Given my love for history and my admiration for Benicio Del Toro I will definitely see these films. I'm sure Oscar flies are buzzing over Del Toro as I type this. On the other hand, I too agree that Che is idealized by too many people who don't know jack shit and wear his t-shirts (aparently the most famous image of all time, surpassing Jesus Christ!) so that's annoying. I do hope that Soderbergh (who is completely hit and miss with me) does history justices and shows the truth about Che, the good and bad qualities, the latter dominating the former. Communism is nice on paper but will never work in practice, and when it's attempted it leaves the people of that nation miserable for the most part. I hope Soderbergh realizes this and has it in mind while making these movies.

Back on-topic for a moment... I agree that Che merchandising is quite a fad as most people wearing stuff featuring that image probably don't even know who he is, and if they do they certainly don't know what he stands for. But this is Steven Soderbergh, who even manages to make mainstream, big-budget star-studded films like the Ocean trilogy as if he's making an arthouse movie. This Flags of our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima-esque double feature thing will be, if anything, interesting: I'm not sure just how weird and unconventional Soderbergh will manage to make it, but be sure that Del Toro, who is pretty much almost ALWAYS good, will deliver a powerhouse performance. I'm more than excited for this, I'm a big Soderbergh fan and anything he does interests me, even if the end result is lacking (The Good German...)

I think Che is a fascinating character in history. Sure he did a lot of bad deeds, but I do believe he wanted to do it for the ultimate good he felt like he was doing. He obviously went too far, but I still find him to be such an interesting character in history. This two part will be epic in every definition of the word.

The way I look at it is this: Che is a lot like a carnival mirror. How you see him depends on where you stand. Some, like you, don't think that much of him. Others, like me, are split on him: I despise his methods but I can't deny the fact that he is extremely fascinating and a cultural icon. To others, he is a hero, and they will gladly overlook any of his misdeeds by pointing to equally/more terrible people that were supported by the US (Pinochet, Somoza, Diaz, D'abuisson).

TRAFFIC proves that Soderbergh is capable of examining complex topics (and people) and making them interesting. Being a fan of Latin American history, I've been eagerly anticipating this duology for a while. There's been no official confirmation yet (and probably won't be until April), but there is talk that ARGENTINE and GEURILLA will, respectively, open and close the Cannes film festival. There's also supposed to be an announcement of another Soderbergh-Damon film (following next year's INFORMANT) at Cannes.

Anyway I'd like to stick to the topic my babies lets not get into politics here. Let's discuss something we all know and love... MOVIES I started this thread because I for one liked Traffic and I thought a pairing of these two might make a good film or two films for that matter. I'm really not concerned with the "man" rather than his story and how Benicio and Steve are going to interpret this story on the silver screen. So with that being said do you think it'll make a good film?

"The Motorcycle Diaries" was pretty good; Gael Garcia Bernal is a good actor, so that helped. However, (and I know I'm about to start some sh!t), I gotta roll my eyes at not one, but two more movies that appear to idolize this so-called man. I'm generally pretty left of center when it comes to politics, but Che was a paranoid, murdering psycho. I don't see how forsaking a life of privilege and supporting a system which has never benefited the people in any of its incarnations erases the murders he committed. I believe that the CIA spreads misinformation, but we have so much evidence against this man, it's ridiculous. I go to a school where practically every other student wheres a t-shirt with his image. One, that's ironic, because people are making tons of cash off the likeness of a communist, and two, I have to fight the urge to illuminate my peers that they might as well bring along a Charles Manson lunchbox if they are gonna support that sociopath.

I loved The Motorcycle Diaries too, thought it was very well made and that Gael Garcia Bernal did a good acting turn. It'll be interesting to see what Benicio makes of Che, I reckon he'll fit the part wonderfully.

Benicio Del Toro playing Dr. Ernesto "CHE" Guevara de la Serna respectively in Steven Soderbergh's next directorial outing... The Argentine and Guerilla. What appear to be back to back sequels or just epic parts. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892255/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374569/ Last time these two paired up was for (if i am not mistaken) ... Traffic. Which garnered 4 Oscars. Two of which were Benicio and Soderbergh's first and only. One for Best Supporting Actor (Benicio Del Toro) and another for Best Director. I don't know about you guys but I kinda liked The Motorcycle Diaries. I just thought that it lacked doing Che some justice. I wouldn't mind watching this I'm just a little iffy about it being two films. What do you say?
