I have watched numerous episodes of "Cracker", Tuukka, however I have never been able to find the other two. I actually thought that Stallone did a very nice job in the remake, and the whole cast from Mickey Rourke to Michael Caine and Alan Cumming ("Titus", "Eyes Wide Shut", "GoldenEye", "Plunkett & Macleane"... I just wanted to mention a few of Alan's films because he is such a great actor) each did fantastic jobs. British films are so verily unique... I love them so... ever since I saw Peter Medak's "The Krays". I don't know what it is, but British gangster flicks are like no other, and are so cold, and hard, and so... you know... you know... Does Stallone live in te re-make? Anyway, I love hard-boiled, realistic crime flicks and nobody does them as well as the brits do... BTW Brock, are you familiar with british TV series such as Cracker, GBH, Edge Of Darkness and so on... NOBODY does serious, moody, intelligent and dark crime series like the brits do... Fuck, I have to get those series on video, I wonder if they are available...

Have you had the chance to see other English films like "The Big Hit" or "The Long Good Friday", Tuukka? If you have, and you liked them, you will love this one Tuukka. It is the best of the British gangster genre, and certainly one of Caine's best flicks. It was the predecessor to films like "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels". And as a screenwriter yourself, the script is classic. Also, I bet you could find a copy of Ted Lewis' novel "Jack Returns" which is a decent read, or even the 2000 Sylvester Stallone remake, which while being similar to the story, is nowhere near as good as the original... and the ending sucks in the remake... I would REALLY like to see this flick, but it's not available here in Finland. I guess I have to buy a DVD player and start ordering imports. Anyway, it sounds like a kind of film which i would LOVE...

no I don't own it on dvd only video but I found a DVD review talking about the tranfer and it is an Anchor Bay product. The Ipcress File is presented in a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The image is strong, but age has been unkind to this print, which shows flecks, wear spots, and an overall soft looking visual presentation. This is by no fault of the transfer, but of time, which has worn this print down a lot. Still, this is the best the movie has looked on home video, so there's no need to skip it because of the visuals. There are some minor compression errors, but none serious enough to write home about. The colors, due to the print condition, appear a little muted, but not to a distracting level. For the same reason, the contrast is a little bright, which creates overly light shadows. Even with these flaws, I can't help but commend Anchor Bay for their work here, the movie has never looked better. hope this helps brock.

man, this movie sounds pretty damn sweet. Sure I checked out the spoilers, but this must be one bad ass film(Since I'm into Gangster/Triad films) Even tho Carter dies. It makes the film better (reminds me of John Woo's A Better Tomorrow and The Killer) But to me I need to check this film out.

I saw that disc the other day, but the case looked really cheesy... I have this thing about cheese... it looked kinda cheaply made. Do you have it? I wonder if it's a good print? Is it an Anchor Bay disc or who produced it? just curious... Gotta love Caine in those black-rimmed glasses... he gets all the chicks...

Please do, ak... I'm sure it would be an interesting read, to say the least, my friend. Deckard... to be honest, I've never seen "The Italian Job" because I can never find it, but I do watch "The Ipcress File" over and over again, whenever I get the chance to sit down and enjoy the video. My video is so old and worn. I hope they release these on DVD soon or something. I'm with you as well Deckard... the ending is so cool... it just like shocks you and stops the momentum and love we are feeling for the character of Jack. More films would do well to use this method, instead of grandizing every criminal into some sort of iconoclast or martyr. We REALLY shouldn't love him as the 'bad man", but every loves a Johnny Rotten, right? Ah... "The Limey"... perhaps a review is in order... I love dat flick da most... although my favorite Terence Stamp film will always be Stephen Frears "The Big Hit" with Tim Roth and John Hurt...

Mike Hodges GET CARTER (9/10) is a personal fave that is almost like a slice of life. As such I adore the ending. It brings the relationship between Carter and the audience to a jarring halt. We shouldn't like this "Bad man", we shouldn't enjoy his "merciless brutality". By the films conclusion however his strength of charecter has won us over, Maybe? If such an unredeemable charecter can inspire sympathy, what does that say of film watchers? or Societies one dimensional predjudices that renders any person as "pure evil". Maybe even the worse person has something that even the best people lack? Just a thought I had in regards to the originals "abrupt" ending (refuse to discuss the remake (3/10)) Probably just reading "way" to much into it, as usual..........memo to self: lay of the smoke........(lol) Seriously though the story unfolds so subtlely it requires close scutiny ala "The Limey" or "Croupier" to really get to the nuts and bolts of...

In essense you are right, Marlowe... I couldn't stand the end where Carter just dies... how depressing... but perhaps, that is the reality, the truth of life, that no matter what injustice we right, we all die... [This message has been edited by Brock Landers (edited 09-22-2001).]

Well Marlowe, you said you didn't like the movie that much... I mean, was it the story, because I loved the whole story... I mean wouldn't you want revenge upon someone who abused your neice sexually? or even daughter? And Jack Carter was much more violent then most. I mean, Caine walking out onto the street buck nekkid with a shotgun was pretty damn cool... [This message has been edited by Brock Landers (edited 09-21-2001).]

*SPOILERS* well the review was great but the movie I didn't like that much I love the look the cinematography and there's certainly nothing wrong with Michael Caine in the lead but the movie just didn't agree with me. I can't Quite put my finger on it. well one thing was the ending I kind new what was going to happen but I liked him so much I didn't want him to be killed also it disturb me a bit more then I wanted to be disturb at the time. maybe in a different atmosphere or maybe if I watch the remake and see how bad that is I might appretated it more I don't know.

"Get Carter" 1971 - A Brock Landers Review of A Mike Hodges Film (9/10) *SPOILERS* This original version of the 2000 remake is arguably one of the best British gangster films ever made and I believe it to be the greatest role of Michael Caine's career (besides "The Man Who Would Be King", "Quills", "The Hand" & "SLEUTH"), when he had "it". Caine is brilliant and at the top of his game. It is much bleaker and infinitely more British than the remake, dark and brooding... Jack is not a good man... he is just a bad-ass cracker... and "Get Carter" is one goddamn, motherfucking, bad-ass movie all the way... revenge is sweet... Based on Ted Lewis' novel "Jack Returns", it is about a gang enforcer in London who returns home to NewCastle (famous for their beer) after his brother's death, apparently from drunk driving. One group of gangsters than another try to get Jack Carter in the ensuing "investigation". They apparently a...
