Maybe I just don't get annoyed so much because I'm not that picky... I don't mind if people check their cell phones, because when I get into the movie, I can phase all that stuff out. And if I'm not really getting into a movie, well, it probably isn't a very good one... I tend to whisper with my friends when we see movies. Sarcastic comments and stuff like that. And I don't mind filling people in if they go to the bathroom either...

I HATE f***ing cell phone checkers, damn lights are distracting. Occasionally they even talk on the damn things when the movie is on. But the underage drunks are the worst - loud, obnoxious...I've asked the ushers to kick them out several times in the past couple of years. I hate to admit it, but my wife is kinda bad too...if she has to go to the bathroom, she'll come back and expect me to catch her up, which distracts not only me but those sitting around us (which I hate to do). Sigh. And I'll never go to another movie like Memento with her again...she has a hard time following the backwards time thing, and needs it explained over and over and over again....

The one thing that I do not see here that you guys always complain about is parents bringing their kids to very inappropriate movies. I don't ever see bored kids start kicking the seats for any reason, or anything like that. The one thing I do occasionally get (this has happened maybe 2 or 3 times tops) is 7th grade brats who decide to throw popcorn at you... hasn't happened in a while though... like, not since I was 16 or so. I guess they picked on me because I looked closer to their age. No one ****s with me now, though

I don't even go to the movies anymore. I'm a DVD only fan now. My local movie house (there is only 1, it is a mega theater that crushed 4 others) wants $11 to get in, and $4 for a drink (two can worth) and $4 for a decent size popcorn and so on. Then I get in and have no rewind, volume control, pause and have to stay sitting upright the whole time. Add this to the other people talking, laughing, chatting on phones, phones ringing, caughing, sneezing, blowing noses, children making racket.....No. For the cost of a movie trip I can get the DVD a few months later. And watch it how ever many times I want, not just the once. I can lay prone on my couch or bed, volume control, snacks that cost less than a fortune, can pause for phone, bathroom, smoking, sleepy, anything. No crowds and all that entails. In short, the perfect viewing experience. The movie houses are simply not 'it' for me anymore.

rollafett, that sounds exactly like my dad. Though he usually advises us not to go to a movie if he thinks he will fall asleep... he's a snorer, and he gets really startled when you wake him up, so I often just let him sleep.

I really can't recall a truly awful filmgoing experience, however, I usually regret going to a flick with my dad. He simply cannot stay awake, and to make matters worse, he snores. Ugh. So I wind up having to wake him constantly throughout to which I'm greeted with a bewildered look and a snide "What?". Strange thing is that once the film is over and we talk about it, he remembers everything! I don't know how he does it.

Most recent experience was this past Saturday evening when I watched Beowulf (in digital 3D) - some highlights were the typical idiot foreign family that brings a 2 year old to a flick only to have the child freak out due to all the shrieking coming from the screen (from Grendel) and still not take the kid out of the theatre until last 20 minutes of the flick. Then the idjit sitting two seats from me proceeds to begin his Christmas present wrapping with so much paper krinkling that the person next to him threw their popcorn at him. . . surprise, it was his date! Also what is it with people checking their cellphones during the entire flick? Just turn it off for 2 hours and watch the flick! . . . or if your life is that busy, don't go to the damn movie theatre and wait for the dvd . . . Also what is it with people putting the feet on the chair in front of them? It is enough they are slobs at home that have to advertise that factoid to the rest of the audience . . .

To be fair, the building still exists, they just set up a church in it I think. I may be getting confused actually. Our local mall used to have a theater around the same time..very small, only like 4 screens. It was shut down around the same time, maybe a year or so later. They definitely hold church services there. The dollar theater might be something else, I can't remember. I don't drive down that road much anymore.

I miss having a local dollar theater. One near me wasn't half bad, and even used to have a drive in screen, but as long as I went to it, they never used it. They used to have 75 cent Monday's. The theater was shut down earlier this decade, and a church took it's place.

No. The theater is still standing. I think it only exists because it is in a town that is basically a self contained biosphere. There is no easy access to any highways and such, and the generic card board box like architecture is a hypnotic recurrent theme that fits in perfectly with the theater.

Well I can list the worst one of the top of my head. Odeon cinemas in my, home town its god awful in technical terms. It’s mostly down to presentational standards while most take it for granted expecting fine image and sound. It’s the sound that often fails to meet high expectations, with the growing increase in new technologies each year, or within a few months where some piece of hardware has become obsolete. The cinemas sound is considerable outdated in the PA loudspeaker area, the stage speakers date back to the 1960’s when they installed three Altec A4 for the old Cinerama era. Only 8 years ago they updated the cinemas Dolby processor which is the heart of the decoding process along with new amplifiers, but with the incredible demands of digital soundtracks with increased dynamic range where the amplifiers, are all up to the task, the loudspeakers fall flat on there face! And yes I’ve paid a portion over the years, to listen and listen is just about it. You can’t feel the emotional impact of larger than...

Did you see what all the fuss was about with "Gladiator". It was ok...but hardly worth all the rave reviews. Crowe was better in "The Insider" and "A Beautiful Mind", granted....completely different roles. One of my friends was embarrassing in "The Unforgiven", he kept cracking jokes about Clint Eastwood's lines and laughing away, people were getting annoyed...

Toys: some little kids sitting behind me started playing with my hair - running their fingers through it. Weird! Spider-Man - Hubby and I and some friends went to see the midnight showing the day it opened. The theater was packed, of course. Halfway through the movie, the film catches and we all get to see it melt and burn as its projected on the screen. And, we could smell it. The entire audience said, "Oh, Shit!" in unison. After a few minutes, they got the movie restarted, but there was about a five minute gap in the film. Gladiator: saw it with my sister in a cool little theater in Richmond, VA (The Byrd), which is usually an awesome place to see movies. There was one guy in the front row who was obviously the biggest fan of the movie of all time, and stood up and clapped enthusiastically at every single line Russell Crowe said. It was the most annoying thing EVER, and seriously ruined the movie for me! At the end of the movie he jumped up and ran out of the theater, I guess he knew he'd annoyed everyone...

I went to see the first Spider-man movie with my best friend, and the kid sitting at the end of our row had a slinky. It wasn't a plastic slinky, either. It was one of those metal ones that make a ton of noise. He was playing with it during most of the movie. He dropped it once or twice, but he went and got it each time. The kid was 10 or so, old enough to know better.

Probably the time I went to see Freddy vs. Jason. The theater was packed and very noisy, which probably was to be expected. Chris and I could only find seats on the end, and the six people sitting to my left got up to leave probably about a dozen times during the movie. I finally got pissed off, yelled at them, and then refused to move if they wanted to leave again.

ha ha, the opposite situation being to have the entire cinema to yourself. In early 02 my partner came to visit me in New Zealand. I couldn't get any time off work so he had to amuse himself during the day. He decided to go and see FOTR at the local multiplex to see what all the fuss was about. Only person in the cinema! And not exactly a low profile movie either.

I'm suprised I didn't mention this when I posted in the Grudge 2 film thread, but that had to be the worst experience I ever had in a theater. The first time me and my friend went to see it, it was packed with teenagers. Alright, it's one thing to be scared, but these guys were like laughing and yelling stuff like "Oh snap" at the theater. So, we ended up leaving in the middle of the film, got a refund, and came back to see it the next day. I think we realized that our audience must have known it was a dumb movie from the start

Steve and I went to see Bad Santa and the theater was mostly empty. There was some idiotic group of adults sitting nearby laughing hysterically through the whole thing. The movie wasnt THAT funny and they were bursting out laughing even during parts that werent really supposed to be funny. They were so loud and annoying that it completely killed the movie for us.
