Nothing out of Japan could make me cry... accept maybe tears of terror and disgust.

Okay. If you want make an argument for anime, I suggest starting with Grave Of The Fireflies. I'd next suggest the TV series Ghost In The Shell, both season one "Stand Alone Complex" and season two "SAC 2nd Gig". Both are essentially police-procedural shows set in a slightly futuristic environment. Very grownup stuff without most of anime's cliches and trappings.

I wonder if they even looked at Asian or Asian American actors first though. Kinda takes the wind out of it despite how ever good Levitt is as an actor. The idea just reeks of '50s westerns to me, when white guys played Indians.

DAMN, Gordon-Levitt as Tetsuo. F*** yeah! He's got the qualities for the tragic crazy character alright.

I've gotta say I think he's perfect for the roll. He's got that whole Runt of the litter thing going.

I think people like SA because it's their first venture into anime and it's totally different, and they get caught up in the visuals (which are frankly among Miyazaki's best). Personally, his best films are Nausicca, Castle in the Sky, and Mononoke Hime. Fafhrd

I enjoyed the comic enough and I thought the animation translated well enough from it to be a bearable experience. Oh boy but that soundtrack hehe. Sounded like Rosann Barr's asian cousin sang in it.

There is a lot of bad anime, but like Faf said you've got to find the good as for for making Akira live action some things should be left alone, but we know hollywood only see's green.

Akira is weird enough in anime form, the budget required and rewrites needed to turn it in to a coherent western movie mean this is bound to fail.

I'm sure it's wonderful, but I'm not watching it out of spite. It's my way of paying back anime fans for creating a world in which card battle cartoons exist.

This is one more notch on Hollywood's lack of originality. The original anime is a classic; it doesn't need a crappy live action remake. Oh and btw Josh for hating anime! Fafhrd
