Vary On Oct. 18, Fox announced that the highly anticipated X-Men spin-off starring Hugh Jackman as feral mutant Wolverine has an official release date (May 1, 2009) and title: X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?
Sure, we knew the film was coming, but the moniker is a letdown — it sounds more like a cartoon than the latest entry in the macho, lucrative X-Men enterprise — as is the prequel strategy. It's a tack that ignores the lesser-known mutants who could continue building the X-Men brand.
As such, this latest film, set to be directed this January by Gavin Hood (Rendition) from a script by David Benioff (Troy), jumps to Wolverine's past (you'll see the supposedly ageless hero's troubled childhoo... | | Read Entire Entry |

Renegotiations would be needed to secure the main stars of the previous three films. Donner says "The newer cast members are signed, and the older cast members are not." Considering the older names involved -- Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Romijn, Famke Janssen and Anna Paquin -- that could run into a huge chunk of money. All that's putting the cart before the wolverine, of course, since Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his role as the manicure-challenged mutant superhero in his own film. "Next, we're going to do 'Wolverine,' but not before the end of the year because he's in the Baz Luhrmann film," she says of the filmmaker's untitled Australian epic with Nicole Kidman. However, "We have the script and are working on it." Shuler Donner reports, "We also have 'Young Magneto' in development." | | Static Link |

Each X-Men film was more expensive than the last, with larger salaries and more spectacular visual effects, so an X-Men 4 is unlikely to be produced soon. Twentieth Century Fox chose the "divide and conquer" route for the franchise with multiple spin-offs, including prequels focusing on Wolverine and Magneto, a film about the students at the X-Mansion to be written by Zak Penn, and director David O. Russell expressed interest in a film about Emma Frost. Penn said of his spin-off, "The original idea was to have me do a young X-Men spin-off. But someone came up with a pretty interesting idea which I can’t discuss... He came up with how to do a young X-Men movie, which is not what you’d expect... If you agree to do one of the X-Men movies, it could end up happening four or five years down the line, which is fine with me. It’s just not my focus right now." | | Static Link |
