I didn't think the film was that bad like some others think. It was set in a wonderful location captured by great cinematography and the acting is good. Overall, it's a film that I quite enjoyed. However, having said that, I haven't read the book although I'd like to. Anyway, I give it a 6/10.

OK, the main reason i didn't like the film was probably because i read the book. The book is much better; more exciting, the characters are better fleshed out. Plus the film cuts out one of the books best characters- Jed- while also completely changing the ending and making it crappy! Maybe it would have been better if it had stayed truer to it's source material (and if Danny Boyle had chosen McGregor over DiCaprio)! I do like Robbie Carlyle as Daffy in it tho

I liked it. Cinematography and the soundtrack were wonderful and it had mainly good acting. The problem was that the script started to fall apart at the end of 2nd act. The film didn't seem to know anymore where it was going and had some misguided solutions. For example the video game sequence was cute and clever in it's own right, but it didn't fit with rest of the film. The whole aspect of Leo going crazy didn't work. It was not established well enough and the transformation was too fast. Leo did a good job, but the script and the director didn't serve him well. Still, I would give it 6/10. Maybe even 7/10. It's definitely underrated.

Well, you didn't like it, OK. But why didn't you like it? Its really annoying when people just say "it sucked" and don't say why.

The Beach (7/10) Wow, lots of The Beach basing going on here! Well, I think the movie is underrated. It wasn't perfect, but underrated. The acting was good, the story interesting and constantly changing, the cinematography was breathtaking and you never knew what was going to happen next. It did have its problems...but the film was overall original and enjoyable. I'd love to read the book if I can be bothered one day.

Sorry i have to disagree with you on this film. I wanted to love this movie. I read the book and it remains one of my favorite books of all time. It seems like they really wanted to capture the kind of dreamy surreal quality of the book with a nightmarish edge but sadly they failed for the most part. Leonardo seemed completely miscast (why ddint they stay with the British character from the book) and Sal came off as completely flat. The romance between Richard and the French girl seemed to be akward and uneven in the story. in the book the two never made love leaving some sexual tension. Here the things comes off as flat and confusing. Many times they seemed to want to try really hard (notice the video-game transiton sequence) to etablish the themes of surrealism and invasion of the Western World on other cultures. While the movie did retain many of the cynical qualities of the book nothing really jelled. The ending was incredibly boring and anti-climatic. To think it was leading all up to that. I really hat...

DH I cant believe you gave this a 10/10 However Im sorta with DH on alot of it. I found this movie to have a beautiful soundtrack, great cinematography and an awkward story. The things that dragged down the movie for me were the slow middle and the video game parts. To me its an 8/10, underrated I guess.

It had a couple of nice scenes (all of them involving Virginie Ledoyen), but it was very uneven, not knowing what it was supposed to be from one moment to the next. I felt the same thing with A LIFE LESS ORDINARY.

For the first time (other then Gigli) I gotta agree with DH. SPOILERS The Beach I just recentley checkedout after hearing DH1989 talk about it and I must say "Thank You!". This movie was amazing. The visuals and the cinematography was brilliant and Leo DiCaprio delivers his best performance. When Leo goes crazy, I was astounded by the performance of him. The scene I loved, which is now one of my favorites is when Leo pretends he s inside of a video game. Damn, that was great. ***1/2 ut of ****

From the trailers, I expected a thriller set in a spectacular area. Well, I got the spectacular area. What we have here is a film that is trying to be too many things. Part of it wants to be a drama, another part wants to be a psychological thriller, and finally another part just wants to appeal to a young audience. All of them mixed together in this case do not work well, and the combined effect equals Leonardo DiCaprio running around on the island acting like a "Lord Of The Flies" reject, eating caterpillars and acting insane. This movie has great scenery and a great location. Unfortunately, it fails to live up to the great potential that it had. 4/10

I wanted to see an exotic adventure movie with great cinematography, but THE BEACH didn't take advantage of the great location. Not terrible, but terribly disappointing. Hopefully someday a great looking island adventure movie will be made, but THE BEACH isn't it. Grade: 5/10 or C- Wow Mike, you took the words right out of my mouth! I agree 100%!!!

Yeah, I gave it a 4/10 (D+) when I saw it, but since it has been so long since I've seen it I can't remember if it was quite bad enough for a 4/10 (D+), so I decided to go with a 5/10 (C-). But now that you mention it, the movie was all over the place. But it still "looked" great. I'd have to see it again in order to give it an accurate rating, but I do know that I wasn't too crazy about it.

SPOILERS! This film is a spectacular ride. The basic plot is simple: A man(DiCaprio), along with two French companions, goes in search of a secret island, a paradise. They consider themselves "travelers" instead of "tourists". They do not go to a place to rent a hotel room, fill it with all of the American products we love, and see all the museums filled with artifacts. They want an "adventure". An experience worthy of remembrance. They want to have a scar, not a snapshot that fails to capture a moment(or so they do at the start). That is what, IMO, makes this film fascinating. The philosphy it has of traveler vs. tourist. Brilliant stuff. The characters are all played brilliantly. DiCaprio, my all-time favourite actor, plays Richard, the lead. He has come to Thailand in search of an adventure. He wants to leave the realm of "typical American tourists". This is evident from the first 10 minutes, where he drinks snake blood on a dare from a Thai street vendor. DiCaprio ...
