When it first came out, the themes didnt grab me and I thought "a movie about a guy driving an ambulance?" Sounds boring. But boy was I wrong. I decided that if Scorcese was involved, then it couldnt be all that bad. THank god I decided to finally check it out! It turned out to be one of my favorite Scorcese movies! My favorite part about it? Ving Rhymes as the religious paramedic. He absolutely made the movie for me! That scene where he is supposed to be healing that patient was nothing short of brilliant. Loved this movie, the direction, the acting and story ALL pulled me in. | | Static Link |

It's still high on my favourites, though....it really is a masterpiece: not only is it quite possibly Scorsese's best film visually, but it is an extremely profound and challenging film. There are no easy answers with the story. If you liked the movie I highly reccomend the novel by Joe Conelly...while maybe the movie isn't my top favourite anymore, the book is still my favourite book. I have to bring it with me wherever I end up living. So it's been everwhere I've been. Very sentimental. I never really understood why this wasn't appreciated more as a film. Just look at Scorsese's resume AFTER he made it: 3 films, 2 of them being nominated for best picture Oscars, one of them WINNING of course. Too bad BOTD didn't get caught up in the resurgence of Scorsese love mania. But seriously: brilliant, brilliant, fantastic, wonderful, amazing amazing film!!!! | | Static Link |

Man, do I miss that guy. Also Cliff Curtis is great in it as well. | | Static Link |

Scorsese delivered an off-beat story with Nicholas Cage playing a guy whose gone over the edge. Usually I can't stand Nicholas Cage because he overacts like crazy, but this was one of the times it worked for the role such as the scene when he asks to be fired. Nice small performance by Cliff Curtis who is one hell of an actor and severely underrated in my opinion. I also loved how Scorsese used Janie Jones by the Clash to match with the film through the hyper editing. It's one of my favorite songs of all time. | | Static Link |

It get's a little heavy handed towards the end and there isn't much meat to the plot but I think that's why I liked it. It wasn't about following a guy from the beginning of a journey and watching him grow and evolve, it was just a man going about his business doing a job most of us don't give much thought to. 8/10 | | Static Link |

It's a very unique story, setting, great characters, actors, direction, soundtrack - the movie hits a lot. Ving Rhames in the goth/industrial club is classic. | | Static Link |

I actually just bought this film a couple of weeks ago for 5 bucks and couldnt be happier. All the performances are great esp Cage as well as Rhames and Goodman. The soundtrack is really underrated as well (love Scorsese's use of The Rolling Stones) Solid fuckin film all around. 8/10 | | Static Link |
| Posted by: floydtheater07 at February 27, 2008, 10:50 pm | | Topic: Bringing Out The Dead Forum: JoBlo | | I'm surprised that this film isn't more widely appreciated. I know that some Scorsese fans like it, but I think it deserves far more respect than it receives. Some critics complained that it was dull, but I feel that it was insanely entertaining and engaging. Visually, it is superb, and Nicolas Cage, an actor who I'm usually not crazy about, delivers a superb performance. Plus, the film just has a sick sense of humor that only Scorsese can deliver. What do you guys think? | | Static Link |

I didn't think to much of it because I never really heard anything about it but when I watched it the first time it blew me away. Great jobs by Ving Rhames and Tom Sizemore and that one dude who kept asking for water. I think this movie deserves a lot more credit then it got. It also had some cool new camera angles and a sweet soundtrack. I'm gonna buy the dvd right now. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Ender at September 15, 2001, 4:53 am | | Topic: Bringing Out The Dead Forum: JoBlo | BRINGING OUT THE DEAD is the cinematic equivalent of a shot of Jack Daniel's. Surreal, haunting, poigniant, and at times funnier than hell. Solid and very intense performance from Cage, and one of the best supporting casts I've ever seen (especially John Goodman, who never gets the credit he deserves in my opinion). Scorcese must have been tripped out on something when he made this one, but it worked.
"You notice, people who see shit...always crazy."

This movie is the one of the best proof their is. The only negative point about it is the taxi driver ressemblance. Cause you gotta be blind if didn't notice. But except from that the movie mostly stand on his own. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: ilovemovies at September 14, 2001, 3:15 am | | Topic: Bringing Out The Dead Forum: JoBlo | Yes! One of 1999's unsung masterpieces! Great soundtrack, great cinematography, great acting! For all those Nicolas Cage haters: watch this movie if you think he is a still think he is a bad actor. The supporting cast is electric. I can't decide between which of the performances are my favorite: John Goodman's, Ving Rhame's or Tom Sizemore's. And Patricia Arquette is heartbreakingly good. A great film from a great director

A Paramount Pictures Release
Directed by Martin Scorsese
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Rosanna Arquette, Tom Sizemore, Ving Rhames, and John Goodman.
121 min/1999. Scorsese has brought to his credit, another great film. Bringing Out The Dead can be described as a comic, surreal, original look into the mind of a paramedic. That is exactly what it is. Nicolas Cage plays Frank, a guilt-ridden paramedic who has seen one too many deaths in his career. This has finally got to him. The film takes us through three days in his life on the streets of New York. One of the many good parts about this movie, is the acting. I have to say, the roles are flawless if somewhat overacted, but that gives the film its edge. Cage is the star of the film, but is outshone by his co-stars John Goodman, Ving Rhames and Tom Sizemore who are all brilliant in their supporting roles. I don't know if this was supposed to be a comedy, but there is some funny stuff coming from Cage and the medic who he is teamed w... | | Read Entire Entry |
