Forum: Film Hobbit | | I thought the movie was ok until the very end when I realized that the whole movie took place ON MY BIRTHDAY! lol. It made it a little better. On a more serious note, I enjoyed it. I liked the ending too. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: redundo at February 1, 2008, 8:27 pm | | Topic: Cloverfield-Post When You See It! Forum: Film Hobbit | | Went to see the Late show on opening night over here. I'm glad i made the effort to see it because i liked the fact that it was different, but for a supposedly realistic movie they put in far too many unrealistic elements. The characters didn't annoy me as much as others have been saying, they were pretty shallowly sketched out, i guess Marlene was my favourite. And surprisingly the shaky-cam really didn't bother me that much at all. Spoilers; although if you've made it this far in the thread are you really going to stop now? Rob made some of the worst decisions possible to imagine and all the others skipped along after him. Beth was running down the street minutes after having a steel bar pulled out of her chest. Marlene died in a very Alien-like way and the monster survived direct hits from a string of 500kg bombs. I think the film should have ended with the helicopter crashing into Central Park. It seemed to go through a few too many plot twists by that stage. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Radagast at January 31, 2008, 7:04 pm | | Topic: Cloverfield-Post When You See It! Forum: Film Hobbit | | Exactly what I was wondering. I was thinking when they were in the chopper: "hey, what happened to Lilly?" I must admit, when Rob finds his girlfriend in her apartment, and they had that tender moment thang, I got the air violin out. Maybe that was a bit jaded and cynical of me, but it just seemed out of place in the movie. | | Static Link |

Yeah I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be her helicopter that crashed right before the second one takes off. | | Static Link |

Forum: Film Hobbit | | Part way through the movie I realized that much of it is filmed with the camera tilted slightly, and I was tilting my head to compensate. The deliberate chopping off the tops of people heads, as amateur home movie makers tend to do, got a bit annoying after a while. I wanted to give advice to the camera guy. "Just zoom out a bit and tilt the camera up a bit." But apart from that I liked the idea of not knowing the entire story, even if I was left wanting more resolution at the end. | | Static Link |

Some of the best special effects I've seen, for the monsters. But a lot of people seem to think the party scene was a bit long winded. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: masterthes at January 30, 2008, 5:06 pm | | Topic: Cloverfield-Post When You See It! Forum: Film Hobbit | | This was a really fun movie. It's like Blair Witch except you actually see something. I think my favorite scene was when they were all in the tunnel. A lot of the stuff were predictable, but it was still fun to see what happened SPOILERS So, do you guys think Lilly survived? END SPOILER | | Static Link |

Haha. Well, the movie's obviously targeted at 18 - 26 year olds and the funny thing is that people of that age generally like to look at and identify with young, attractive people. For instance, say I'm a 16-year-old girl, I'm probably gonna choose to watch Friends as opposed to say... Maude. | | Static Link |

You just have to see it to understand why. It feels like a Universal Studios ride a lot of the time, which if you think about it, is actually a rather impressive thing to pull off. But yeah, Cloverfield was a lot better than I was expecting. I never saw the full trailer before I saw the movie, but looking at it afterwards I see that they really don't show much at all in it. None of the real juicy parts. And the stuff they do show doesn't really work at all out of context. So I say to anyone not impressed with the trailer to go and see it anyway, and you will be pleasantly surprised. And I'm honestly a little surprise... | | Read Entire Entry |

| Posted by: Radagast at January 28, 2008, 4:29 pm | | Topic: Cloverfield-Post When You See It! Forum: Film Hobbit | | Saw this yesterday and we all really enjoyed it...at least, those of us who didn't bail part way through! The monster was quite awesome, and the rat-spider things...basically the special effects were the best thing I'd seen since "Beowulf". My favourite part was near the start when the attack first starts, it was very suspenseful and built the thrill factor quite nicely. My friend Waz left at about the creepiest part - when the spider things attacked in the subway tunnel. I thought he was going for a leak, but he never came back....later he said he had motion sickness from watching the hand held camera. I really liked "Blair Witch" also, so this was like that, but on a high budget with decent special effects. The inconclusive ending was good, leaves a bit to the imagination. | | Static Link |

First of all, I can't stand it when films now, especially more in the horror genre have pretty people as the leads. Where are all of the non 18 - 26 yr. old people when this shit hits the fan. My second issue with the movie is that it's a romance film, marketed as a monster movie. Don't get me wrong, the monster stuff is great, loved every minute of that. But this movie is mainly romance driven. And that just drives me up the wall. They spend time building up this whole romantic plot, and ends with a romantic plot, with a heavy drive of romance in between. Oh, and there's also a monster running around. But hell, we need to know about this relationship between these two people, don't we?! NO, WE DON'T! The monster is the most interesting part, dammit! Plus, the first act of introducing everyone and their situation is completely needless. Blair Witch did it perfectly in comparison. We don't really need to know who... | | Read Entire Entry |
| Posted by: phenotype31 at January 26, 2008, 1:12 am | | Topic: Cloverfield-Post When You See It! Forum: Film Hobbit | | I thought it was fantastic. And the main reason for that is they stuck with the concept from opening to end. If you're going to do something like this, that's the way to approach it. Anyways, great flick. I thought the little dudes looked a bit like Ant Lions from Half-Life. Paint them yellow and they'd be damn close. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: The Lying Woman at January 25, 2008, 10:55 am | | Topic: Cloverfield-Post When You See It! Forum: Film Hobbit | | Spoilers I really liked it. I thought it did a really good job of achieving exactly what it was supposed to be: home-video footage of a freakish, terrifying event. Because of that, I would have been really disappointed if they explained much more than they did because it would have made it a lot less real. The characters in the movie didn't have a clue what was going on, so the audience shouldn't either. And I loved that the ending just left everything unanswered for the same reason. (The flip-side of this is that I wouldn't want them to make a sequal . . . although, if they made one, I'd have to see it because knowing it was out there would kill me). I am hardly critical when it comes to CGI, and that sort of thing. I usually just take it for what it is, and don't worry about it not being too realistic. That said, my boyfriend thought the hand-held camera work did a lot for masking the fakeness of the CGI effects. (He tends to be quite critical of that sort of thing). All in all, I thought it was exactly ... | | Read Entire Entry |

Forum: Film Hobbit | | saw it opening night SPOILERS: I liked it for its entertainment value, but the fact that they didn't explain ANYTHING about it kinda pissed me off. I mean, I dont want to have to research online to be able to understand whats going on in a movie. Now I heard they are already talking about a sequel that is suppose to explain everything, and if they go that route that would be awesome because then you could use the arguement that part one was just to show off the monster and show the hysteria, and part two is there to explain everything. But if for some reason part 2 doesn't happen I will be very, very dissapointed. I would give it a 6/10 | | Static Link |

| Posted by: Bordick at January 19, 2008, 5:45 am | | Topic: Cloverfield-Post When You See It! Forum: Film Hobbit | | I call on their production design. That was NOT Spring Street. The Subway station or the street itself. They say they were in lower Manhattan in the beginning, but F-U that was Brooklyn. But other than my topigraphical NY logic, it was ok. I wasn't expecting much, so I wasn't really let down. Better than Blair Witch. I tried watching that about a month ago and that bitch drags like a bastard. Doesn't hold up at all. I applaud their attempt . You don't see much actual creative and experimental commercial shit anymore. | | Static Link |

Wasn't that bad but there wasn't a single point where I was actually connecting with the movie at all. I didn't get spooked, the characters made me want to smack them, and too much of the thing was just damn silly. It's odd. There are so many things that sucked about the movie, yet I didn't walk out thinking it was bad. I can't think of anything really good about it though. | | Static Link |
