This is going to seem really obscure, but I've just discovered that in 1982, emphisis on the 82 a song was played in the frost ampitheatre, called sweet magnolia, this event is publicised on the web site www.FROGnet.net. Though it probably is, a matter of chance

Alrightie folks, that's another week and another movie that we've discussed the hell out of! As you may or may not know, this week's film is Terry Gilliam's sci-fi adventure 12 MONKEYS starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. Hope you enjoy it...

stefan: a.) I REALLY love commentaries. Probably the best part of DVD's if they're good. And as on the Boogie Nights DVD, Anderson can make a damn good one! b.) I know, that was a bad comparison. But what I was trying to get across was that Speilberg is not as "great" a director as Anderson. And people, the majority of the world, seem to flock to Speilberg rather then Anderson. This was mainly pointed towards the fact taht Speilberg is mainly a blockbuster guy (and he is the best at that, I'll admit) with a few exceptions, while Anderson is able to make Great films that usually attract audiences too (save magnolia). But yea, that was a pretty bad comparision. My apologies.

</font> DaN.... two answer both of those... The DVD had an entire supplemental material DVD that traced the entire making of the movie right from day one. What the hell more do you want? A 3 hour commentary that maybe one percent of the viewers would actually sit and listen to the whole thing. BAH! the commentary track is usually the biggest waste of time on any DVD. Do NOT try to compare PTA to Spielberg. Geeze man!! Comeon! Spielberg does his "Schindler's List" and "The Color Purple" movies, but for the most part he's made his name in popcorn flicks... Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, Jurrasic Park I,II,III. To compare them is like trying to compare Stephen King to a comic book writer.

Funny, I always considered Smith to be the a flip side of the same coin that PTA is on. I can't see how putting a Clerks cartoon on ABC is any less pretentious than an over-the-top movie.

I dig what you're saying, Irene, and damn, if you didn't go all the way with that one, eh?!? Good shite. I too love "movie geekie" things like that. I started spotting all the 8s and 2s the second time that I watched the movie and it was just a cool thing to watch for. Remember the scene of the game show, where there's actually some dude in the crowd holding a John 8:2 sign or something? Pretty cool. And if you listen to any of P.T.'s commentary tracks, you'll quickly come to notice that he's a BIGGER movie geek than any of us, so I'm sure it was all intentional, as in-jokes and such (like Tarantino tossing that ORANGE balloon into one of his scenes in RESERVOIR DOGS). Oh and by the way, I'm also in love with this movie's style, soundtrack, acting, specific scenes (the one with Reilly in the black lady's apartment is to die for!), magic, directing and ending. But I also see how it's DEFINITELY not for everyone. Didn't writer/director Kevin Smith (CLERKS, CHASING AMY, DOGMA, etc...) say that he thou...

I think Anderson is one of the greatest directors of all time. So much better then the renowned Speilberg. Anderson is one of the most original directors of cinema. His personality, screenplays, CHARACTERS, films, and so on. Too bad there isn't a fucking commentary on the damn DVD! I still don't really dig the singing scene.and I also question how it is comic. It is VERY daring. I still am a bit confused about it. And there are so many questions about this film that can arise: Why were they all singing? Why did she smile at the end? Why do people think this movie is too long becuase I honestly lost track of time and the film seemed really short for some reason but then again I tend to like long movies more? [nice question huh] Heres something else. Claudia Wilson Gator. The actress. Her performance seemed a very very very little overdone. Another one of the COUNTLESS topics that can arise from a Paul Thomas Anderson film. [This message has been edited by DaN (edited 05-31-2001).]

Brock, great comments about Anderson and film-making in general. To be honest, I don't think we disagree on much. The part we definitely disagree on is what the director should care about. Film-making is an art form, but it is also intrinsically (I suck at spelling) a business and MUST lend itself to commercial acceptance. The artistic and commercial needs often form a tension that the director (and writers, producers, etc.) must balance. There is always leeway for those in charge to cater more towards commerciallism or artistic expression, but the tension is always present. What I mean to say is that a director can ignore the audience and only focus on his creativity, but in my opinion, this disturbs the equalibrium of film-making. A balance must be acheived. -Remember that in my original assertion, I said that film-making is a combination of artistic expression AND commercialism. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that every good movie HAS to be a commercial success, after all, who can predict what will sel...

Here is one of the reasons I liked the movie so much: My wife noticed the 82 written with the wire as the boy was commiting suicide. Then we began to notice 82s all over the place. Next I began noticing Mason references and symbols layered throughout the movie. I did an internet search at Dogpile, using the query "82 Magnolia". What did I get? A link to the 82nd Mason lodge. Where is it located? MAGNOLIA, Arkansas. I quickly notified the IMDB and all of my friends. Now, I don't know if PT intended these kinds of things to happen. But: It cannot mearly be a matter of coincidence. These sort of things happen all of the time. What a movie!

I keep a mental list of my favorite top 10 films of all time. And damned if "Magnolia" isn't number one. I gotta tell ya, the first time I saw it I hated it. The frogs? The girl smiling? What was all that about? And yet as I went on with my days, certain scenes and images haunted me. So I thought I would see it again. I can't really explain why it affected me so much. I guess there is a time in everyone's life when you feel exactly like each of the characters. How many here have never felt the effects of love like Quiz Kid Donnie Smith? Or the frustrated wrath of Linda Partridge? Like an article in Rolling Stone put it "Magnolia is a movie for those who lay on their bedroom floor crying praying that the love of their life will walk in the door and save them." Okay, that was a tad bit melodramatic. But isn't "Magnolia"? Oh, and can I just give kudos to the brilliant Jon Brion score? It never leaves my CD player, and is tied with the "Requiem For A Dream' soundtrack as my fav...

Melora Walters. My other problem with this film is that it just doesn't make much sense when you watch it. Not that that's a bad thing sometimes. Many films(like Fight Club for instance) need a few viewings for it to sink in. I've seen this movie 3 times, each time it just gets worse and worse, and it makes no more sense than it did the time before. I guess overall, PTA is kinda crappy in my opinion and has just too many ideas for his own good. He needs to learn a little thing called editing.

Here's my point freesafetyblitz... No, absolutely not, an audience should not have to keep all of that in mind. In fact, I don't think P.T. Anderson gives a flying fuck about the audience. I think he made a film that made him happy, and the studio backed him up. I mean, why should P.T. Anderson have to conform to what audiences desire? People will still go to watch his flicks no matter what he does... why, you ask? Because people like his style. I mean, I think the only concession Anderson ever made to the studio's with "Magnolia", was to include Tom Cruise. I mean, just look at "Eyes Wide Shut", directed by another cinematic auteur who decided to make a film that was not for everyone, and you know what? What tha' fuck... let's throw Tom Cruise in it to make some dough. Then there is "Snatch", I mean, would it have been as much of a success in America if Brad Pitt hadn't been given a small role? On and on... people can make whatever films they wanna make and don't have to care i...

Dan, I thought the Aimee Mann moment was one of the most daring/comic/moving moments in recent cinema. I admire Paul Thomas Anderson because he is not afraid to puush the boundaries of film. To sudenly have the entire cast burst into song? a shower of frogs? brilliant Anderson's greatest quality is surely his lack of timidity and willingness to experiment

In a great year of films, Magnolia was one of the best (#8 on my top 10 list). When I first saw this movie at the theatres, it really stood out in my mind. I loved both the beginning and the ending of the movie, but I thought the movie was a little too long in the middle as I watched the lives of these people. However I was blown away by Tom Cruise's performance (his best since Born on the Fourth of July) and Julianne Moore was excellent too. This is a great dramatic story interwoven with coicidence and chance. Paul Thomas Anderson is well on his way to a terrific movie-making career after this follow up to his acclaimed 1997 hit Boogie Nights. P.S.-I still think Tom Cruise deserved to win best-supporting actor instead of Michael Caine

If you want a natural explanation for the scene, consider this: The song was playing on the radio in the background and they all considered it as one of their favourite songs. So they sing along with it. I do that all the time, there is nothing strange about it. They were simply all tuned on the same channel. [This message has been edited by Tuukka (edited 05-29-2001).]

This is, as nearly everyone here has stated, one of the greatest films to be released. However, not all people appreciate it. They think that it should move along and be exactly like "Boogie Nights". Well, this movie is so much different then BN for many reasons. One, its deeper then anything I've ever seen. It's meant to show personalities growing and losing. It's a brilliant piece of work that really shows how Anderson is, IMO, flawless in his character writings. Problems with the movie: Although I give this movie a 10/10, there is one scene that I don't like. And that's where they all sing "Wise Up". For some reason hearing all them sing along with Aimee Mann was kind of stupid. What did everyone else think of that scene?

I agree with what you're saying Brock and I totally support Anderson's attempt at making a personal, labor of love type film. He had a huge hit with BOOGIE NIGHTS and had the clout and respect to make the kind of movie he wanted, with little or not interference. That's the kind of filmmaker we need these days. One who goes from making BOOGIE to a highly personal and introspective film instead of a big-budget popcorn blockbuster piece of shit. But, sometimes you write things, draw things or film things that no one else would or should see. I don't blame him for not cutting the movie (why should he if no one is pressuring him??) to placate the movie-going public, but in the end, I feel (and this is just one man's opinion) that prevented the message from getting across. This is a good movie and possibly a great movie, but as a guy sitting in a theater watching this movie, I just didn't enjoy it.

Magnolia is one of the finest films I have ever seen. It's definitely at the top of my list with the Shawshank Redemption and Fight Club. I know that a lot of people didn't really get into it and that doesn't bother me one bit. This movie knocked me on my ass and left me there to ponder life for a while and that's all that I want in a film. Later on I began to analyze it and now there are even more layers to my respect for this film and the people who created it. But I think too many people try to force their opinions on others. If no one else on this planet liked this movie, it would not change my view one bit. It amazes me. For those of you who didn't like it, on it's own merits and not because you're reacting to film critics, so be it. Keep on doing what you're doing and having fun. For those of us who did love this movie, well what else is there to say?

I just want to add to anyone who doesn't like "Magnolia" that in order to understand the film, one must understand the director. P.T. Anderson is as unique and ambitious as Martin Scorcese ever was, to use a comparison from last week's film discussion "Taxi Driver". P.T Anderson is also a personality on his own, away from the actors and cameras, he is an intensely brilliant cinematic auteur. His ambition is so huge, that like so many great director's of the past (ex: Demille, Kubrick, Capra, Cassavette, Altman, Hawkes, etc...), when given complete freedom to create, not to mention final cut, he can get a little over the top. Not to say that "Magnolia" is not great, but I agree it could have been a little shorter in parts and still gotten the point across. The thing to remember is that P.T. Anderson is a showman who absolutely loves to watch actors perform, therefore if he could have had it completely his way, then the running time of "Magnolia" would have been spent ju...

Well allow me to be the first to take the "anti" stance and challenge the majority of postings. I did NOT like MAGNOLIA. Let me go on record as saying I LOVE PT Anderson as a director. BOOGIE NIGHTS is easily a top ten movie in my book and HARD EIGHT/SYDNEY is another fave. But somewhere along the line, PT lost me with this one. When I first watched it in the theaters, I didn't enjoy it at all. Upon the recommendation of many who loved it, I gave the film a second chance on DVD. I still didn't like it. There were some things I did like (i.e., the opening sequence, the performances of Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman and William H. Macy, the cinematography) but overall I felt the film was too jumbled and too long to accurately get the message across that it was trying to convey. My biggest problem with the movie is that the movie seems to be one big three hour climax with no resolution. I read that Anderson patterned the movie after the Beatles song "A Day in the Life." OK, that's cool, ...

I'm probably influenced by all of the "critical success" that this movie enjoyed, but I really hated this movie. Not passionately or anything, but it just sucked. I don't have a problem with it not having a neat and tidy ending, but there was no story to follow. In my humble opinion, this movie consisted of a bunch of mundane uninteresting characters which, contrary to advertisement, never truly intersected one another. I guess that's what I truly disliked: the false advertisement of the movie. The frogs were just cheap, I REALLY felt cheated when I saw that. Kudos to Tom Cruise though...until he cried!! 4/10 - rent only if desperate

This is one of the best films to come out of the 90s, and Paul Thomas Anderson did a fantastic job with it. Albeit, the movie is not perfect, but considering Anderson wasn't even 30 when he made it, I foresee great things in the future for him. The different story lines, or as it should be more aptly named, character lines, were all intriguing and believable. It could have been more interesting if they had been a little more interconnected, but subtlety was the aim here, and it does work. This movie is engaging if you let it be, in that it requires some thinking on the part of the viewer in order to fully appreciate its value. This is a character study, but not in a traditional sense. I do not want to give away too much if you have not seen the movie, so I will limit my comments to merely that Magnolia is a very emotionally driven film. The directing is superb, although I think Paul Thomas Anderson could have done a bit better job of condensing some of the voice-overs towards the end--not because they were b...

My thoughts on the title are just a simple: yeah, the street is Magnolia blvd. and the poster (like the one in this topic) shows the story of the film so well: Different characters and their lives are being tide up togheter in the end (the middle of the flower). Also, you can't help noticing that The names Rose and Lily appear in the movie (flowers), but that just maybe digging too deep.
But as for all the MAGONIA stuff PTA has talked about in the Script-book (btw, how many of you own the book? I do!! [img]/ubb/smile.gif[/img]) and on the website ptanderson.com, it all sounds very interesting but I wouldn't have come up with that without the confession of PTA himself.... I give Magnolia a 10/10. This movie was just absolutely beautiful. They way the characters showed their emotions, they just felt so real. The group singing of Wise Up (please, someone tell me who sings this song) was so touching and downright beautiful. I almost broke down in tears.
And when Frank T.J. Mackey was trying to keep himself together while talking to his dying father Earl, that has to be, in my point of view, one of the greatest moments in acting I have ever seen. I actually felt Frank's pain that had been built up inside him, and with most recent films, I haven't felt anything for anyone. I noticed a little 'subliminal message' during the film, which im sure lots of other viewers noticed also. When they pan the crowd at the 'What Do Kids Know' show, a guy sitting in an aisle seat holds up a sign that says "Exodus 8:2", and abruptly gets the sign taken away by a security guard. Now that I know what Exodus 8:2 says, I understand why he held up the sign.

Pretty much everyone echoes my feelings for the movie. I want to thank stefanb for the info about the bible quotation. That really does clear some questions about the last scene. I just think that it is too soon to discuss this film. There just hasn't been enough time to digest this whole film. There is so much more to discover. 20 years from now we will have some really kickass talks over coffee and cigarettes like we did with the Taxi Driver now. Finally, I have to say everyone who has access to a DVD player needs to check the sumplemental info on the second disc of the dvd set. The video diary of the production of the movie was almost as good as the film itself. You really see what kind of personality PT ANderson has. Funny how both movies 'Taxi Driver' and now 'Magnolia' are in my top ten movies of all time and are the movies discussed. If i were to say everything i think of Magnolia and what everything means i would be typing until tomorrow. So i'll just say the important stuff. Magnolia - a movie that strictly relies on its characters. This movie talks about a lot of things and has numerous themes and the one which you people failed to mention was the influence of t.v. These people are actually linked by the t.v. Earl Partridge is the producer of the show which Jimmy Gator is the host of. And these are the two central characters. Regret, forgiveness, the past, all these are themes. This movie is really like a mosaic. So many rich characters and how they all relate to each other which is show by the song Wise Up which they all mouth. I mean this movie is HUGE and it blew me away from the first time i saw it.
