I thought this was a good movie. The acting was great, the CGI was great IMO, and just everything about it was great. The only problem I had with this movie was the end, it was just way to abrupt and to much of a cliffhanger for me. Other than that, it was a great movie that I will enjoy watching again. This movie is absolutely perfect. But one has to like this type of genre to begin with to have this opinion. For people who don't, this film can seem quite slow and boring. For me, this film is the start of the perfect fantasy. Peter Jackson and his team have done a wonderful job at bringing the world of Tolkien to life. I went into this film not knowing much about The Lord of the Rings. I had heard of Bilbo, Frodo, Gollum, Gandalf, and the ring. I knew the ring makes you invisible. But aside from that, I knew nothing. So it was all a new experience for me when I first saw this part of the trilogy. I was totally amazed at how great it was. I had never seen anything like it. The story was touching, and it had a sense of wonder to it with all the new fantasy locations we were taken to, such as Hobbiton, Mordor, Rivendale, Moria, Lothlorien, etc. I felt like we were uncovering a long lost past.... | | Read Entire Entry |

Having been bored by Tolkiens books and unable to read stories for what I had heared were AMAZING, I was glad that Peter Jackson was finally doing a movie. I figured, eh', i'll rent it on video. But one day, when another movie was sold out, I chose Fellowship. What can I say except, WHAT A PERFECT MODERN DAY EPIC. This film has it all, gorgeous scenary, exelent action, a wonderful set, and most of all, great writing and direction by Peter Jackson whom co-wrote this film with 3 others. The script is utter brilliance and there are no flaws in this movie, or in the Two Towers. The characters were perfectly developed and I'm also one of those people who don't care for sword fights. They always seem staged, and they bore me easily. This movie had sword fights and I loved them! It is a bit lengthy, but the length is needed to tell this huge tale, and it's something they couldn't help. I also liked how it kept you on the edge of your seat. It was surprisingly suspenseful and the visual effects were AMAZING! Overall it was a glorious film that was a bit lengthy and slow at times, but that didn't hurt it much. In fact, I hate most films of the genre. But Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship does not disappoint! Everything was top notch: Dialogue, script, cinematography, story, etc. The characters were very well developed and the actors play their characters down to the bone. The two performances that stood out to the most were those of Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf). The excellent Sir Ian McKellen gives one of his best performances to date, the second best male supporting performance of 2001. And as for Elijah Wood, the former child actor who shined movies such as Paradies, Radio Flyer, and The Ice Storm is absolutely perfect as the role of Frodo. Yes, the facial expressions are very real and you can feel that when you see him 'act', it won't even feel like acting. The dude IS Frodo. The whole movie is one big journey. Well I would have to say that I absolutely love this movie. I have always been a fan of fantasy books, games, and movies so when I heard they were making Lord of the Rings trilogy I was already in line. I also had not even read the books the first time I saw this movie but I was still able to keep up knowing some of the back story and they included a prologue anyways. They took every awesome experience from the book and kept it pretty close while managing to include all of the killer(nearly) and none of the filler that would have made it longer and boring. The amount of time and passion dedicated to this project is unbelievable and they took every aspect of middle earth into consideration. All the actors manage to do their characters justice and the special effects are through the roof. You can really feel the terror as the ringwraiths approach. The action scenes are incredibly intense as well. My favorite scenes of the movie are Balin's tomb in ... | | Read Entire Entry |

Popularity is often a false alarm - look at the Fast and the Furious. But here's a movie that surpasses all expectations, stuns and pleases in equal quantities, and finishes leaving audiences with mouths gaping, enfuriated that they have to wait for more. I remember seeing "Directed by Peter Jackson" come up. I was furious... yet absolutely commited to coming back a year later. Just to dispel a popular myth, the movie is NOT a collection of special effects. It may contain a lot, but they're never put to lazy use, never pointless. From the Mines of Moria to Rivendell, this is one good looking movie, and deservedly so. Backed up with Tolkein's immortal books, the story is first rate, and the characters are fascinating (if generally depthless at this stage of the trilogy). The performances are first rate (Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood get my votes here, Viggo Mortisen not really stealing the stage until The Two Towers... | | Read Entire Entry |

It was beyond anything I could ever conceive. Simply, Wow! I was very worried about seeing this movie due to my dislike for Elijah Wood. All that was put to rest once the movie began. From there I was literally blown away. The script was solid, the cast was excellent and the special effects just left me in awe. I did know anything about this movie until a friend of mine introduced me to it only weeks before. Now I'm in eager anticipation for the next installment of the series. Undeniably the best movie of all time for me. The mere thought of Russel Crowe's "A beautiful mind" winning best picture of the year over LOTR is a JOKE but that's another movie review altogether. The hype for the film was incredible. Although I did not want to be influenced by it, its grasp was impossible to avoid. No matter how big the hype, my initial disappointment of the film was not a result of it; the reason of my disappointment was actually because of my attempts to avoid any information about it. The movie did not really seem that complex. It is about the journey of a hobbit, a small and jolly creature, which has the giant responsibility of returning the "One Ring" through the Mountains and Hills and Caves and Trolls and Orcs and Demons. Its message is clear: through the story of the small hobbit and its quest, I felt that Tolkien was probably trying to relay a message to us as well. If that small creature was able to assume his quest, we should be able to listen for our own calling in life and act on it as well. The Fellowship Of The Ring is absolutely a triumph of film. Simply put - No film comes close to it's greatness.
I don't mean that this is the greatest film ever made, but it's such a stand-alone achievement that it should surely be heralded for it in it's own way. Everything was top-notch and pitch-perfect. This movie was great. The sets were real. The CGI was well-done. And the movie overall was interesting and mostly believable. This series was designed to be one of those over-the-top stories that people will still be talking about 20+ years from now. It's not your basic throw-away movie like any other. Even if you haven't much interest in fantasy, you can get a little bit of something out of this movie. Most of it is built around fantasy, but there's PLENTY of action, pretty creepy horror w/monster a-million, and comic relief (intelligent comedy, mostly on behalf of the slow-witted 'Sam'). It also put in a whole load full of more emotional stimuli. I think the movie is a perfect movie for THIS book. If you guys who haven't read the book think this movie was long...I keep on thinking of all the 70+hours they could have added! This is a perfect summary of the book. I did not think it was long at all compared of what it "could have been." People have to remember it was based on a very detailed oriented book full of every little thing that happened to Frodo, like a HISTORY LESSON. It was meant to be long and the movie needed to be a lot longer than the average to reflect this. By the way, THE MOVIE WAS GREAT. | | Static Link |

I have seen this movie twice now and am just totally blown away by it. It now goes to the top of my list of favorite movies of all time!
I dont know much about the books but I would say PJ did an excellent job with the material. You have to remember PJ had to make a movie that appeals to the average movie-goer not just die-hard Tolkien fans!. PJ put his career on the line by making this classic, having shared the burden of 300+ million with New Line on a gamble that must pay off!. Im sure New Line pretty much gave PJ free reign with making this movie, but Im also certain they gave him a few guidelines to bide by, like making the material more appealing to the general public, lets face it, theirs too much money on the line to risk making a word for word adaption of a film to please LOTR purists!.
This by far is the most advanced fantasy movie ever made. It is just a relief to see that the director and crew made a fantasy movie so real and serious it does'nt come off as being "campy"... | | Read Entire Entry |

We only have to look at Chris Columbous' adaptation of Harry Potter to realise that literature cannot be directly transplanted to film primarilly due to the fact that it very often prohibbits interpretation and artistic licence. Without Peter Jackson's selective nature, TLOTR may have lasted 5 hours due to Tolkiens dense and descriptive narrative. TLOTR is truly a monumental achievement in film-making. I have seen this film twice upon writing this and fully intend to go and see it again. Having read the books I was a little uneasy about the impending film release, however my fears were immediately dispelled as I sat back to enjoy one of the best cinema experiences of my life. Not only does the film manage to stunningly recreate middle-earth through a combination of wonderful set designs and magnificent CGI it also succeeds in conveying th... | | Read Entire Entry |

I went into the film with a lot of hopes because of all of the hype and i wasn't disappointed. The film for me is one of the best this year and helped the sag that this year so far has had with rubbish like Pearl Harbour and Tomb Raider. The acting was great all around especially Ian McKellen, the direction was excellent and the CGI was better than most have been up to now. The other thing i liked about the CGI was that it , other than being very realistic, didn't use special effects just for the sack of having CGI like I felt the Mummy Returns did they where used when needed. The length of the film didn't bother me and considering the film has to cram 2 books into 1 film (as the Fellowship is split into 2 books) it was well done and kept me riveted throughout. I followed the story of the film with ease and nothing confused me and the whole feel was very dark especially the dark lord along with the Orcs ... | | Read Entire Entry |

I walked out with a mixture of fatigue and disappointment. I agree this is a very good, exciting, film but the best of 2001 not for me. I have to say I think the film will work better for me on DVD. I felt it dragged in spots and as others have mentioned there are instances of repetition throughout the film. But as much as I thought the time was overdone, I think what was missing for much of the film was a sense of involvement. These characters were risking their lives and yet I never felt drawn in or at all involved. And I think the director milked so much audience reaction out by using the soundtrack to milk reactions out of the audience. I liked Wood, McKellen, Blanchett and others but I felt no real connection to them as characters. Perhaps reading the book might be more necessary than I thought. On the plus side I thin... | | Read Entire Entry |
| Posted by: Snowboy at December 27, 2001, 5:21 pm | | Topic: Reviews: The Fellowship of the Ring Forum: JoBlo | | Well after waiting a year for its release, I must say I was not at all disappointed. It is a beautifully created film with great characters, a beautiful score, lots of passion and emotion, and a good time at the movies. The special effects were also quite good, but at times I thought there was too much, but for what its worth, I really liked them. Elijah Wood gave a super performance as young Frodo, and the relationship between Frodo and Sam was rather touching. But Ian McKellan really took the gold here. Not only did he LOOK the part, he played it with such a passion and intensity, and his blue eyes could preach a sermon without saying a word. I would have liked to see more of Liv Tyler, whose celestial presence did seem a little odd, but nonetheless, she was beautiful. When she spoke in Elvish, I was in love All in all, 8/10, and a really enjoyable time at the movies. One of the only films actually worth my $7. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: pi at December 26, 2001, 5:25 am | | Topic: Reviews: The Fellowship of the Ring Forum: JoBlo | | Fresh out of the theatre – these are my thoughts: I read the books 20 years ago and reread them last summer in anticipation of the release of “The Fellowship of the Ring”. I intended to only reread the first book but I’ve read some of the reviews here and I understand the complaints concerning Arwen and Galadriel’s roles in the film but I think the alterations are called for because the books really do have these heroine characters – Tolkien just wasn’t really great at developing his heroine’s stories. I didn’t expect the film to mirror the book exactly and I haven’t heard any complaints about Tom Bombadil not showing up and I do have a few minor complaints of my own but the film was so overwhelmingly superb (for me) that I am too humbled to even mention them. The characters and the details in them were more than I could have ever hoped for and this is the real power of this film. It’s true that a Lord of the Rings film could not have been made satisfactorily without the technology available today because co... | | Read Entire Entry |

Giving Arwen more screentime was pointless. Jackson upset some of the books fans just for giving her like a few more minutes of screen time. I didn't even give a damn about ehr by the end of the movie. Also he made a good choice form cutting out the Tom Bombadil stuff because most of the audience would walk out after hearing that jolly man sing. Also, i though Wood was actually a good actor to play Frodo. The acting was pretty good too. That Orc that samuran made looked like mel gibson in Bravehart(and was that in the book). Jackson made a good job keeping the movie exciting(except that bridge thing cause it wasnt that original and i wasnt too excited) He did a pretty good job not wasting time. Merry and Pippin though didn't really seem like Frodo's friend in the movie and they jsut tagged a long for no reason. Also that fire guy with the whips i forgot his name at the moment was he described of having horns in the book? Oh yeah i also wi... | | Read Entire Entry |
