Friday the 13th 1980 Genre: badly acted cheesy slasher movie Rated: R Directed by: Sean S Cunningham Starring: Adrienne King, Laurie Bartham, Betsy Palmer, Jennine Tyler, Kevin Bacon Rating: ***/***** Plot crunch: A few teens hike up to camp crystal lake to fix up the cursed place, instead the smoke, drink and fuck- and you guessed it- get bumped off by an unseen assailant Critique: Chi chi chi, ha ha ha. The first in the seemingly endless Friday the 13th series is a delightful bit of fluff sure to entertain you for a few hours. It seems, I didn't know a good movier when I was first screeching at UrbanLegend23 for bashing the flick, I see it wasn't a good 10/10 movie like I had said. yes the movie makes no sense. yes it's pretty crappy, and yes it's so unbelievably cheesy you want to scream, but yes it is enjoyable. No it's not Gone with the Wind, or even Rocky Horror Picture Show, but it a far cry from the worst film ever (or even the worst of the series). The acting is over the top, and i hate Adrienne Kin...

Worth bumping to the top as yesterday bore the title.... "Friday the 13th" 1980 8/10 Directed by: Sean S. Cunningham ("DeepStar Six") Written by: Victor Miller Starring: Adrienne King, Betsy Palmer, and a relatively unknown Kevin Bacon Makeup/effects by: Tom Savini ("Dawn of the Dead") Plot: Teenage camp counselors are mysteriously mudered at a camp with a grisly past history- two murders and a child drowning. Is there a curse upon the camp...and if so is it supernatural or just some run of the mill crazy? Review: In general, I concur with most of what Cyclonus posted in his review. I'm apt, though, to give points for historical nature/impact. Rightly or wrongly this film is deemed a "classic" of the horror genre, or more correctly the slasher subgenre. In truth I am not a fan of the series but I can respect the feel of this film, the impact it has had on the field of horror, and awe at inspiring 9 (and soon to be 10) sequels. That, my friends is pretty incredible rega...

Sorry, I just got finished watching FRIDAY THE 13TH and I still can’t get over how funny it was. That was just by far the funniest comedy I’ve watched in a long time. Oh…what, you say? It’s meant to be a horror film? Even funnier! As much as I wanted to like this movie, I really just couldn’t bring myself to agree with the 4-star reviews that claim this movie to be “genre defining.” It defines comedy perfectly. But horror, as its intended genre is? No! I’ll just explain the comedy parts now – all of it. This is an endlessly unintentionally funny film, and that’s the only reason it kept me watching. The other movies such as Scream and Urban Legend borrowed this idea of a killer murdering people. And f13 did the same thing. Otherwise, F13 was somewhat of a dissapointment for me. It's kind of lagging at parts and the beginning is slow. I don't slasher flicks will ever get old if they have the right amount of suspense. But F13 doesn't provide much suspense because you never actually see the murderer (until the end) and only see a camera doing the murders. It's an O.K. horror flick not a masterpiece. 7/10

It's inevitable that someone would think of the genre just like they did twist-in-the-end movies and matrix-shoots. It was always going to come up. F13 has nothing to do with the franchises today! You know what the funny part is? I originally gave it a 4/10, but when I saw it for the second time, it seemed a lot better. In fact, with a few more plot complications (and a less cheesy ending), this could have been a 7, easily.

Friday the 13th (1980) Director: Sean S. Cunningham Cast: Adrienne King, Betsy Palmer, Harry Crosby, Laurie Bartram, Jeannine Taylor, Kevin Bacon, Mark Nelson, Robbi Morgan, Peter Brouwer, Walt Gorney Screenwriter: Victor Miller Producer: Sean S. Cunningham A Paramount Pictures release One of the difficulties in reviewing Friday the 13th is that like Halloween, the film has been imitated and ripped off numerous times, too often to look at it in a fresh light. As a matter of fact, this movie was made to cash in on the success of John Carpenter's film. Still, in the long run, this is actually one of the better 1980's slashers. Although it adheres to the traditional formula, it holds up better than much of the subgenre, including some of its own sequels. While the plot may be a bit thin, it does have a certain eerie, gritty atmosphere generally lacking in many other slashers. This is due in no small part to Sean S. Cunningham's effective lensing; in fact this may be the best-directed entry in the series. It did...

Friday the 13th is a movie that makes me feel very nostalgic fr the days when I was but a wee lad just begining my interest in the genre. It has such a rough charm to it I can't help but smile every time I watch it.Yes it isn't very original and not as ground breaking as Halloween or Black Christmas it is still in my opinion an american classic that really helped establish slashers as veritable franchises.Without it there would be no Scream,no Urban Legends (cough cough)and none of the horror franchises we have today.
God bless you Sean S. Cunningham, though it will never be considered as a true landmark in the world of cinema it will be remebered for its sheer, unapologetic rip off entertainment.

i give it a 5/10 while it wasnt scary at all, and you say it is predictable. YES NOW IT IS PREDICTABLE BUT BACK IN 1980 (WHEN IT WAS MADE) IT WASNT PREDICTABLE. I like the whole, mother being the killer thing but betsy palmer is a stupid crappy acting bitch head. However, I like the killing of Kevin Bacon and how Jason jumps out at the end. It didnt actually happened otherwise shed be dead. It happened because it shows he is there, which opens it up for sequels.

No offense, but all you guys saying how much it ''sucked'' always seem to mention ''laughing my ass off'' ''or laughing the entire time''... Wouldn't that constitute an enjoyable time with the film? There is no such thing as bad laughter, you know. If I laugh that much during a movie, I give it a glowing review, regardless of whether the comedy was intentional or not

"Trash Bag Man", there is one, and only one rule on this Discussion Board, and that is RESPECT. We advertise that when a new schmoe comes to the board that he/she read the rules and guidelines before they post. It is quite obvious that you have failed to do so. Your two-word comment was not only rude and insulting, but it was also unconstructive. It didn't add anything to the thread, nor did it explain why you felt that way, or why you decided to post such a comment. Now, this is the first time I've ever given out a warning, and I shouldn't have to, but frankly, you've earned it. This is your first official WARNING, and the only warning you will get while being on the boards. The next time you decide to insult, disrespect, etc. a fellow schmoe, you will find yourself banned from the boards. Thanks. I just wonder how everyone would rank Friday the 13th if you just saw it in the theatres for the first time in 1980 - when 'suprise' endings wasn't expected, long before the Screams/I Know..Summer/Urban Legends etc.. My girlfriend said the same thing about Friday - being very funny and not the least bit scary, yet I still feel her, and perhaps others, would say differently if this was 22 years earlier. -Belial. ps: Friday 10/10

How the hell did the creators of these flicks convince the studios for money to make 10( i have to commend them on that.)after the first one was so shitty?!! Friday the 13th films are trash. Pleeeease, Halloween bored me to tears the first time I saw it (basically because its been copied beyond belief), and its first sequel is clumsy and dumber than Friday the 13th. Now for some background info. I bought this film without first having seen it, but because it had heard both good and bad things about it, so I decided to judge for myself. Number 1, this film, I don't think, was ever made to be taken too seriously. I agree, this movie is badly acted, and written, except by Betsy Palmer who gives a great psychotic performance. Now, there are two reasons, and two reasons only, as to why I like this movie in the least bit. I love the creepy mood and atmosphere. And, I love to creative death sequences. Those are the only two things going for it. The run-down/deserted camp setting is great, and adds a certain air of mystery to the film. The main reason I liked that is because i live in a desert. Forests are cool to me because I never see them. The death sequences are creepy, yet cool. And I'm not a fan o...

I seriously found it hard to find any redeeming qualities in the movie. Sure its an 80's horror movies and killing is everything...but for me it lacked a good conclusion, plausible performances, style, interest and overall it just sucked the big one. If you like a film with killing and gore[and nothing else important]this is probably for you. If you like elements other than this, look elsewhere. This movie was so laughable it hurt. The acting was soooooooo cheesy. What about the part where the girl finds the weapon in the trunk and says "What is going on?". Everyone's disappearing, you find a dangerous weapon in a trunk and you ask what's going on ?!?
