this was an awesome movie. definitely not what i was expecting. i expected to loathe this film, because i hated the english patient, but the human drama and the action were expertly intertwined in this film. rene zelleweger definitely deserved an oscar for her role in this film and nicole and jude were great also. it was great to see brendan gleeson in this film too. the ending was bleak but uplifting. definitely one of my favorite films i have seen lately. 10/10 ciao drdash

COLD MOUNTAIN (2003) THE GOOD: --There are so many good actors in this film. Other than the main three stars – Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Renee Zellweger – the film is jam-packed with appearances by other respectable celebrities each given an interesting role, usually as an intervening obstacle in Law’s migration or as someone he has to help. Law himself is terrific in his role, his accent tweaked to perfection and his eyes and tone of voice doing a lot of the acting for him. Zellweger is infused with a vibrant energy and given such a joyful and constantly entertaining character – she’s terrific, and completely irresistible. Kidman is less so, her accent is very strained at the beginning of the movie. It gets better and she does have some good scenes (her outburst at Zellweger when the two are making the fence), but Ada isn’t exactly a multi-layered character and there’s still that accent problem. Natalie Portman is very impressive in her small role, and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Brendan Gleeson also get s...

Cold Mountain - ***1/2 or (7/10) Well, after putting it off for months I finally saw one of the most Oscar-buzzed movies of 2003....and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. With all the mixed reviews I read, I expected an average movie. The acting was terrific, Jude Law and Renee Zellweger both deserve praise(and Renee should already have her Oscar speech prepared). My only real problem with it was the unneeded "Hey, you know who I am? Look at me! Look at me!" cameos. Wait for the part where we're introduced to Georgia, a deserter played by Jack White(of The White Stripes). Not only does the camera linger on him too much, they LET HIM SING LONGER THAN ANYONE ELSE TO DRIVE HOME THE POINT. Oh well, I'll buy it on DVD regardless.

Well much like most people here i was dissapointed. The scenery was great, the editing was also good (i really payed attention to it and i really liked it) and apart for a few good cameos here and there (Hoffman and Portman for example) it was nothing special. Kidman is a great actress but she was nothing special here, she played it well but nothing mind blowing. Law is also good and some good scenes but, again, nothing great. Zellwegger was funny but the last time she said (number 1, and munber 2) i was annoyed. The actress annoys me anyway but she was good in this role and im not gonna be surprised if she gets an Oscar nod. Hopefully she doesnt win, coz she doesnt deserve it. This movie doesnt deserve to win any of the awards its been nominated for and if it wins best picture im really going to kill myself. Damn. 5/10 DMM

Cold Mountain Dir: Anthony Minghella Stars: Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger Review: Given Minghella's last two films, the pedigree of the cast and the good reviews Cold Mountain was a huge disappoinment, a damp squib of an end to a pretty good cinematic year. I'll not rehash the story for those who've not seen the film, I'll just talk about the good and bad points. The Good: It looks great, the cinematography is frequently very beautiful indeed. There are some effective cameo performances from Phillip Seynour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jack White and Giovanni Ribisi Renee Zellweger is also good, she does enliven the film with her presence, rescuing it from one star status single handed. This said she's not THAT good in it, it's just that such a lot of what surrounds her is unremittingly awful and she looks better for that. Certainly her performance is unworthy of the much talked about Oscar nomination, she is simply up to the standard that everyone in this film should be reaching. The scenes of viole...

Cold Mountain ©reel-reviews.net Rated R Running time 155 minutes Written and directed by Anthony Minghella. Based on the book by Charles Frazier Starring: Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, Renee Zellweger, Kathy Baker, James Gammon, Ray Winstone, Donald Sutherland, Natalie Portman Cold Mountain is getting highest praise early on in the award season, sweeping the nominations (at least) before the piper has even played. At first glance it appears to be receiving unabashedly glowing reviews from one and all, but look carefully. Many critics are praising the performances, many the film as a whole, but few are failing to recognize that it is, indeed, a flawed film in many ways. As such it's rather surprising to see it getting so much award season buzz. The film, which is an adaptation of the Charles Frazier novel by Anthony Minghella, labors heavily under the weight of its opening half hour. Earliest scenes, while perhaps difficult to script and streamline in a film that clocks in at a meaty 155 minutes, are stiff and lac...

The movie is only enjoyable when the both Jude Law and Nicole Kidman are apart because it is unbearable to watch them when they are together. There was absolutely no chemistry between the two. It was like watching Keanu Reeves in Much Ado About Nothing. The film only picked up when all the secondary characters appeared such as Renee Zellewegger(?), Philip Seymour Hoffman, Giovanni Ribisi, and Natalie Portman. These characters drove the film. Without them this film could've arguably as bad as Gods and Generals... wait. Nothing is as bad as Gods and Generals. But overall the film was somewhat enjoyable and it seemed that the story of the two lovers separated was only there as a tour bus to showcase the rugged and harsh life of the South during that terrible time. Which was actually interesting. If to see the film for any reason see it for that one because Cold Mountain does not deserve any nominations for Best Picture, Actor or Actress. If any nominations should be given to the film it should go to the amzing ...

SPOILERS! I knew from the trailer of Cold Mountain that it would be either very good or very bad. However, what I got was a pretty decent flick that went bad and could have had the potential to be great. The direction, acting and score was nice. Hands down to Renee Zellwegger! As for the script: The dialogue was a bit cheesy and the ending really had me saying 'good grief' along with several of those 'i love you' lovey-dovey scenes....Kidman: When you say I love you 3 times that means you're married. Law: I love you . I love you......I love you. Kidman: I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you (they embrace in a kiss) god Then the ridiculous ending I predicted. How cheesy! I liked how the movie progressively paced in an adventure though. I liked how all the characters seemed very in depth, for the most part. not one-dimensional or anything. they gave a lot of heart in the film, i'll say that, but instead of leaving it at a heartfelt story, we get a sugar-coating icing to please or displease the...

COLD MOUNTAIN - 2003 Jude Law - Nicole Kidman - Rene Zellweger I saw Stuck On You, Cold Mountain and Paycheck in 2 days and here is what I was expecting: Stuck On You would be shit, Paycheck would be OK and Cold Mountain would be in my top 10 of 2003. Here is what I got: Stuck On You (7/10), Paycheck (6/10) and Cold Mountain... definitely not what I expected. The movie plays with flashback popping out from nowhere in the beginning but then settles and plays chronologically, it was good this way, at least we understood the story better than to make the movie play from beginning to end chronologically, this way it has at least some style. The movie starts off when the enemy, whoever they were plant explosives under the good guys' base, whoever those are too. We meet Inman (Law) who looks cool and .. correct between all the others with a book and letters from his Cold Mountain sweetheart in his backpack. Seconds later everything goes ball, the camp blows into smithereens but luckily he and his friends survive, ...

It started out rather "meh"...then it got really good...and then it just got pathetic. In extra half hour of interaction between the two leads would have actually made the love story work. By the end, there was absolutely no believeability or logic behind their love, and it brought the film down. I wasn't truly invovled with any of the characters emotionally. I didn't care when any character died. But on the flipside, I really did like the fact that this wasn't a forumulaic, run-of-the-mill Civil War story. I also liked that it focused in on individual characters. And I liked the flashback structuring and how the film progressed in an "adventure, next adventure, next adventure" kinda way. I also really, really, really enjoyed the performances, especially those from Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Rene Zellweger, who both participate in a really ecclectic ensemble cast full of interesting (yet emotionally boring) characters. I also think the movie successfully shows the depressing, harsh reali...
