| Posted by: john_rambo at June 3, 2008, 5:59 pm | | Topic: American History X Forum: JoBlo | | I finally saw this movie today... and it may just be one of my new favorite movies. It is such a powerful story, and I do not know how Roberto Benigni won Best Actor over Edward Norton (let alone Tom Hanks). The story was just a great tale of redemption. I do not know why this did not get more consideration for awards. I can not say enough about this movie... what do you guys think? 10/10 | | Static Link |
| Posted by: LedFloyd at March 6, 2004, 4:47 pm | | Topic: American History X Forum: JoBlo | | 8/10. A little overrated and at times a tad melodramatic, but I was still moved by it. Norton gives a phenomenal performance, the film has the courage to be brutal, it looks good, and the end was incredibly moving. Not a classic, but close. | | Static Link |

The neo-nazi parts made me sick to my stomach, but the deep meaning and moral of the film was great. The acting was brilliant, and so was the script. This easily goes down as one of the best movies I've seen in my lifetime. Opinions? (was that the kid that was in t2 that's the protagonist' brother?) | | Static Link |

Loved how the scenes from the past were in Black and White and the present day scenes were in colour. It worked beautifully and I think that you guys have praised it enough, so I don't need to add muh more. Anyone who hasn't seen this, should see it. Although, it's not a movie for everyone. But every moviebuff must see this powerful movie. | | Static Link |

A very poweful film that features my favorite actor, Ed Norton, in one of his more beefier roles. Edward Furlong was great as the Danny. I found the conclusion and some minor "almost" plotholes to be a little iffy but in the end its just one solid package. 8.5/10 | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Lazy Boy at July 22, 2003, 4:05 pm | | Topic: American History X Forum: JoBlo | | This is a film worthy of deep discussion, as it attempts to portray racial tension and bigotry for what it is. Edward Norton is strong in the lead, but the supporting cast (Fairuza Balk, Stacy Keach) seem a little too cartoonish and over-the-top. The movie has its strengths; the curb scene is wretching in its blunt brutality, the brilliant dinner discussion involving Rodney King, etc. and its basic arc of a man who is reformed enough to leave the senseless life he once lived. There are flaws to be mentioned: the tone of the film can become a bit preachy at times, as characters grandstand and wax philosophical over shots of beaches or basketball courts. Also, maybe it was just me, but I didn't really buy the Norton character's transition from young kid to racist skinhead. The flashback scene with the father at the table didn't cut it for me... Still, despite its heavy handed problems and controversy over who exactly was directing the damn thing, American History X is definitely must-see for students and peopl... | | Read Entire Entry |

| Posted by: urbanlegend23 at September 21, 2001, 5:18 pm | | Topic: American History X Forum: JoBlo | | I could not applaud this film more. What really make this movie are 2 people. First is Tony Kaye, you have done a breathtaking directing job in turning what potentially could’ve been a replay of all the racist movies over the past years into a film that I will never forget. Whenever something comes up on the news about Nazis, skinheads, African-American fights etc I’ll remember this film. Second person and probably the person who deserves it most is Edward Norton. Edward, your performance has changed my life. I have never seen a male give what is such an effortlessly amazing and truly masterpiece of a performance. Were you really acting, Ed, or was Tony Kaye just following you around for a few years? Kudos also to script-writers, Edward Furlong, other supporting characters and good cinematography and design which flips from black-and-white to colour cleverly. This movie is totally violent, has a lot of coarse language and is extremely graphic about all its subjects. This is what they should really be teachin... | | Read Entire Entry |

| Posted by: Dr. Movielove at July 6, 2001, 3:06 am | | Topic: American History X Forum: JoBlo | This film can be compared with Malcom X. Not because they both end in X, but because they're both films about racism. Malcom X shows you what it's like to be against racism, while American History X shows you what it's like to be for racism and American History X does a good job at that. Like most independent films it takes you where Hollywood won't go. It has Norton's best performance as well as one of the best performances of 98. The film is also very brilliant which makes it one of the best films of 98. If you haven't seen it you should go rent it immediately.

Directed by Tony Kaye. Written by David McKenna. Running time: 118 minutes. Rated R (for graphic brutal violence, including rape, language, strong sexuality and nudity). CAST:
Derek Vinyard: Edward Norton
Danny Vinyard: Edward Furlong
Doris Vinyard: Beverly D'Angelo
Cameron Alexander: Stacy Keach
Seth: Ethan Suplee
Bob Sweeney: Avery Brooks This is,in my opinion,a brilliant film. It's about two brothers(Norton,Furlong) who are drawn in to a Neo-Nazi group.Obcourse, one of them decides to become free from The Group. During the whole film,it was always interesting and it was always compelling.Even though it contained as much provacative as some other films like,"Do The Right Thing" and all the other rally Movies. During some of the opening sequences,a couple Black Youths try to steal Derek's car and he shoots them dead. He's sentenced to Prison for three years. The Film is supposed to be about the 24 hour period after Derek is released from Prison. The most... | | Read Entire Entry |
