It's neck-and-neck right with The Silence Of The Lambs for that accolade. This is simply superb filmmaking. And this is also Michael Mann's most mature film to date and also his best film since Thief(1981), my favorite movie ever(<--see my profile). The directing, the acting, and especially the writing make this a true cinematic masterpiece. The dialogue is in a large part journalese and very convincing I might add. Christopher Plummer as Mike Wallace is priceless and the scene where he argues with Gina Gershon is the best of its kind since Jack Nicholson's famous "toast" scene in Five Easy Pieces. Sorry, I know, wild tangent there. I simply love this movie. Every detail is impeccably placed. I don't even like Russell Crowe all that much, but in this movie he truly meshes. Pacino is fucking terrific; and he hadn't really done anything to impress me in years. Stylistically, Michael Mann is the coolest director on the planet and on this one he... | | Read Entire Entry |

The big flaw of the film is that it is too long, draggy in segments, and in need of some editing, and this waters down the big implications of the film - that the tobacco industry puts cancer causing agents into cigarettes! If you concentrate on the flawed hero, Jeffrey Wigand, played masterly by Russell Crowe you have a good character study. I liked that though a genius scientist he had many personal and emotional demons and I felt much sympathy for him. However, director Mann made Al Pacino, as 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman, the focus and hero of the film instead of Wigand, when in fact Wigand should of been made the focus. The screenplay and music too lofty at times and didn't mesh with the technical storyline. I feel that this film had the potential to be very good to excellent if some deft editing was executed. | | Static Link |

Crowe was absolutely amazing and deserved the oscar. More so than he did for Gladiator. Great cinematography and great screenplay and great directing is what this movie is made of. I give it a 9/10. It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Even for a slow-moving drama! If I had seen this movie in theaters I would have had to take a bottle of caffeine pills. I tried and tried to watch it, but couldn't pull it off after 3 attempts. Maybe I just hate Russell Crow, or just slow-moving movies. But damn, what a piece of shit! The characters were poorly developed, the plot was uninteresting, and it was doo damn long. I wouldn't recommend this movie to my worst enemy's dog! | | Static Link |

<11/20/99> Good Docudrama. I'll be brief: ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN it is not, but THE INSIDER is certainly a fine attempt that's as close as any big-budget commercial Hollywood release is likely to get in these days of unforsaken unduly graphic, formulaic, impersonal and overblown mega blockbusters. 8/10 | | Static Link |

Michael Mann managed to create the most absorbing and important film of 1999, and that was The Insider. Russell Crowe was amazing in this film. He deserved an Oscar for this. Everything about this film is great. The acting, the direction, the screenplay, the photography, the editing and the content. Alot of work went into this film and it could all be seen up on the screen. It's truly a work of art. 10/10....It was The Best Movie of 1999 | | Static Link |
