A brilliant film across the board and in every way. I worked at a movie theatre when it came out and I watched a countless number of times all the way through and watched it on every break I had. | | Static Link |

The opening scene that puts the "Cop" as the bad guy and the "Robber" as the good guy gives the movie, since the beginning, a non-traditional taste that reminds all the way thuw. No doubt a good movie. My calification 9/10. | | Static Link |

Great acting, great script, great directing, great story. This is truly a great movie. Best line in the movie: "I'm talking to an empty telephone." | | Static Link |

Michael Mann(the director) is like a Mozart of film. This guy alway crafts interesting films. Robert DeNiro gives a superb performance(big suprise) and really steals the show. Ashley Judd is great and this is the only film of her's I like. Al Pacino is always great and in this he gives his second best performance after "The Insider"(another Mann film). Natalie Portman is great and this performance probably got her "Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace" and "Anywhere But Here". Val Kilmer is great too and I believe this is his best performance. The action was suspence filled. This film annually visits my DVD player and I always enjoy it. Good choice for movie of the week! | | Static Link |

The DENIRO AND PACINO scene MUST go down arguably as one of the Best Ever in Movie History. The Heist scene is also arguably One of the Best Robbery Scenes in Movie History. This Movie is an Absolute Masterpiece.

| Posted by: max at July 18, 2001, 11:07 am | | Topic: HEAT (July 16 - July 22) Forum: JoBlo | | Michael Mann's HEAT is a muscular piece of work, impressive as smart mainstream entertainment, as lushly designed art film and as one of the most convincing depictions of the bond between hunter and prey that I can recall. The obsessed cop who can't save his marriage. The obsessed criminal who wants to go straight. The women who try to love them. These are fairly hackneyed themes but Mann keeps the focus elsewhere: on the nuts-and-bolts process of preparing and executing a job, on the edgy relationships between the robbers and the cops and the fences. One of HEAT's greatest strengths is in the details (De Niro's other heist film, THE SCORE, boasts the same strength). Nothing enters Mann's frame that is not designed to be there. At the center of the film is a breathtaking scene where Pacino and De Niro eye each other across a diner booth. Cop and thief. They are enemies but they also need each other. It is important that they talk before they blow each other away. Theirs is the central conflict in HEAT, and i... | | Read Entire Entry |

What sets this film apart from your run of the mill action flick is the depth of character both leads put into their respective roles, and a strong support from Tom Sizemore and Val Kilmer amongst others. The tension is built up throughout the film as Pacino gets closer to Di-Niro and his crew, and because director Michael Mann puts character before action, the films almost 3 hour run time is riveting throughout. Violent and relentless, this film demands your full attention.10/10 | | Static Link |

| Posted by: Andrew at July 16, 2001, 3:48 pm | | Topic: HEAT (July 16 - July 22) Forum: JoBlo | | Top notch directing by Michael Mann, beautiful cinematography by the great Dante Spinotti, a moody score by Elliot Goldenthal and solid performances make "Heat" one of the best crime films ever made. I bought "Heat" on DVD without seeing it beforehand and was blown away. It truly has one of the best robbery sequences in cinematic history. 10/10 | | Static Link |
| Posted by: bmain77 at July 16, 2001, 12:52 pm | | Topic: HEAT (July 16 - July 22) Forum: JoBlo | | I agree with the last two posts. Heat is quite simply a classic. I'd venture to call it the best crime movie out there. It had the perfect balance of intelligent writing packaged with some of the greatest action scenes ever filmed. I can't imagine anyone filming a better shootout than the big one in the street. It still gives me goosebumps just thinking about. This scene and the meeting at the coffee shop between Deniro and Pacino nearly caused myself the cream my jeans in theater. There was not a single bad performance in the whole movie. Even the smallest roles were very well acted. People like Ashley Judd, William Fichtner, Henry Rollins, Hank Azaria, Tom Sizemore, John Voight, Natalie Portman, and yes even Tone Loc did great jobs with their relatively small parts. Hell the supporting players alone make up a great cast let alone throwing in the two acting gods and Val Kilmer. I honestly think Kilmer might have given the his best performance of them all in Heat (well ok except for maybe The Doors). I just ... | | Read Entire Entry |

Scrolling down the list of replies, I realized that most of you all thought that it was overlong. No, I don't think so. The proper words you should use is "long but not overlong" because this movie would not be very good at all if it were shorter, and most of you thought it was really good which, I think your reviews would be bad if this film were any shorter. If you don't appreciate movies, you shouldn't be writing a reply on the movie! And don't tell me you don't get that "into" movies, well, refer to my previous sentence. Michael Mann wrote this movie and I was surprised. When first seeing it (finally) about a month ago, instantly it became a favorite. Writing a movie that is three hours long is tough, but being able to make the audience care about the characters, stay interested in the story to make an overall superb movie is a feat achieved not very often. The first positive thing about the movie is the scri... | | Read Entire Entry |

| Posted by: ClarkGriswald at July 15, 2001, 9:28 pm | | Topic: HEAT (July 16 - July 22) Forum: JoBlo | | Heat is by far one of the best movies of the 1990's. Yeah, it's a bit long (just under 3 hours long) and yes, the first time I watched it I dozed off twice, but as I watched it again and again when I had the time I came to appreciate it for its take on cops versus robbers. The coffee scene with DeNiro and Pacino is one of the best mano e mano scenes seen in some time. 9/10 for me. . . though I wasn't fond of Val Kilmer. Could have gotten a better actor. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: bskutle at July 15, 2001, 9:05 pm | | Topic: HEAT (July 16 - July 22) Forum: JoBlo | | An overall exceptional crime epic; fascinating (if a bit overlong), with spectacular acting by DeNiro, Pacino, et al. Michael Mann is a true contemporary master, and the score by Elliot Goldenthal is masterful. What more can I say? Grade- A or 9/10 | | Static Link |

| Posted by: The Heart Collector at July 15, 2001, 8:39 pm | | Topic: HEAT (July 16 - July 22) Forum: JoBlo | | This is a great, if a tad overlong movie. The acting is excellent, with plenty of recognizable faces in supporting parts. You actually care about what's gonna happen to these people. And even Val Kilmer was likeably here. That's got to mean something. 8/10 | | Static Link |

It stands out from other "cops and robbers" flix because of the way it depicted the personalities between the cops and robbers. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino both were great in showing the similarities and differences between their own lifestyles...and the conflicts that their many similarities brought. 8/10. | | Static Link |

This week's movie is: HEAT "A successful career criminal considers getting out of the business after one last score, while an obsessive cop desperately tries to put him behind bars in this intelligent thriller written and directed by Michael Mann. Neil McCauley is a thief who specializes in big, risky jobs, such as banks and armored cars. He's very good at what he does; he's bright, methodical, and has honed his skills as a thief at the expense of his personal life, vowing never to get involved in a relationship from which he couldn't walk away in 30 seconds. Vincent Hanna is an L.A.P.D. detective determined to catch McCauley, but while McCauley's personal code has forced him to do without a wife and children, Hanna's dedication has made a wreck of the home he's tried to have; he's been divorced twice, he's all but a stranger to his third wife, and he has no idea how to reach out to his troubled ... | | Read Entire Entry |
