Acting is unremarkable, direction, location, music, plot, all basic and nothing to write home about. About the only thing that could be said about this movie is the amount of language that was used (although it’s nowhere near as much as South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut), and that’s not something to brag about. The characters were all basic, no or barely any development to them, and they were just general people in Detroit. The plot is nothing new, just basically a “day in the life of” movie. We follow Jimmy Smith, Jr. (Eminem). Could screenwriter Scott Silver think of a cleverer name? His nickname is Bunny Rabbit, aka Rabbit, aka B-Rabbit, and he’s a struggling rapper who has to move in with his mom Stephanie (Kim Basinger) and little sister Lily (Chloe Greenfield), while being the only white rapper out there, being that this is supposed to be semi-autobiographical. He is “discriminated” against, but he works his way up…love these ... | | Read Entire Entry |

I was hoping from more from director Curtis Hanson. I was plesently suprised. 8 Mile dosnt try to be anything. It dosnt try to be an anoying "make it to the top" movie like Maria's Glitter, or an anoying bonding movie like Brittney's Crossroads, AND its not even filled to the brim with ONLY songs by the artist (minus the closing titles, but hey, give him that) It just trys to downplay the story of NOT EMINEM, but an ordinary guy, living in a shitty neighborhood, trying to make it big. The ending is not some huge yay everybodies happy and sucking eachothers dicks ending, its simple, and very satisfying. Sometimes the diologue did feel a bit off, but that was easilly covered by Eminem's suprisingly engaged performance, brilliant film making, and the best damn storyline about an artist in the last 5 years. 7.5/10 | | Static Link |

Wait a minute. It's not about his life? You could've fooled me. They should have called this movie the Eminem Show. 'Cause it's basically his life, and we hear all about it in his music (which kicks ass by the way) and writer, Scott Silver just happened to have a script about a freestyling, poor white boy who lives in a trailer with his fucked up mom? Yeah right. If this movie had come out before Eminem's huge success, and if we didn't know anything about him, then I would've loved this movie. But seeing as how I walked into this movie knowing exactly what was going to happen, it didn't really have me at the edge of my seat or anything. We all know Eminem had a troubled life, his mom's a bitch, poor as poor can be, and he had a dream of becoming the greatest rap artist of all time. 8 Mile just basically took all of Eminem's songs and they transformed them into a script. Wow! The only thing I give credit to in this film... | | Read Entire Entry |

As an Arabic young person, I feel that it is too far from my culture and my taste. It was accidentally that I heard one of Eminem’s songs while I was shopping for some CDs, and it instantly drew my attention. The song was “Cleaning Out My Closet” from his latest album, The Eminem Show. I bought the CD and, as a bonus, there was a DVD with some of his video-clips and a teaser trailer for his feature film debut, 8 mile. To my surprise the same song was used as background music for the trailer, which was surprisingly effective. And when I knew that it’s being directed by Curtis Hanson, the man behind some glorious movies like Wonder Boys and L. A. Confidential, I was certain that Eminem is going to get it right with this film. Unlike Mariah Cary and Brittany Spears’s embarrassing films, 8 Mile is a superb drama that is worth all the critical and commercial success it’s getting. As for Eminem’s music, I can most honestly say that i... | | Read Entire Entry |

Eminem did such a wonderful job with everything not only is it about some parts in his life but the battles, and everything he did every detail in that movie was great! I will always go back and see that movie I rate it 9/10 or 10/10 because it is the best damn movie ever! It rocked and I hope Eminem does some more movies because not only is he a GREAT singer but he is a WONDERFUL actor. He's hot and he is made for the camera!!! And for people to diss him like that makes me very angry yes they have there opinions it's a America der...but please i am sure that he didnt put the message out there that rappers can do well. They can do well, he doesn't need to prove it. Like he said in Cosmo Girl, he said he wanted to make a movie that ment something for it to have a reason on making it. And he did. That was great reason for making it. It shows people who are white and black liek racisim and rapping, and cheating and alot of drama It was great it covered up all the stuff in America ... | | Read Entire Entry |

Nothing spectacular anywhere. Eminem proved the rappers actually can act. But the story has been played out a thousand times. The supporting cast I felt was decent, definately did not take aaway from the film. My biggest problem was Brittany Murphy. She really served no purpose. Basically she screwed rabbit and that was about it. 5/10 | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Porscha at April 27, 2003, 6:03 pm | | Topic: Reviews: 8 Mile Forum: JoBlo | | I was dissapointed at the film. Em's character really got on my nerves. I mean Eminem is one of my favorite rappers but if the story was based on his life they really watered his personality down, especially when he caught his girl doing what she did and still acted like everything was alright. I think the music made the movie. I give it a the movie a C- But I give Slim Shady an A+ in acting. I know they wanted to make the man have a heart . I think he does. But they could have done the movie better and less predictable. I dont think Em really cared for it. That's the impression I got from his interviews. | | Static Link |

I think it would have been a lot better withsome minor adjustments and I think Eminem did a good job, but to me the story got boring at times and I got tired of that same grim a$$ looking scenery. | | Static Link |

It's a good film but I felt like I was missing something, Eminem and all the supporting players all did a wonderful job at portraying their characters, but I felt a little disappointed. | | Static Link |

A truly inspiring piece of filmmaking. No, the story is not terribly original, but director Curtis Hanson managed to turn a cliched yarn into an excellent film. Newcomer Eminem turns in an astounding performance. He has a lot of depth, and charm. I smell a big career for this rapper. Whether you think he is a true artist or a menace to today's youth, you cannot deny his Oscar-worthy performance its due. The supporting cast all do their jobs well. The cinematography is spectacular. It feels very rough and gritty which fits the film like a glove. Overall, this is an amazing flick, that I really enjoyed back when I saw it in November. 9/10 | | Static Link |

I like alot of Eminem's music so I think that maybe why I wasn't as critical as I should've been. Even though I doubt he would really kick everybody's ass who pissed him off in real life, his character fit the bill. I think his raps made the film though, this was the most entertaining part and the fact that his friends seemed to be like dudes we all hung out with or knew when we were/are growing up. 7/10 | | Static Link |

| Posted by: bigred760 at November 13, 2002, 11:27 am | | Topic: Reviews: 8 Mile Forum: JoBlo | | We've all seen this kind of movie before: the one where the main character seems like a loser in the beginning, we follow his/her life for a while, watch him/her become stronger, and in the end overcome his fear and beat whatever obstacle that was in his way just two hours before. There's nothing new about the story, but this is a good movie. I mean, this is the first time where I've seen the obstacle is not being able to stand in front of peers, rapping better than his "opponent", cuss words flying everywhere, and the main character getting some at his place of work. Eminem does a pretty good job of playing a character based on Eminem. I can safely say it was better than Mariah Carey's Glitter, and I only saw 10 minutes of that when it came on HBO (okay 15, she's hot). The rest of the supporting cast provides enough drama, laughs, and well, support, that the movie is interesting enough to follow. The ending is predictable in that you know Eminem is going to be the hero in the end, but how he does ... | | Read Entire Entry |
| Posted by: DieHardBruceFan at November 12, 2002, 12:58 pm | | Topic: Reviews: 8 Mile Forum: JoBlo | | Eminem is basically playing himself in this flick-and that's a good thing. He gives a tight, honest performance that is better than the movie itself. I love Hanson's other movies, LA CONFIDENTIAL is one of my all time favorites and I adored the first two-thirds of WONDER BOYS but felt it fell apart in the last act of the film. But 8 MILE doesn't have the cinematic energy that those films have. All the performances are just as good as any other Hanson flick, but the film itself never soars or excites. I enjoyed the rap battles the most out of anything in this movie because those scenes had the most energy. Overall, 8 MILE is worth seeing but don't expect to get blown away. | | Static Link |

I don't consider myself a fan of eminem, but i thought that he did a good job in the movie. True, 8 Mile is sort of a depiction of his life, but that fact doesn't necessarily translate to a good performance (Mariah Carey in Glitter anybody!). You could say that the movie is sort of Rocky-esque- the guy who's down and out, nothing going for him, but for some reason you wan tot root for him. Kim Basinger, perhaps not the right person for the role, did a good job as his unemployed, sexually frustrated, bingo-loving mother. Perhaps she looked too good for the role, but she's hot, so what would we expect?!?!? Mekhi Phifer did a good job as Future, B. Rabbit's hip-hop mentor. His rap skills aren't the greatest, but he wasn't terrible. As a fan of hip-hop, I enjoyed hearing songs from the east coast (Mobb Deep's "Shook Ones"- easily their best song ever), west coast (Tupac), and the south (Outkast's "Player's Ball"). There we... | | Read Entire Entry |

Eminem stars as Jimmy "Bunny Rabbit" A young white kid from the poor side of Detroit...the other side of 8 Mile. Working from job to job and living with his white trash trailor mom played by Kim Basinger and his younger sister Lilly. Much has been made about Eminem's big screen debut and playing a part he is all too familiar with, just a vehicle to sell soundtracks and his album maybe... I am not a fan of Eminem or his music in general, but enjoyed him in this film...because he is convincing and likeable and carries the film. Yes he is supported by other fine actors such as Basinger, Brittany Murphy as Eminem's new girl and Mekhi Phifer as his friend and true believer of his rapping skills...but it is all Eminem's show an he does a very admirable job. Yes the story is pretty familiar of an outsider, underdog from the other side who struggles and succeeds in a prejudice and harsh envir... | | Read Entire Entry |
| Posted by: Fergus at November 11, 2002, 9:32 pm | | Topic: Reviews: 8 Mile Forum: JoBlo | | Curtis Hanson brings to “8 Mile” his ingenuity and expertise, fresh off the critical successes of the “very hush, hush” L.A. Confidential, and well-acted Wonder Boys. He’s proven he has the capabilities to make good films, so why would 8 Mile be any different? The problem with his new film isn’t his direction at all; I actually think that’s the best part of 8 Mile. The problem stems into another territory and has more to do with the characters and the story, which seem better suited for an ABC TV movie of the week. 8 Mile is the type of film that’s been made a hundred times—about the brilliant loser who can’t get his act together that would be “Rabbit,” played by Eminem….and anyone should be able to predict the rest. The story fans out Rocky-style, with profanity to spare. The most interesting aspect of the predictable storyline is the setting in Detroit, following the life of a rising Rap artist. But where are the characters? I see em’, but I don’t really care what they eventually go through, or who they ar... | | Read Entire Entry |
