It's a girl that doesn't have a great life who falls to sleep and dreams of a better life for herself, taking things from reality and pouring them into her dream. Small insignificant details (See, he yells "Help!" and in the mug in reality it says "SoS". See, she wants to spit her coffee when he sees her girl kissing a guy but she cant, so in her dream, there's a guy who can't take coffee. So clever) do not make a complex plot. Forum: JoBlo | | I haven't seen the movie yet, but I do know why there is only 1 chapter on the DVD. David Lynch made the movie a mindfuck movie, and that's what it apparently is. Just so the audience couldn't check chapter and chapter for different clues, he made it all one chapter. That way, the movie would remain the confusing mindfucker it is. Don't ask me why, I learned from a review I read a while ago. Otherwise, I've always been curious and hesitant about seeing the movie. | | Static Link |

In my opinion, it's the ultimate "think" film that DOES MAKE SENSE. Once you have watched it a couple times or got something off the internet after watching it for the first time. The performance by Watts was great. She was able to switch character moods with ease about halfway through the film. The film also manages to be both creepy, funny and mysterious at the same time. Name me another movie that can claim that. I hope one day a sequel is made or something like that. | | Static Link |

We're all just sort of left in the dark with not even so much as a clue to help us figgure the whole thing out. However, let's not lose hope. I found this on the IMDB. One day next week I'm gonna sit down and watch this movie again and try to solve the puzzle. Sounds like fun. David Lynch's 10 Clues to Unlocking This Thriller: Pay particular attention in the beginning of the film: at least two clues are revealed before the credits. Notice appearances of the red lampshade. Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again? An accident is a terrible event... notice the location of the accident. I'm like the kid who keeps touching the hot oven and never learns his lesson. Everytime one comes out, i hear how great it supposedly is, then watch and spend the rest of my life wishing I had that 2 1/2+ hours back to do something useful like jab pencils in my eyes. I don't want to trash the guy too much, because he has such a huge following. You cannot argue with that. Still though make a freaking movie that at least digestable on one viewing. He had me going for about the first 3/4 of the film, but after that i was completely fucking lost. That first section of the film is awesome. It sucked me right in and I couldn't wait to figure out how it ended. In fact this part of the movie might have been one of the best mystery stories I've seen on film. However That dream theory someone mentions above does makes some sense, so wouldn't it have made sense to include that in the movie. Forum: JoBlo | | Everything was good until the last 20 sumthin minutes which were obviously tacked on and hastily put together. It's obvious that Lynch meant for the characters to be developed over a longer period of time than 2 hrs. 27 mins. He should have ended the film after the woman opened to blue box, and then make a sequel to it later. The end was too hasty and mashed together to make any sense. This movie is hardly the mind-fuck masterpiece everyone says it is. Just because a movie makes no sense or is all a dream, doesn't mean it's a masterpiece. I can guarantee that had the director been unknown, instead of Lynch, this movie would have went straight to video without a word of praise, and it is so ridiculous that it got an Oscar nomination. It was mediocre, at best. | | Static Link |

It's worth a rental. Spoilers The movie is not that hard to understand. The first hour and forty minutes was not real. It was all a dream Diane was having. The last 45 minutes were real. Diane and Camilla were together, the director had a thing for Camilla, stole her from Diane, she was very jealous about this, and hired a guy to kill her. Then the guilt of having her killed represented by those little old people, (who i think were people she met at the jitterbug contest, not her grandparents because she calls them by their names.) became too much so she killed herself.
Thats the gist of it. Theres alot more to it, but that is the basic story. But I'd imagine you probably at least got that much of it, but if not there you go.
The "grandparents" were symbolic or her lost innocence and guilt brought on by having her dreams of being a star crushed and the eventual murder of her girlfriend. Respectively. Just because you didn't get it or l... | | Read Entire Entry |

I tried to understand the film. Then I just tried to enjoy it. Then I tried not to walk out of the film. I succeeded on that count only because I was hoping an explanation would come. Explanations are not always warranted in films- in fact the lack of them sometimes makes the film all that much better. This one, however, needed something more than random images passed off as a film. I still fail to see the brilliance. Everyone talks about the sub-text and hidden meanings.....the sheer brilliance! What in the fuck is the subtext behind a close up of dog shit and miniaturized grandparents? How bout a dead spanish whore who then doesn't exist but turns out to be the lead character who is stalked by a monkey/homeless person that lives behind a glorified Waffle House? FUCKING BRILLIANT! All kidding aside, I thought Watts was nothing short of fabulous. I was so moved by her portrayal, and that scene where she says "Camilla, you came back!" and the look on her face should have definitely garnered her an Oscar nomination. Yes, in my opinion, she was better than the five nominees for Best Actress (Kidman comes close, but she was nominated for the wrong performance).
