Nice try. Any of you who claimed to have enjoyed this piece of trash are full of shite. Ooooh, an overprotective father. Ohhh, a western novelist on Peyote, ohhhhhh, a chainsmoking daughter looking for something her own, ahhhhhhhhh, the movie does end. I found it pretentious, false, self aware and serious about its humor. this film would have been better off as a parody of its characters. Their quirks brought them half way there, yet, the dialogue would not allow it's inane quirks to unleash. Honestly, I've met plenty of people who enjoy this. I've found these people to be reclusive cynics who wish to make this movie their own; Each a variant of Margot, unwilling to adopt a carcinogenic habit, just a deadly boring flick. I dare anybody to watch this objectively, with their guard down, especially after reading this review, thinking, this guy is a stupid fool with the intelligence to understand tuch complex family dynamics, and say they found this humor or story intelligent. I double dare you motherfucker. Wha...

This movie was just like Wes Anderson's previous movies, "Rushmore", and "Bottle Rocket." All 3 have very good beginnings. And very good endings. However, in between, the middle is where the problem is. I think that Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson can write great beginnings, along with great endings. However, the middle for their previous 2 movies have been kind of slow. Still, I liked both those movies. I liked this one also. The performances (especially Gene Hackman) were great, and the film was beautiful to look at. The first 20 minutes and the last 10 minutes in my opinion, the best parts of the movie. The 1hr 10min between was good, but a little bit slower than the beginning and ending. But that is my only beef with the film. I laughed a lot of times, and it truly is one of thos "Love it or Hate it" type movies. Overall: A good time at the Movies (or at home watching DVDs) 8/10

It was a funny and quirky movie. I don't know if I bought the fact that so many characters in the film were that rich, intelligent, eccentric, that special. In a way they were a little too superior and above everyone else (the rest of the masses) for my tastes. I guess I had the same problem with "Forest Gump".. that Forest could excel that far in just about anything he did, and it was easy for him, I didn't buy it, but it was amusing and fun to watch. Some of the moments were really outstanding and creative, and other portions were childish. I guess I would give it an 8/10 for creativity and style. You might either love this film or hate it, but its worth checking out, just for it's originality.

I read the other posts, and I honestly cannot offer anything that would improve this post drastically, except for the percentage of the ratings! 10/10. In my opinion it is the best movie of the past year or so...memento and requiem for a dream were the other two movies I can think of that I loved in the same context. An improvement over the already fabulous Rushmore, oh just thinking about Royal Tenenbaums gets me excited...I think I'll watch it.

Thanks to the almighty Arnold Schwarzenegger and his Collateral Damage, this movie got only two showings at the local theater, which is a crime, because what I saw at the theater is one of the best comedies ever made. Being very funny and also very touching, this movie manages to give everything you've waited for after you got sick of the gross-out comedies. I can guarantee you haven't seen a movie like this before. The cast is stellar, as you've probably read from the posts above. And the script. Wow. The fact that Gosford Park won the Oscar over this and Memento proves that Academy doesn't know a thing. One thing that no reviewer before has mentioned is the most brilliantly constructed soundtrack. Starting with Hey Jude by Beatles and ending with Van Morrison's Everyone there's not a song that doesn't fit the movie perfectly. I was amazed. Go see this. Be Amazed. Be Very Amazed. 9/10

I finally got to see this yesterday.
I don't really hold with what seem to be the majority view, that The Royal Tenenbaums is a masterpiece. It's a very good film though. I thought the opening sequence was the best of the film, 'Hey Jude', a great song, was used beautifully and the jokes were brilliant. There are brilliant moments scattered through the film, Luke Wilson cutting his hair, Ritchie's final tennis match, Chas' tie rack but, perhaps because of the structure, they don't seem to connect as well as they should and I left feeling I had watched a series of sketches. The Royal Tenenbaums is full of great performances but the real surprise was Gwyneth Paltrow, I've never thought highly of her as an actress, until last night. Margot was my favourite character and Paltrow's performance was outstanding.
The rest of the cast were also fine with the exception of Ben Stiller, who I usualy like, but I failed to engage with his performance here. Wes Anderson's direction was original and often funny but ...

Gone is the boyish cynicism of Rushmore, and instead instilled within Wilson and Anderson's third feature is a sense of wonder and nostalgia. It's odd that Rusmore is the more sincere, but that's for a number of reasons. The broad scope of an extended, fractured family leads to a dishelved sense of characterisation and, as much as Anderson would love us to see this as grand familial thematics, it focuses on specific characters rather than the whole and their subsequent functions. But each character is rich and developed (minus Stiller's caricature - he's not given the time just the sap) and the trio of Hackman, Paltrow and the non-writing Wilson justify their dominant screentime. Although the understated Huston and the dishelved writing Wilson deserve more meat from the bone. An expertly intergrated soundtrack and a visual warmth elevate the film significantly.

I cannot think of the words to describe why i think this movie is so great, so I'll offer some observations. There is a scene where Danny Glover falls into a hole. This is an old joke, done many, many time before. When it is done in The Royal Tenenbaums, it seems fresh and new. Why? It is due to Anderson's quirky directing style. Whereas we would normally see the character fall into the hole, in this flick we imagine the character fall into the hole. Instead of relying on the physical comedy of the joke, Anderson decides to only show Glover fall out of frame, then he cuts to show Glover climb out of the hole.
This allows us to catch the real joke, which is that Sherman is akward. Instead of focusing on him in the hole, we focus on him.

The Rayal Tenenbaums (2001)
Written By: Wes Anderson & Owen Wilson
Directed By: Wes Anderson
Rating: R (For Language, Sexual Content, & Drug Use)
Everyone seems to say that this film is quirky. It is, but that's what makes this film so fun to watch. I love this film, and now have a desire to see it again. The Royal Tenenbaums tells a story of a dysfunctional family (kind of like a live-action "Simpsons?), brighten together when Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) comes to spend time with his family because he has six weeks to live. About an hour into the film, you find out that Royal Tenenbaum does not have a life-threatening disease, but the movie doesn?t stop there. Royal turns out to be a heart-warming character who just wants to make things right again. The film is quirky, but very well-written, smart, and downright hilarious. Many major stars, including Ben Stiller, Danny Glover, Owen & Luke Wilson, and may others, give it their best with success. I really feel this is one of...

Well, I'd say JoBlo says it best that this movie is "quirky." And I wasn't expecting it to be this quirky, but I ended up really enjoying this movie. I liked how so many of the jokes were subtle, but there were also a few laugh-out-loud jokes. I also enjoyed the sets, designs, camera angles, colors, and just how the movie looked. It really interested and intrigued me. But I think the main part of this movie has to do with the characters. Great, great, great characterization. All these mix-matched, odd-looking people from the same family worked great. Definitely an enjoyable movie all-around. 7.5/10

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS - 10/10 I'd have to say that at least to me, personally, this is one of the best movies ever made. It produced just about every emotion inside of me that I am capable of having (and that's saying a lot for me... I'm not a highly emotional person.) This film made me laugh my ass off more times than I can count, and other times it made me want to cry. I thought the scene with Richie cutting his hair was about one of the saddest moments of cinema I have ever experienced. I wanted to die right there with him... But then, fifteen seconds later, I was laughing all over again. Excellent, excellent movie. My respect for Owen Wilson has increased exponentially.

THE REVIEW as soon as i walked out of the theatre this movie officially became my favorite movie of all time (replacing "there's something about mary)! this movie is genius in everyway just like all of Wes and Owen's but just a little bit better! it is hilarious, dramatic and unlike their previous films it is extremely sad.Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson made the ideal decision to experiment with some "darker" elements of life such as depression and suicide and blended it PERFECTLY with their signature comedic style.this movie is in no way depressing though,it is actually just the opposite,it has a really good message.i found myself smiling throughout the entire movie when i wasn't laughing or holding back tears.at times,i lauged so hard i couldn't breathe and at the end of the movie i even cried.i never cry at movies but i was crying like a little pussy girl with a skinned knee.this movie affected me in a completely different way than any movie i have ever seen and that is what makes it my automa...

First off, let me give you some info on what I thought of Wes Anderson's past film. I thought Bottle Rocket was alright, but without Owen Wilson it would have sucked. And I hated Rushmore. Hated it. That being said..... I loved every second of this movie. The writing by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson(is this guy a genius, or what?) is spectacular, and the acting is just right across the board.
Gene Hackman-It's his movie. The guy gives and gives and gives and...succeeds. This is one of, if not the, best performances of his career. When he calls Glover "Coltrane" I nearly pissed myself.
Anjelica Huston-Never given center stage, but does a great job throughout the flick by being the one character who DOESN'T steal the show.
Ben Stiller-Again, he doesn't really get as much screentime as you would have expected from the trailers, but he rules anyway. It's suprising how good he can be as a character this angry.
Owen Wilson-Hilarious. Nothing more, nothing less. Knowing he probably wrote his...

PLOT: Royal Tenenbaum (Hackman) is a lying, cheating, rotten old man who smokes a lot. Royal’s children (Stiller, Paltrow, Luke Wilson) were all child protégés in the 70’s, but Royal never really paid much attention to them, so in return, they pretty much hated him. 22 years have passed and Royal wants to make up with his family. Royal fakes a terminal illness making his family believe that he is dying in 6 weeks, and along with his sidekick Pagoda (Kumar Pallana) he tries to establish a love between his family, and get his wife back (Angelica Houston) before Henry Sherman (Danny Glover) takes her away from. Did I mention this movie is fucking hilarious? REVIEW: From the creators of “Rushmore” and “Bottle Rocket” comes A truly hilarious film. Now, I wasn’t really a big fan of Rushmore, and I never even saw Bottle Rocket, but I will say that you don’t have to be a fan of either of those movies to enjoy this movie. Right from the first moment I saw the trailer, I was locked into this movie, and the release cam...

The Royal Tenenbaums 9/10... The Royal Tenenbaums is a hilarious, smart comedy with an outstanding cast. I think it is Wes Anderson's best work to date along with Rushmore. Gene Hackman is superb as Royal Tenenbaum, a lieing, scheming father who has abandoned his dysfunctional family only to come back to set things right. Like I said the cast is excellent...Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson...and other friends and acquaintences like Danny Glover, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson. This film was funny the whole way through, not laugh out loud funny, at crude humor and toilet jokes...but just constant chuckling at the quirky, absurdity of this group. There is just something funny about watching ben Stiller and his two look alike kids walk around in the same red track-suits all the time. Other favorite parts include Gene Hackman showing his grandsons how to cut loose once a while, especially teaching them how to shoplift, dash across busy streets and so on. The Royal Tenenbaums is a quirky, f...

First off, I hated Rushmore. I thought it was really stupid, so I didn't have high expectations for Royal Tenebaums. In fact, I loved it. A really funny movie. All the actors were good. It's been years since I saw Huston do anything worthwhile, but she's good here. It's not over the top like most of our present comedies, but this is one of the best comedies of the last couple of years. I give it a 8/10.

The Royal Tennenbaums
9/10 Wes Anderson has a knack for making quirky movies, that are histerically funny yet sophisticated dramas. The Royal Tennenbaums is his beset work yet, it has a compelling story of redemption and love, that is somewhat identifiable. One thing that set's The Royal Tennenbaums apart from Anderson's first two fortays is the cast, in Bottle Rocket he worked with an unknown cast (with the exception of James Caan.) Then in Rushmore he had Bill Murray. Yet this cast (which has a lot of actors from his previous two films) gets an A list of actors, Pawltrow, Stiller, Murray, Hackman, Glover The Wilson's (owen was a co-writer) and Huston. The performances are great and the casting was perfect, Pawltrow and Hackman especially. The movie has a unique look to it very similar to Anderson's other two films. It looks very British yet with retro colors and clothing, and it seems to feel cold. The settings and outfits though fit the movie perfectly, contributing to the dysfunction that exsists in ...

Finally got to see this movie after searching all over Jersey last week for a theater that was showing it. Thought it was pretty good but sometimes I felt it tried too hard. I definitely appreciate Anderson's style. The man's got a visual knack you can't deny. So yeah, yea, yea - the movie was great. But c'mon are we all forgetting? Gwyneth looking hot as ever tongue kissing and feeling up some naked chick! Made the whole movie for me! [This message has been edited by Joey Baloney (edited 01-07-2002).]

The Royal Tenenbaums is by far the quirkiest film of 2001. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson have managed to create a hilarious yet moving film about a very dysfunctional family. The Tenenbaum children were geniuses, Chas (Ben Stiller) has been making money on the stockmarket and in the real estate business since the age of 14. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow), the adopted child who was an award winning playwright, and Richie (Luke Wilson), a champion tennis player. Gene Hackman stars as Royal Tenenbaum, the patriarch of the Tenenbaum's who has been estranged from his family for quite a few years. Now broke and evicted from his hotel room, he fakes that he is dying of stomach cancer in order to win back his family. The film follows how the Tenenbaum's through this incident come together, well somewhat as a family. The direction is fantastic!!!! I loved how the film was broke up into chapters. The score was whimsical and very appropriate. The film's art direction and costume design were highly original, the film felt like...

First of all Whitemat, Murray had one funny part(or at least i think so)-When the spy guy told him all about Margot's affairs and that she smokes and all he cared about and said was"She smokes!". Anyway, I saw it xmas eve so i may not be exact. I loved the feel of the movie and the colors and all. The cinemetography, the acting, the directing. Good cast and a GREAT movie. Funny like Rushmore which i saw after seeing this and for some reason i ahted Rushmore the first time and loved it the second time. There were a few questions i had during the movie though(i.e.-why did ben stiller suddenly move into his mom's house?Him getting locked out doesnt make it for me. Why wouldnt the reaosn just be that Royale's dying?)Paltrow was hot. Luke Wilson, Gene Hackman, Ben Stiller, and Kumar were all great. I think they could have focused on the Gene Hackman trying to set things right story more because at one point only Richie's love for Margot was too important. Also Eli Cash crashing into Buckley-what was up ...

I loved just about everything about this movie. The witty humor, the great cast and most of all Gene Hackman. He kicked ass in this movie. I also liked the Wilson brothers performances. I didnt understand why they even had Bill Murray in this movie though. None of his scenes were funny and they kinda took away from the goodness of the movie. This movie was also very well written and well directed. I love Wes Anderson's style, how he kinda makes it a comedy and a drama. I refer to it as dramedy. You laugh your ass off and you care about the characters. I recommend it to everybody. 9/10
