I think it's probably one of the better teen romances. That said I was mystified when EW picked it as the #1 Romance of the Modern Era. Don't get me wrong there is much to admire about the film. John Cusak gives a winning performance as Lloyd Dobler the misfit who hasn't a clue what he wants to do, very little ambition or goal direction. And his romance with Ione Skye's Diana is utterly charming. The way they came from totally different worlds and yet connected at some deeper level that went beyond intelligence and his world and her world was beautiful.
And John Mahoney's creepy dad is worth the price of a rental alone. Not to mention a knowing, warm script that expresses respect not contempt for it's characters. Plus one of the great movie songs no not In Your Eyes I'm talking the song of the movie Joe Lies. (That scene alone is worth seeing the movie. Lili Taylor rocks!) But I think on the whole this film is good but not great. And certainly not the num... | | Read Entire Entry |

I've been a fan of Cameron Crowe's for a long time and this film contains some of the best dialogue he has written 'I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen' gets me every time. The performances are excellent from the entire cast but those of John Cusack and Ione Skye really stand out, Cusack comes across as the perfect everyman and makes Lloyd easy to like and easy to identify with. I also love Ione Skye's character, Diane Court, the characters are well written enough for you to not only want Lloyd to end up with her but to really understand why he wants to. The film is packed with memorable moments; The 'In Your Eyes' scene, Lilli Taylor singing all the songs she's written about her boyfriend, among others. It shows that this is Crowe's first film as director but the story is such that he does not need to use any flashy camera or editing tricks meaning that his inexperience behind the camera is no hinderance and he is able to concentrate on getting a great cast to deliver his... | | Read Entire Entry |

Came across this movie a few months back, and I absolutely loved it. Indeed, a young Jerry Maguire, I see how Crowe has matured. It has the predictability of other past teen movies, but the writing sets this apart from the others. I gotta say, that ending was very interesting. They are waiting for the seatbelt light to come on, and they are waiting, waiting, then it blacks out right as you hear, "DING!". **** out of five. | | Static Link |

I was never into John Hughes' teen angst movies (although his non-teen "Planes, Trains, & Automobiles" is one of the greats) so I was quite impressed with "Say Anything..." Like you said, Jo, it's a very mature film, and can be appreciated after "adults-as-bad-guys" movies like "The Breakfast Club" start showing their age. Thanks for reminding me to take another look at this one. | | Static Link |

Also really like that song from Peter Gabriel. Cameron Crowe and John Hughes teen flicks of the 80's put some of the garbage of today to shame. | | Static Link |

I wonder what made me want to see Cameron Crowe's first film this week of all weeks? A celebrated "teen" film, which is probably more mature and adult then people might think, I enjoyed this film but didn't see it as the "brilliant" piece that others have proclaimed. Great dialogue, dead-on performances from all three leads, Cusack, Skye and Mahoney, a nice romance, cool soundtrack and some funny lines. Granted, the film did take me back to that "time and place" in my own life, but I think it's probably geared more towards those who still don't know what they want out of their lives. A young JERRY MAGUIRE...? And BTW, what ever happened to Ione Skye...? She was pretty good in this. Stars John Cusack, Ione Skye, John Mahoney | | Static Link |
