I enjoyed the Burton films at the time, but they haven't aged well with me - especially after the masterpiece that is Begins. Schumacher should be shot for his films. I haven't seen any of the animated versions.

Being a HUGE Batman fan I can say that I loved Batman:The Animated Series. I still love it and own the DVD's. That show was as light hearted as you could get while still staying true to the character. I was not as happy with the reimagining of the series towards the end but still found Batman's character to be even more in character. Favorite episode was, I believe, Holiday Knights (if I remember right). Batman meets up with Gordon at the end of the year and you see that they do it every year to reflect on how things happen. Great episode. And the best character study of any Batman character was Mr. Freeze. He was, by far, my favorite character of the series. I absolutely love Batman: Subzero. That is a great flick for that series. I would love to see that version of Freeze in Nolan's movies using Patrick Stewart.

So, I've got to ask, what's everyone's opinion of the animated Batman varieties? Compared to the comics, Burton, Schumacher, Nolan? (Maybe this Batman stuff goes in another thread, I dunno...seems on topic though)

He's not really the character, he Jaaacckk in a different costume. I was OK with the first Batman movie and how Keaton played to role, I could care less about Jack's Joker. The second movie was just dumb. The third was again, OK and entertaining, and the fourth was a waste of everyone's time. (Wow, anyone else getting a Star Trek vibe?) Batman Begins was just pure bliss as far as a movie goes. Certainly the best Batman movie released to date. Dark Knight could give it a run for it's money; and how often can you say THAT about a sequel?

Batman Forever's a guilty pleasure of mine...but because I like watching Carrey and Lee Jones chew up the scenery. Not really for the movie. #4 didn't even have amusing villians going for it. I can be very forgiving if a movie simply entertains me on even a low wavelength...

Yeah Burton's Batman was pure fantasy world, Shu--not sure he even knew what he was going for and Nolan has done it best so far. Big reason why I didn't enjoy the Spiderman series that much. Too over the top and childish for me. Might sound like a crazy thing to say since we're talking about superhero movies but I like where Nolan is taking the Batman franchise. It's very serious and disturbing.

Not that Nolan is planning on it...but if he ever put the Penguin in a sequel....the makeup would have to be a subtle look (or a slight penguin look).
The whole Batman Returns Penguin was just waaaay too much; it came off very cartoonish and even repulsive if I dare do say so.

Three words, Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I think I remember reading an interview where Goyer said the penguin was basically going to be an arms dealer who dressed ****ing natty. PS. Am I the only one who thinks that Ledger's going for a bit of the old school Oldman,

Chris Nolan's a genius. I'm glad he'd skip the Penguin and Robin. If he decided to do the Penguin, I wonder how he'd "make it real".

Jack Nicholson is an amazing character and did a great job as the Joker. However, Ledger is THE Joker as defined by the comic books.

As to the quality of Heath Ledger's Joker.. this Joker has literally been the entire focus of everything released to the public from The Dark Knight and none of the other major actors and director himself have spoken any ill qualms about it. Chris Nolan has Robin up there with Penguin as something he will never consider doing. He thinks they're both too silly for his "real-world" Batman.

That would be cool if they keep Joker more in line with the comic. I think they should eventually bring in Robin and then have the Joker kill him as it was written & drawn way back in the day.

Michael Caine is a legend. Caine on Ledger playing a character previously inhabited by Jack Nicholson; Quote: Now we had Jack Nicholson, who is one of the greatest Jokers and one of the greatest characters in this kind of movie. I have worked with Jack and I know him really well. You do not really want to follow Jack into anything. Unless it's a nightclub.
