| Posted by: Binkleywalker at January 10, 2008, 5:31 am | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | | Alan does certainly rock the actin' thing. I knew he was great at the action/serious/bad guy stuff, but what I liked were his comedy chops as in Dogma and Galaxy Quest. I know how you feel though, there are just those kind of actors who excel or smply stand out more in niche roles like being bad guys that you miss it when they don't do it as often. For example, I also like John Cusack's stuff, but he mostly does romantic type serious/comedic movies (which are also good, just not always in the mood for). When I saw him in that western he did a while back with John Goodman, I thought this was a guy who should do more westerns. Just like Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot should do nothing but westerns or crime dramas | | Static Link |
| Posted by: zanarkand at January 9, 2008, 7:04 pm | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | | It aint that I thought he vanished, I just thought he had what it took to be the 'essential' villan. From what I gather most people agree, but it seems that Alan wanted to do more with his skills than menace heros for 90 mins and then get killed at the end. In this whole thread there aint one mention of disappointment with any roles he has done, showing that Alan has range beyond being the bad guy. Now that I think about it, it is odd that not one person gave him a thumbs down on any project! Thats actually a bit amazing! Go Alan! | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Pwalex at January 9, 2008, 6:56 pm | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | | ****, Alan Rickman is one of my favourite actors. And I've been seeing him everywhere. It seems totally odd that anyone could think he disappeared! He has such a distinct look and voice that would be hard to confuse for anyone else as well, so I'm totally confused here. And while we're plugging Alan Rickman movies, I'd like to mention a little Canadian/UK picture that no one saw called Snow Cake that I saw at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival on a whim and it wound up being the best thing I saw there. I think Alan Rickman gave his best performance ever (that I've seen) in that movie. I find he does get somewhat typecast these days (dry, sarcastic type) and he gave such a real and powerful performance in Snow Cake that just blew me away! | | Static Link |

Agreed; A film professor of mine showed that to us in class a few years back. Another film not mentioned yet, though more of a minor role for Rickman, was Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Tom Tykwer). It's quite the dark and curious film; I recommend checking it out sometime. | | Static Link |

I think Abs nailed it right there. Who said Alan Rickman had to become a typecast villain? He's succeeded in that department, and now many others, making him pretty versatile, I'd say. | | Static Link |

The whole point of the thread was (I'm stunned how many people whos head this went over) to say, He did not become the essential Hollywood bad guy. So what did become of him? Matt, What would it add to the board if i simply went to IMDB? Nothing at all. Think about it. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Matt at January 8, 2008, 5:56 am | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | | To borrow a Tay line: This is a pretty dumb thread. Alan Rickman has been in a ton of movies. IMDB.com is your friend. He's much more than a villain. He's great in whatever he does. | | Static Link |

You could probably say the same for Dennis Hopper, although I think he has had a few more gems in the villain category than Rickman, but nevertheless. | | Static Link |

He's done so much since Die Hard, including a great role in Galaxy Quest. He's got great range and picks interesting projects, and he has far from disappeared from the business. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: redundo at January 7, 2008, 6:28 pm | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | | Well i was thinking that every, or near every, role that Sean Bean and Jean Reno are in a re ambiguous at best, if not outright villains. Jean Reno and Sean Bean both had such roles in Ronin. Jean Reno also had Mission Impossible, although i suppose he was the hero in Leon and Godzilla. Sean Bean has had The Hitcher, National treasure and I would include Boromir in LotR. He's also playing MacBeth in the one upcoming film that IMDB has any information on. I would like to see Alan Rickman take on some serious acting roles in films for a change though. He could definately do a good job as lead in a serious dramatic movie. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: zanarkand at January 7, 2008, 6:08 pm | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | | Oh my...... I sort of thought everybody knew this, but Dennis Hopper was the essential villian in Hollywood for quite a long time. So my whole point was...I thought Rickman was fully capable of doing the same thing. Hence, 'what became of' Sure he pops up from time to time, but not really in anything that fulfills his potential. Of course, not having seen Harry Potter stuff, perhaps he shines in that role. But, as Glen pointed out, He does not want to be typecast as a villian. (A shame if you ask me. A natural born villan that guy is.) I guess he prefers roles that give the viewer food for thought as well as entertaining them. | | Static Link |

I don't think you could even count Boromir as a villain role. As for Reno...I dunno. Of his movies that I've seen, only about half of his roles have been villains. But, then, most of his movies are French so I have no clue what kinds of roles he plays there. Any modern French theater enthusiasts? | | Static Link |

You could say this has happened to both Sean Bean and Jean Reno, i'd hate it to happen to an actor of Alan Rickmans quality. He has a pile of work out there, but it does tend to be smaller more quirky and interesting roles. And H2G2 was awesome. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: GodNnelg at January 7, 2008, 5:52 pm | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | | Alan Rickman doesn't want to be typecast as a villain though.. He seems to prefer playing moral ambiguity type characters, like Snape. My favorite part is him protraying that Leonard Nimoy type character in Galaxy Quest. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Josh at January 7, 2008, 5:48 pm | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | He was also great in Quigley Down Under... where he played the bad guy. And aside from bad guys, I mean the guy's filmography both past and present is loaded with GREAT, high profile roles. Love Actually
Dogma (the Metatron!)
Galaxy Quest (Alexander) What ever happened to Alan Rickman? He became one of the best, most used actors in Hollywood. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Deus Ex Machina at January 7, 2008, 5:42 pm | | Topic: What became of Alan Rickman? Forum: Film Hobbit | | Very strange... And he's being compared to Dennis Hopper? The last good villain Hopper played was Victor Drazen on "24". And before that what, the guy from Speed? Rickman hasn't had that many either, but they're better, higher profile roles: Snape and the judge from Sweeney Todd. | | Static Link |
