I actually got to see this piece of crap of a film last year at my theater as part of a horror movie marathon, and it was absolutely horrible. The story is awful, the pace is off, the acting...the movie is a pile of crap. This is one of those movies that has no redeeming values at all. However, to be fair, the movie started out decently. It's early on though the first 20 minutes into the movie when shit answers the door. And please tell me....Spoilers... ...When the boy found one of...

No, I don't think it is, at least not in the USA (part 2 is though).

I will definitely see the whole thing if I get the chance. I wish my video store carried it. Hell, maybe I'll just buy it and if I don't like it (doubtful) then I'll just sell it. Does anyone know if it's available on DVD yet?

@ Mike I'm glad you got something out of it, but I would recommend that you rent it and watch the whole thing; that is the only way to make an accurate accessment of any film. When you do that, post again and tell us what you think. I still have to contend that TCM is a much better treatment of the same idea; for me it really delivered. It's one of the defining moments in horror. In contrast, Craven's film is just a little footnote, forever destined to be overshadowed by Tobe Hooper's greater achievement.

I only got to see the last 30 minutes or so of this movie. I was flipping through channels late one night and it was on and only had about 30 minutes left, but being a horror fan I decided to see what it was like anyway. I got completely engrossed in it right away and I found it to be pretty damn disturbing. I want to see the whole movie really bad but unfortunately my video store doesn't carry it. I didn't like TCM but what I saw of this was pretty solid, it's what TCM should have been in my opinion.

Decent review, Cyclonus. The film does sort of come off as TCM lite. I enjoyed it, however, as it is quite different from what has become the formulaic single wordless killer stalking teenagers. I like the fact that we get to see the inter-workings of both "families". We also get human faces which are always scarier than the high tech CGI monster of the week. These cannibals are fucked up and freaky. Some of the dialogue and fucked-up gymnastics boy sort of rubbed me the wrong way, but its something that I sort of blow off as 70's schtick and overlook in the end. Overall its a nice change of pace from what modern horror films have become. A few freaky moments, some desolate/creepy backgrounds, and one sadistic bunch of fucked up freaks living in BFE. Good stuff.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977) Director: Wes Craven Cast: Susan Lanier, Robert Houston, Martin Speer, Dee Wallace-Stone, Russ Grieve, Michael Berryman, John Steadman, James Whitworth, Virginia Vincent, Lance Gordon Screenwriter: Wes Craven Producer: Peter Locke A Vanguard release After breaking into horror films with the notorious Last House on the Left, director Wes Craven made another attempt to corner the market with The Hills Have Eyes. The film was an attempt to cash in on the success of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre by imitating the formula; a family is trapped in the desert wilderness on a cross-country trip, only to be stalked by another family--of cannibals. Who will survive and who will be someone's next lunch? The film has an eerie, desolate atmosphere, its low budget giving it a feel of gritty authenticity. It refuses to gloss over the violence, making everything feel nasty and queasy. However, it doesn't really work, despite its best efforts. Tobe Hooper's landmark film still holds up today, retaining...
