Played Resident Evil 2 once, wasn't my thing, so I traded it for Metal Gear Solid. I didn't enjoy all the wandering and zombie-hunting, but one thing I admired was the atmosphere. A distant, but ever-present sense of doom, that these ugly, horrible creatures were out there, coming for me. As scary games go, it was terrifying... so for a moment, the idea of a movie, perhaps injecting some life into the long dead (!) B-Movie zombie franchise. Resident Evil could, perhaps very easily, have been a scary movie that was (for a change) actually scary. Alas, from the sterile and trendy trailer comes a sterile and trendy movie. Conventional zombies, conventional characters and oh, such a conventional soundtrack are all Resident Evil has going for it. Milla Jovonich (spelling?) has convenient, spot-the-poor-screenwriters amnesia until a late moment, so the plot advances slowly. My friends dragged me to see it with them and I thought it would just be another weak gory horror flick, however it had a great story and was very well acted. There was nothing really new or innovative about the direction and the story was the same as the game's but it was a non-stop thrill ride nonetheless. All the actors did an awesome job with their parts and I was very happy with the results. Definitely worth seeing! 8/10 | | Static Link |

The advanced computer technology allowed them to find another areas to search within for new ideas. With a new generation having computer video games as essentials on their PCs before other educational or even entertaining programs, there were no doubt producers will go digging in that mine. After movies based on hit video games like Mario, Mortal Combat and the dazzling Tomb Raider, here comes another “adaptation” for the widely known game Resident Evil. And, to my surprise, the movie is a lot better than anyone would expect. Not that it’s a major achievement on any level; it still manages to be a very entertaining and thrilling Sci-Fi action and horror extravaganza. Before you start talking about how silly it is I ask you to think twice about why and how this movie was made. The easiest way to discribe this movie is ALIENS meets DAWN OF THE DEAD. There was some nice gore and action. The acting was also good, but some of the characters were a bit over the top. I would have liked this movie more if it stuck to more roots from the game. Like the mansion, or the characters, if it had more monsters (hunters and tyrants wuld be nice). But in the end this was stylish and likeable. I can recommended it. 7/10 | | Static Link |

I thought Resident Evil was everything a horror movie needs to be. I can't think of any elements that were missing from this film that every horror movie should have. You've got your lovely looking woman, like Milla Jovovich who looks absolutely stunning a red dress that is continuously getting more and more stripped and torn as the movie gets along...big plus ++. There also the essential element of music here. Unlike some horror movies these days this flick is definitely full of awesome music that continuously fits the mood of the film. After years and years hearing rumors about making it into a movie, I was completely psyched when it came out earlier this year. Even though none of the video game characters were in the movie, I did enjoy the new characters and the new plot. The movie wasn't so much scary as it was real intense at times. I bought the DVD the day it came out, but now I hear that there will be a "director's cut"-type DVD released later down the road. And Mira Sorvino is scheduled to play the part of game character Jill Valentine when "Resident Evil: Nemesis" is released next October. Can't wait!! | | Static Link |

However, it manages to spread trough the air-conditioning system (!!!) into the entire secret, maximum security research center. Whatever. A group of people come in to save the day, and find out that the employees have turned into flesh-eating zombies. Resident Evil has got to be one of the best game-to-movie conversions I've seen in a while. Unlike some previous game-to-movie conversions (Super Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat: Annihilation), this movie delivered all of the goods. Fans of the game shouldn't be disappointed, neither should fans of zombie movies (myself included there). Paul Anderson did a great job directing this movie. There's plenty of blood, gore, violence and zombies in 'Resident Evil', and it managed to keep me happy. There were a few jump scenes, only one of which actually got me! The score for Resident Evil gives the viewer the right feel for this movie, and suits the setting extremely well. I have only one problem with this movie and that is that the special effects were a little 'fake-looking'. I am not very familiar with the video game having only played it once(very briefly though). Milla Jovovich is cool and sexy as hell as a woman who wakes up dazed and confused and finds herself along with an elite team of the Umbrella cooperation to find out what happened inside a top-secret research complex deep underground. I especially liked the computer shots of the hive and how it zoomed in on where the team was. I have to disagree here. I mean, you have to give this film credit for being exactly what it advertised to be - a big-screen adaptation of a video game. Not being familiar with the actual game I cannot nitpick for inconsistencies or departures from the storyline, etc. I can, however, laud it for slick and perfectly disgusting SFX, neat CGI and some pretty interesting sets. Seeing Milla prance around in various, uh, revealing garments was a plus. I don't think the film took itself too seriously and I don't think we should either.
I feel like some of the audience were lost at certain plot turns but overall it was a fun ride and a nice, mindless way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I give this a slimy, blood covered 6.5/10 | | Static Link |

I swear my heart was pounding so hard during the first half hour and the zombie attacks that it would burst out of my chest like some kind of malevolent G-strain monster from Resident Evil 2. This is probably my favorite action/suspense movie of 2002, right up there with Collateral Damage and Black Hawk Down. The CGI wasn't overbearing and horrible, which surprised me since this movie was shot on a tight budget compared to most Hollywood films. There were a few plot holes, which were mentioned already in this forum, such as a certain person's sudden "change of character," and more specifically his motivation for his actions. I loved the interesting plot twist where a certain character I thought going into the film was instant zombie chow turned out to survive till the finale,(SPOILER ALERT!) only to be snatched out the train door by the licker. I thought maybe he'd survive after all but alas, my expectations were... | | Read Entire Entry |

I thought this was a very good movie, if you can survive the first 15 minutes of it without walking out or falling asleep, (which I almost did). After that though its a good movie. Will it win any Awards? No. But is it a good way to spend 8.00 and 100 minutes of your life? Absolutly! | | Static Link |

I loved it and will go see it more times.
Its based on the game but u cant really say its a game movie but its the bomb. | | Static Link |

I am a hardcore fan of the game series. And yes this was a prequel to the first game. Lots of stuff was explained in this movie that was never explained in the games. Like how the accident at the lab even happened. And how the Licker (the bad ass creature in the film) was created. The story starts off about 2 weeks to a month before the first games story starts...before the mansion is overrun by the infected Umbrella workers. And it ends when Alice (Milla J.) wakes up some weeks later in the Umbrella owned research hospital in Raccoon City. This is right around the RE2 and Nemesis storylines. What is basically happening is a new character for Resident Evil has been created, and instead of playing the character in a game you watch her kick serious undead ass on the big screen. This movie had all of the true elements of Resident Evil if not the characters. And lets face it folks...Why does it matter who the character is if the movie still feels like th... | | Read Entire Entry |
