coast, the broadcast begins at a respectable 5:30 and ends somewhere around 9:00, but if you're on Eastern Time the show begins at 8:30 and isn't over until after midnight. On a Sunday. In the middle of Winter. Maybe they should consider a different night and time as a trial run. Then maybe they should try eliminating the musical performances and endless tributes (I'm sure nobody has ever suggested that). | | Static Link |
