The mother (Pfeiffer) begins to hear voices and notice strange objects in the house. The husband (Ford) cannot determine if she is experiencing a psychotic break or if there is a spirit in their house. Deep dark secrets are revealed as the nature of the manifestations are revealed. Review: This is Zemeckis's homage to Alfred Hitchcock. Sure, entire shots are lifted from the master but I think they are honorary in nature. The film drips with that old feeling and hell even sounds like a Hitchcock film. The plot has a little bit of "Rear Window", a bit of "Psycho", and a bit of just an old-fashioned ghost story all weaved together. We all think we know where it's going but it's still fun to guess. The acting is solid with Ford taking on a type-breaking ... | | Read Entire Entry |

Granted it was slow in parts..but overall it kept me glued to the screen and jumping like I was supposed to!
Ms. Pfeiffer was fantastic as usual, but Harrison was too stoic. He could have put more emotion into his character, especially at the beginning, possibly making the ending even better. I'd give it an 8/10. [This message has been edited by dragon (edited 10-17-2001).] | | Static Link |

And a ruthless, cold-blooded murderer at that? Wow, I never saw that one coming! I think it added a lot to the movie's climax. | | Static Link |

| Posted by: Jon Lap at August 22, 2001, 5:48 pm | | Topic: What Lies Beneath 8/10 Forum: JoBlo | | WHAT LIES BENEATH was a solid picture... the critics banded together on this one and held bias, screaming "Hitchcock rip-off" and "trite and predictable." Too blinded by their association with the herd, they weren't able to recognize the re-working of a fantastic tale that haunted many a viewer. From the opening scenes (where Michelle Pfeiffer's character is spying on the couple next door) to three-quarters through when the "missing girl's" identity is uncovered, the pace and tension are fast and high... and the ambience and mood is pervasively chilling. Pfeiffer WAS incredible. The story deals on two levels, as we get a mystery-thriller, as well as a sort of "coming-of-age" story about a woman who was under the false impression that her life was perfect. It's really a story all about duplicity, and wising up to such. (8/10) | | Static Link |

The trailer did ruin the whole plot for me But the suspense and acting made up for what was a predictable plot. Michelle Pfeiffer is fucking outstanding in this movie. There are Very few actors that can even hold a candle next to her. She was hands down superb in this movie. Harrsion on the other hand ...but then again this movie is really not about him, and if you calculate it all out he is only in 1/4 of the entire movie. HEY! (spoiler sorta) Where was Cooper during the whole stuggle/fight scene in the end??? I thought for sure the dog was gonna save the day! What Lies Beneath 7.5/10 | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Deckard at August 20, 2001, 8:57 pm | | Topic: What Lies Beneath 8/10 Forum: JoBlo | | WHAT LIES BENEATH (5/10) Found the whole thing to be predictable and lacklustre. No real suspense or tension and even less believable. When compared to other films out recently it is OK. It isnt a terrible film, but I would recommend watching numerous other films instead of this. | | Static Link |

Harrison Ford was way off the mark as far any acting was concerned, and yes, he has a certain stereo-type which doesnt suit this kind of film, I was hoping to see him do good in this, but it never happened. Michelle Pfi.. Pffe.. Phiff.. However the fucki its splet, didnt do much for me either. I dont know what I was expecting, but I sure as hell didnt expect to get a damn good nights sleep when i left the cinema. It put me to sleep from the moment it started. NAH, thats shit, but hell, I was bored. The scares were far too predictable and left me wanting so badly for the real shit to start chilling me! Imagine my dissapointment when the credits started rolling! "What? No scares, no chill me to the bone?" Not a damn thing! For a Zemekis film, this should have be... | | Read Entire Entry |

I like a movie where I don't figure out the ending and I definately didn't predict the ending of this movie. OH MY GOD was it a ride, I loved the ending. I don't know why anyone would want a predictable ending, that would only drag the movie down. The movie and the ending are classic. | | Static Link |

| Posted by: psudoazn at August 19, 2001, 9:08 pm | | Topic: What Lies Beneath 8/10 Forum: JoBlo | | The movie was good in that it brought forth cheap thrills. I admit that the movie startled me a few times. However, I think that was due more to the sudden intensity of the score in the rear channels than it was to the suspense of the moment. I did not really dig the plot and I think that the ending was pretty corny. (I dont feel like giving out a spoiler, so I wont). There were some good twists, some cheap thrills, and some good camera shots, so I recommend renting this. I dub this film a 7/10. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Mike at August 19, 2001, 4:37 pm | | Topic: What Lies Beneath 8/10 Forum: JoBlo | I loved this movie. I saw it in the theater twice and on video a ton of times. The first time I saw it though I jumped quite a bit. It's probably best if you see it in the theater, it's just the kind of movie that's fun in a dark theater... This was actually the scariest movie I had seen in a long time... It was slickly done and Michelle Pfieffer was great.
I just really liked it, the best ghost story I've ever seen. I thought it was great and I've watched it with quite a few people and they've all liked it. It also depends on what mood you're in. I think it was one of the best movies of 2000. I don't get scared easy and I wasn't expecting this movie to scare me, but it did, holy shit I jumped a lot. A GREAT CLASSIC. The scariest ghost story I've ever seen. It was a classy and suspensful thriller. Big thumbs up!!! My Grade: 10/10 (It deserved it, I don't think I've jumped that many times during a movie before.) | | Static Link |

| Posted by: ilovemovies at August 18, 2001, 4:04 pm | | Topic: What Lies Beneath 8/10 Forum: JoBlo | All in all a decent movie. I thought they over did it with the river scene at the end. But still, it's a creepy movie with good work by Michelle Pfieffer and Harrison Ford. Maybe I would have liked this more if the trailers did not give many of the twists. Though there is one more twist they don't say, it does make the first half hour or so a waste of time.

And by the time the final ending rolled around, it didn't make any sense. But I have to say one of the best suspense scenes ever made was the scene in the bathtub with Pfeiffer. Harrison Ford This film got so-so reviews when it was in theaters, but it also made megabucks too. Reviewers called it "generic, it tries to be more than one movie and fails." True, it was more than one movie but, who wanted to see a half an hour of ghost talk? I think it need more than one storyline and, it definitely worked. When Claire Spencer begins seeing ghosts and hearing whispering in her home-her hubby Norman thinks she's just imagining it. She suspects it's her neighbor's ghost who may/may not be dead. Claire soon finds out a terrible secret and she must come face to face with her fears.(**Note:I got most of that sypnosis from the back of the cover because I didn't feel like making one up right now** I first saw this movie opening night and it scared me crapless! I jumped about 7 times along with the rest of the audience. I think it is a smart, creepy, cool movie with tons of action and a cool ending.
