Not to mention that they even left the end open for a sequel in a not so visible way. The majority of film goer's really enjoyed this movie, most of the "movie buffs's" disliked it. | | Static Link |

"The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (2003) Plot: When the world is in danger, a team of unique people (actually, characters I loved but were turned shit) are summoned to try and stop it . . . that's fucking it. What I Thought: "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" Whew . . . only reading/typing the title is a huge bore, I think that will settle this review perfectly. I was expecting a round zero only by looking at the trailer and when I finally let myself see it, I have to say I got nothing, not even a dissapointment. Not a good way to start my weekend . . . puke! I will start off with the thin 'I liked's' of the movie. This movie had very few things I could give to it. As you probably know, this one is based on a graphic novel (comic) and it really shows, so if you crave cartoonish and over decorated vehicles and gadgets (which I didn't buy by the way . . . what the fuck's with the 'exploration pod'?) you might get some of that candy here. The flick also ... | | Read Entire Entry |
| Posted by: jeo4 at January 8, 2004, 10:02 am | | Topic: Reviews: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Forum: JoBlo | | THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN is one of those films I have to be in the mood to watch. While not the critical disaster everyone has made it out to be, it wasn't fantastic, either. If you're in the mood for an afternoon popcorn flick, this is the film for you. Lots of cheese, obscene special effects (some of which are rather flat), and a cast that turns an unhealthy script into at least a decent performance (Sean Connery, Stuart Townshend, Peta Wilson). This film is not to be taken seriously, and that's certainly evident. However, don't push it aside if you're looking for something to occupy your time. It makes for fun viewing when taken for the popcorn flick it is. 6/10 | | Static Link |

But then, I rented the DVD, so I didn't waste my time standing in line at the theater. The movie was stupid in many areas. For example, the huge-a$$ submarine navigating it's way through the canals of Venice. Ha. Also, the car chase in Venice. Ha, Ha. I didn't like the Hyde character. He was too Hulk-like for me. I liked the La Femme vampire babe. She looked good. I truly believe that Sean Connery does not know how to read a script. Otherwise, he would not accept so many lame roles. I think he's a great actor, but he usually plays in crappy movies. I say...5.5/10 | | Static Link |

I wish I would have believed some of the people that said this movie was really boring, but instead, I listened to the few people that said it was really fun if you leave your brain at the door. After seeing it, I can’t imagine what the people that said it was really fun were smoking. I can’t believe how hard it was to endure this movie. If you would have asked me at the 45 minute mark what was going on in the movie, the best answer I could have given would have been “They’re going somewhere to do something.” I checked a few times during the movie to see how much time was left, and after checking again at around the 45 minute mark and seeing that it still had an hour or better left, I decided to just fast forward through it. This rarely happens to me. Usually, no matter how bored I am, I like to watch a movie all the way through. But with this one, I just couldn’t take anymore. I wanted the p... | | Read Entire Entry |

And I must say, The League is every bit as cheesy and shallow as it's made out to be. But it is not the worst film in the world. My vote for that little treasure still goes to The Fast and the Furious. I hate you, Paul Walker. Ahem. Firstly, obviously, these gentlemen are not extraordinary. Anybody who's actually read the books these characters came from (evidently the scriptwriters haven't) will find their heads spinning. For instance, Mr. Hyde is in fact small than Jekyll, and now he's quite simply the Incredible Hulk. And also devoid of his supposed boundless capacity for evil. Sort of defeats the point of being "Jekyll's other side," doesn't it. Dorian Gray, tagged on to the original comic-line up (I haven't read it), is amusing enough, but feels too unimportant and fleeting. Mina Harker is a good vampire (following on from the "v... | | Read Entire Entry |

I think it was the characters I liked the most. They were pretty damn interesting to listen to and the corny lines gave it a old comic book feel that I enjoyed a lot. Other than that there was nothing else that I really liked about it, I just liked it for some odd reason. Certain movies go well with certain people I guess, and LXG went well with me. What worked: -The cast and characters. Connery, Townsend, Flemyng, Curran, Roxburgh, and Wilson were noteworthy in their roles, and turned in very good performances. West, and Shah weren't as successful in theirs, but were good enough with what they were given. Wilson and Curran could've benefitted greatly with some extra screentime, since I had some unanswered questions with Mina Harker, and wanted to see more of The Invisible Man. I don't have many complaints with the characters and performances, even though Shane West stuck out like a sore thumb sometimes. -The action. Sure, there was a lot of fast cutting that didn't always make it comprehensible, but I had no qualms with it, and was having a good time with it, especially the library scene. -Most of the special effects. There were some bad ones, like most summer movies, but the effects for Jekyll and TIM were well done. -The lightheartedness. Despite so... | | Read Entire Entry |

| Posted by: YodaMokona at July 21, 2003, 12:35 am | | Topic: Reviews: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Forum: JoBlo | | This movie can be summed up as a super idea that went horribly, horribly wrong. I can't put my finger on what exactly is wrong with this film, but wow-fix it stat! Sean Connery was quite good, Stuart Townsend was quite good, and Peta Wilson was a lot of fun. The plot is based on a wonderfully innovative graphic novel, but in spite of all the things this project had going for it, it falls far short. The characters never really seem to mesh (and could Nemo have been anymore of a stereotype?), the special effects are anything but special (Mr. Hyde-hello, could you have possibly done a worse job on the f/x shots here?), and the main set piece of the film (the ship Nautilus) is so horrible looking that people in the theater were actually laughing. Not a good sign, people. If you're in the mood for a good comic book movie, just about anything else ever made is better than this...and that really is a shame. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Doc Holliday at July 13, 2003, 9:18 am | | Topic: Reviews: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Forum: JoBlo | | I love Sean Connery. Absolutley love the man. He is the personification of a kick ass actor in my books. But i hated him here. He just didn't fit, and the movie itself fell flat on so many levels for me. The acting overall was well, sloppy to me. I really didn't get into any character except Captain Nemo and at point Hyde. The rest menat nothing to me, and I though were develpoed poorly. The editing is what really killed me. It looked sloppy and rushed. The CGI was rotten, only Hyde looked good, the rest was crap. I'll not spend anymore time telling you how much I didn't like this movie (oh yeah Shane West was awful, too many cliches). Before I go ***spoilers*** The whole Tom Sawyer, Alan Quartermain relationship, where Sawyer became like a surrogate son to him was pulled off horribly. I sat there thinking I feel nothing between them. Bad writing. ***end spoiler*** My grade, not as bad as Daredevil 2/10, but damn close 3.5/10 | | Static Link |

Shane West as Tom Sawyer i liked the cockiness of the now U.S secret agent but i also loved the bonding between him and Conne... | | Read Entire Entry |

Hakari at July 12, 2003, 5:25 pm | | Topic: Reviews: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Forum: JoBlo | | I saw LXG yesterday afternoon, and although I can understand why the naysayers are hating this movie so much, I loved the hell out of it. I loved the lapses in logic, the sometimes corny effects, the overly dramatic lines ("That's the smell of treachery!")...I had a ball with this flick. LXG consistently displayed its imagination concerning the effects, not just throwing some stuff out there but putting some thought into what the budget was spent on. That, and being a literature buff long before I turned to movies, it was cool seeing all of these literary greats gather together to just kick ass. LXG gave me a headache, and I'm thankful for it. Not a perfect summer picture (I would rather see the more intelligent and entertaining T3) again, but LXG is certainly above-average stuff for this season. ***/**** or 7/10 | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Negrotigre at July 12, 2003, 4:47 pm | | Topic: Reviews: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Forum: JoBlo | | I'd be hard pressed to find a bigger waste of time than seeing this movie. This movie lacks any cohesion, watching senior citizen Connery beat up groups of young armored soldiers was nearly as bad as the collective aim of the villians. I know bad guys can't shoot, but damn! I would have rather seen an updated Jekyll and Hide movie than see that character wasted in this smorgasborg of un-entertainment. Did someone really write this, or was it all improve? Shhh, the writing was dreadful, the dialogue atrocious, and the attempt at sentimentality never set in. How much did they spend on this cgi mess? I hope it doesn't make its money back, and they in turn make a sequel. It would take more than a legion of heroes to save us from such a collossal calamity. If it weren't for my date who's idea it was to see this movie, I would have walked out. I was rooting for the movie to end. 3.5/10 | | Static Link |

Fun and cheesy, not the most deep super hero story, but a fun one, indeed. Something I forgot to mention in my Current Movie Talk review, the theater was fucking packed! I had to set on the 2nd row! Maybe it won't flop. But I'm sure it'll do good this weekend, then just kinda fall out. Which is a pity, because it's actually a fun movie-going experience. 6.5, perhaps a 7/10 | | Static Link |

THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS! There is a few things that I dont get. One, how many times do the good guys turn out to be bad guys in a movie. This one can't just do it once they got to do it twice and one of them, Dorian Gray, is the best charater in the whole movie I thought. Then there was Connery do his I wish I was still bond acting. All the others were just fine but they should have used more of Skinner in this movie he's gone for like a half-hour. And how did he figure out it was Gray. I totaly would have guessed Skinner. Plus the Venice Scene, I'll say this once and only once, THERE ARE NO STREETS IN VENICE!!!!! That whole car scence was impossible. I did like the CGI on Mr. Hyde. Overall you should go see Pirates of the Caribbean over this. Lets pray they do a better sequel (if there ever is one). Seriously I don't really know why Sean Connery was picked for this part, anyone else could have played it, even, better!! Isn't it time for him to retire? or stick to movies like FIDDING FORESTER. The story was of course based on a comic book, so it's practically like all comics, some masked and mysterious guy wants to rule over the world. Then we find out there is a traitor and the masked guy is in fact someone from the organization who wants to take something from the heroes. Even though the story about the characters was well enough built, I did find some facts that don't really correspond to the literary version of the character... -Mr. Hyde is actually an evil normal man not a monster -Nemo is French not Pakistani ...and some mo... | | Read Entire Entry |
| Posted by: MovieMan75 at July 11, 2003, 5:56 pm | | Topic: Reviews: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Forum: JoBlo | | I'm fully with JoBlo on this one. A give the film credit for being innovative, original, and with a creative initial idea, but other than that, there's nothing else here. The plot was boring, the action sequences were totally generic, and not one character did anything for me. (We're even supposed to believe some hokey subplots about relationships.) The worst thing about it is that the film had so much potential. But then every thing got mucked up in a God-awful scrreenplay. I also hated the CGI. (Mr. Hyde was dreadful.) In the end, I didn't care at all about any of the characters, I didn't care about the story, and I wasn't excited or entertained at all during the entire time. It would have been so much better if they had made it more goofily spectacular, and realized their place. This could have been an excellent, over-the-top adventure movie with a sense of parody, but instead we're left completely empty and not entertained in the least. My Rating: 5/10 | | Static Link |
