I can actually appreciate the homage. I hated the originals, but I can still find that creative and enjoy familiarity. Not as much as I would if I liked the originals, though, of course.

Superman Returns is an honest to God sequel to the second movie, however, a lot of concessions are made to the fact that this sequel is being made an actual 24 years later, but in the movie's terms it is only set 5 or 6 years later. I love that WK likes a movie that is in essence, in the first two thirds, a massive homage to the original which he hates.

For me, it was a bit of a reboot. Just because the title had "returns" in it, didn't signify a sequel of any sort, to me. I saw it as the equivalent of Batman Begins, as a reboot of a franchise...maybe I've got the wrong thought pattern on this or something, though.

You're right, it was. MUCH MUCH MUCH better. What's your point? This wasn't a reboot of a franchise, though.

Bad WK. Go ahead, side with Josh on this. Batman Begins was a MUCH better reboot of a superhero franchise.

I finally got around to seeing this tonight. My absolute unrivaled hatred of the first two movies is well documented, but I liked this. I loved it most of the way and felt like I was watching one of my favorite movies that has ever been (amazing considering I don't really like Superman and, again, hate his movies), but the third act sort've lost me a bit. Sort've overly drawn out and just not really that interesting. Up until then, though, the acting, story, visuals and emotions are absolutely incredible. Also, I've joined EDJ in trashing Hackman's Luthor many a time, but I disagree with him here: I really liked Spacey. Anyway, that's all. I didn't love the entire product, but I loved large parts of it and liked it as a whole. Pleasently surprised.

I didn't mind the Christianity references really, but I thought they used the word "savior" a few too many times. "Hero" or "Superhero" seemed more fitting.

By average movie standards Superman Returns has done pretty well, grossing around $190 million domestically and $150 million internationally. However, given its large budget, massive marketing campaign and the amount of time it took the movie to earn what it has, there's debate over whether or not it actually turned much of a profit. The word out there seems to be that if the movie can make $200 million domestic, there will be a second. Is $195 million close enough? That's up to the execs. Whether Singer does or doesn't get to direct a second movie, you can bet the budget won't be as elaborate as this time around.

Does anyone know what the box office for Superman Returns has been like over the last few weeks? I liked the movie a lot, but am getting the impression it has struggled a bit, which is a shame. My young son also liked it very much, though I think he preferred Superman II because of Zod - so I'm hoping it may be true that Singer will bring back Zod next time (assuming there is a next time.) PS I noticed all the Christian stuff, but wasn't too bothered.

Did you know that Passion of the Christ is an allegory for Aztec Sun Worship? They practiced human sacrifice after all, and note the way the sun goes down in the film as Jesus dies. I just don't get why this is such a big deal. People act like the influence of Christianity is some sort of proof of their faith... or conversely some affront to it. The reactions seem to run the gamit. I don't see why anyone has any reaction at all.... maybe some people have never read books or seen movies before. That is my only explanation. What do you expect after centuries of oppression... sorry rephrase... creative faith building.... by the Christian Church? Of course their teachings are going to work their way into every part of everyone's life.

NEWSFLASH: Modern pop culture has been influenced by Christianity and other religius mythology!! Whoa. I guess that's what happens after centuries of Christian church influence. It wasn't so long ago that people weren't allowed to read anything that WASN'T Jesus based. Whoopdeedooo. Did you know you can draw a direct parallel between Star Wars and Jesus too? Also Star Wars and Greek Mythology. Also Star Wars and Pagan sun god worship. Pick a movie. Play find the Allegory. It's a blast.

I rated it no better than alright, and not a patch on the Spiderman movies or Batman Begins. I'm surprised people haven't picked up on the Christian theme more - from when he landed on the island it was basically an allegory for the crucifiction story. Anyway, similarities that I picked up on: The demigod sent by his father to bring light to mankind and be the saviour. Raised by human parents. The retreat into the wilderness (or outer space). Beaten by the guards. Stabbed in the side. Carries the problems of the world. Dies and falls back to earth in a crucifix position. Rises again. Empty bed is discovered = empty tomb.

This was one of the dullest movies I've ever seen. Dull superhero, dull alter-ego, dull villain, dull plot, dull non-love story. None of the characters were fleshed out at all. Clark Kent was just a pair of glasses, Superman was the last survivor of Krypton (which his father had already told him), Lex Luthor was......nothing at all. Superman just wasn't super. He barely stopped a plane crash, and he stopped a bank robber that had a gun that cost him more money than he could ever steal from that bank. Singer wanted to strike gold again like he did with Hugh Jackman. It didn't work. Brandon Routh is not a movie star. In a couple years time he'll probably be on some CBS crime drama.

I see there are reports around about the sequel, with Singer saying it will be out in 2009 - and will be his 'Wrath of Khan'. Three years seems quite a long time to wait - but we'll have Spidey in the meantime.

I enjoyed it. Routh was a good Superman/fitting Clark Kent. I'm wondering what the old lady meant when she was on her dying bed, thanking Lex Luther for showing her pleasures that she never knew of ..? Thinking about that gives me the chills.

They actually did move it from a Friday premiere to the Wendsday before, probably in anticipation of Pirates. But they did that probably a month or two (?) beforehand. I suspect moving it much more might have started some negative press (you know how such things can be interpreted in LaLaland) and it might have hurt more than helped. If they were going to move it, they would have had to move it many months ago.

True. I'm hearing rumblings that the two sequels that have been planned (one for 2009) may not be made now because of the underperformance of this movie. With a smaller budget, this movie would be a wild sucess. But with how much it took to make it, I don't think they're getting the expected bang for their buck.

I've also read there is a 50-50 split most times, but I read that on blockbusters (like Superman Returns) the studio negotiates with the theaters and gets 80%-90%, the first week or two, and then it drifts down to an equal split. I can't imagine that this movie will not be profitable. In addition to US and oversees box office (and a lot of movies oversees are sold as a right to distribute, rather than a portion of box office take, sometimes they are pre-sold and used to finance the movie, but that's typically with smaller movies), there is DVD, pay-per-view, television, and all that Superman merchandise. Plus the additional interest in the original movies which results in a few extra bucks for the studio. The movie isn't a bomb by any stretch, but the key will be if they make another one. We can be pretty sure they made a few dollars if that is the case.
