Fight Club is one of the greatest movies of ALL time. I use the word GREAT for more than one reason. It's got a lot of different features which other movies have but with much more meaning and purpose behind it. The movie obviously exagerrates a certain level of psychosis but if you break down the situation to general, real-life situations, it's something many of us have gone through. Jack represents the guy that most of us are. He's an average, hard-working, honest man whose going through a little more than a mid-life crisis. His self-esteem is hovering at the bottom pushing him over the edge and driving him to both a careless and sometimes malicious attitude. He is looking at life in a different way as the things which had once made him happy no longer work. He now feeds off of other people's misery and misfortune in order to feel better about his own situation. Marla ... | | Read Entire Entry |

I was not a movie buff either, and just saw movies for the hell of it. I re-discovered this movie just a week ago, when I bought it for the hell of it at my last trip to Best Buy. What I discovered on the 2nd viewing, while forgetting everything I saw in 1999, was that this movie packed a powerful punch only a few movies have held. This is one of those rare movies that I didn't look at the DVD clock to see how far I was in the movie. The movie has a message, that only a few films can hold. Fight Club, while having a steep running time, does not make you want to look away from the screen. It is not boring in any way, and has little plot holes that I can find. This movie is also one of the most quotable movies around. The fact that it is mostly a MAN movie, I can joke around about it with my friends alot. The movie has great directing, great dialogue, and last but not least, fantastic acting. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are flawless in this film, and I... | | Read Entire Entry |

It combines dark humor, violence, brilliant visuals and character development, throws you for a loop and leaves you with a need to see it a second time. The story is genius. Throughout the film, you are thrown hints about the ending, watch a man slip slowly into chaos, an akward romance blossom, and see some of the most brutal realistic fights ever. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton do their parts flawlessly. I loved the little information bits, and the memorable scenes. The ending was. . .wow. When all is said and done, this is a film that toys with your mind, makes you squirm, makes you laugh, and leaves you in awe. Well done. Very well done. 8/10 | | Static Link |

Fight club is the perfect Man-Movie(tm). Action, gore, sex, and philosophy- Wait, philosophy? For those who can see underneath the obvious overtones, this movie truly is the defining work for men of this era. This movie changed my life, and the lives of many of my friends. It also does have enough solidity and skin to attract the ladies. The great tragedy lies in that section of the audience that can't see past the violence at all and merely assume this movie is juvenile and excessive. If you can see what lies in the heart of this movie, you might walk away rethinking your life. If you can't, you'll probably want to walk away before it's over. 10/10 (5/5 stars) | | Static Link |

I have never experienced a movie yet that has as much power as this. Anyone calling this movie 'facist' obviously didn't watch it, for Fight Club shows that anything can be taken one level too high. Character-wise, this film has some of the coolest in cinema history. Add a notch for absolutely phenominal acting (brad pitt pulls off a performance that should've gotten him an oscar, and edward norton, well . . . he's always good) that takes this film to a whole new level. Every actor is almost painfully charismatic, and it probably helps that all absolutely love this film. So do I. " First rule of fight club: You do NOT talk about fight club!" And how could you? Rarely does a film completely overshadow the novel it was based on, but Fight Club is just that kind of a movie. Its wonderful preformances, genius directing, and well, lets all give a big hand to Jim Uhls. This man should be required to write every book-to-film adaption for the rest of his lifetime, because he just did a fantastic job. The man Chuck himself has even come out and said that he's almost ashamed of his own work when viewed alongside this virtuoso piece of modern filmmaking. Kudos to all those involved. The dark atmosphere is only complimented by the awesome acting of Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. Though to some the movie is about two guys who start a fighting league, its really not. Their relationship on-screen is visceral and exciting. I identify with Ed Norton's character because, well, he's just a more twisted version of me! Well I'm probably nothing like 'The Narrator' but for some reason I sensed some similarities - especially having this Brad Pitt-ideal of who I would want to be and how I would want to look. Isn't it great when surrounded by sequels, TV-remake travesties and big budget messes like Star Wars, you suddenly meet a movie that surprises you. Hardly any films do it these days. Tarantino certainly had the knack, messing with narratives (and audience brains) in Pulp Fiction. And, it seems, the team behind Fight Club had it too. I liked Edward Norton from the moment I saw the "Bland except for Edward Norton" Primal Fear. Here, he gives one of my favourite narrations ever (dropping tons of hints at the film's astounding twist ending, that you'll likely pick up second or third time through... yes, you will end up watching it repeatedly), and plays off the liberal and funny Brad Pitt perfectly. They're quite the double act here, throwing "why didn't I think of that" philosophies at the audience throughout. This was a movie that I noramlly would not have picked up as it has a very misleading name and I have very little patience for movies that are just violence, but I'm sure glad that I did. The amazing plot and masterful connection to the book was genius on the part of Fincher who has done no bad movies yet. The stylized way of filming made the movie dark and deep, just like the plot, and the end although unexpected, left me gaping and speechless for along time, and then had me talking non-stop about it for hours afterwards. All in all a tribute to the book, and one amazing movie that I want to see over and over again. 10/10 | | Static Link |

He has no life: he has a dead-end job, he orders IKEA furniture mail-order, and he becomes addicted to self-help groups. But Marla Singer (Helena Bohnam Carter) also goes to his groups, and the Narrator's condo gets burned down. And then he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). Tyler sells soap. And so the Narrator moves in with Tyler, and they soon find out that they have masochistic pleasures and start a "Fight Club". Every Saturday night people can pummel each other for fun. And the Narrator's life turns topsy-turvey. Lotsa fights, action scenes, dark humor, and awesome acting. Norton was exceptional as the Narrator. He really brought out the dullness of the character he was trying to show. Great job. Pitt was good but nothing to write home about. Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter are a phenomenal cast!! The story is Edward Norton is deeply depressed and has insomnia. He goes to Cancer and Disease support groups to get comfort from this and he soon meets Marla Signer played by Helena Bonham Carter. On a business flight he meets Tyler Durden who is played by Brad Pitt. Tyler makes soap and has very interesting view of life. Edwards apartment gets blown up. He gets in touch with Tyler to have a place to stay and thats when everything goes crazy. I absolutely love this film!!! 10/10/10 [This message has been edited by rockerbaby604 (edited 08-19-2002).] | | Static Link |
| Posted by: milo at June 14, 2002, 5:55 am | | Topic: Reviews: Fight Club Forum: JoBlo | this movie is really the goods. a genuine mainstream cult film that delivers in every way and in itself has kickstarted a whole new genre known as the "malienation" flic. actually i invented that term but i think its a perfect way of describing fight club.
many have called this film a sort of gen-x clockwork orange but in reality its ( not so)mock celebration of machismo and alienation aligns it more to the sam peckinpah masterpeices " the wild bunch" and " straw dogs" ; sort of their postmodern equivalents. and just too add this is one of the few films that does,nt end or go downhill after the "twist" has been revealed. do see it 10/10 | | Static Link |
