American Beauty is definitely one of the most overrated movies of all times. There was just something missing in this movie, I don`t know what.Like when you buy something and the package outside is great but in the inside it`s empty.
I wanted this movie be great before I saw it because I knew it was going to take the Oscar for best picture, but I was, ok , not disappointed but ...I can`t explain it.Anyway, the movie had its positive features also- great performances, the new talent of the year-Wes Bentley, that great scene with the paper bag...
As a whole however, nothing special for me - 6.3/10. | | Static Link |

| Posted by: Ender at November 9, 2001, 12:26 am | | Topic: American Beauty: (9/10) Forum: JoBlo | | I think the main reason why AMERICAN BEAUTY struck such a chord with most people is because Lester Burnham is one of the easiest characters to identify with in film history. Who hasn't, at one point or another, been dissatisfied, disgusted, or even mysitified at the direction their life has taken. Who hasn't at some point just wanted to say "Fuck 'em all, I'm doing this my way"? So it's easy to see why folks get a kick out watching Lester's personal odyssey, and why the inevitable results have such an impact. 10/10. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Cyclonus at November 8, 2001, 10:57 pm | | Topic: American Beauty: (9/10) Forum: JoBlo | | It's pretty good, I don't see why some think it's overrated, although I can understand why it could make people uncomfortable. I can see why VonEerie likes Thora Birch so much, now she's one of my faves! 8/10. | | Static Link |

It was probably because I did not feel any connection toward the characters and the turn of events that occured in the end were really strange. Although I did not connect with the plot, the acting and cinematography were definitely something special. If you guys liked this movie, check out Ghost World (starring Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi). That movie left me breathless. | | Static Link |

I can never decide which is the best. Anyways, American Beauty definately affects me the most. It is a movie that makes you question your significance in life, and leaves you thinking about it for days after every time you see it. The film builds up very powerfully bit by bit until the denoument just leaves you in awe. It is written incredibly well by Alan Ball. The characters are so unique and unforgettable, yet they are also just everyday icons of modern suburban life. A perfect movie, 10/10. It is my favourite movie of all time and has reached levels of emotion, enjoyment and satisfaction I have never imagined possible on film. Didn't Ender say just a little while not to go and post more than 1 picture on a post? | | Static Link |

To this day I still don't. The film is brilliant and is funny for much a sly drama. I almost pinned it a fuckin comedy! The film is probably,IMO,one of the top 10 films of the 90's and Spacey probably gave the best performance of the 90's as the annoyed LESTER BURNHAM, a man like many american men are on the verge of a so-called "awakening" or a mid-life crisis as the masses like to call it. Anywho, one day Lester's daughter Jane presents her friend ANGELA(played by newcomer Mena Suvari) as an average gothic girl, wants breast implants and becomes mutually attracted to the weird yet suttle boy next door(Wes Bentley). Lester's wife played by Annete Benning, this in my IMO was her best performance of her fucking career, which is what Lester's wife is obsessed about, her fucking career I... | | Read Entire Entry |
