He hitches a ride on a cruise ship filled with high school grads bound for NYC. Included in the lot is a chick with some unexplained psychic link to Jason's young boy persona. Review: They say TV shows need to be put to pasture when they start relocating all their episodes....I think the same could be said for movie franchises. At some point give the series a dignified death rather than a drawn out, painful, agonizing dignity loss of a death. The plot, as usual, is thin. There is yet another unexplained and distracting psychic subplot. I'm confused as to why the young Jason has hair, appears in mirrors, and basically looks like he belongs in a "Nightmare on Elm Street" film. Then there is our protagonist himself. It was lots of fun and I didn't mind the lack of Manhattan. There were some cool deaths, "good" acting, some tense moments and a kickass ending. The part in Manhattan was pretty cool. I give credit to this movie for being the only one in this series that tried something different. I'm not saying this movie was good, it had its big flaws, but it was popcorn fun and one of the most enterteining and best of the series. Unfortunately it ended up taking it to a new degree of badness, but they at least tried to stay away from the formula and I have respect for people who try new things. --Jason seeing the poster of the hockey mask was TOO COOL for words! THE BAD: --This movie is, simply put, wasted potential. Who else would've preferred to see Jason really take on Manhattan instead of wasting time killing people on a boat and then ending up in Manhattan and not killing hardly anyone? Also, I think the lead character had potential to be a more developed character as her past with Jason was kinda interesting, but it was a hardly used plot device. --The acting and characters were AWFUL. Part 1,2,3,4 and 7 are for the fans, the rest are for them kids who wanna get the shit scared out of them at sleepovers, or for the people who like cheesy movies. Part 8 was very cheesy. Basically, it takes everything that was ever cool about the Friday the 13th series, and chucks it. What we have left is irritating charcters, lousy effects (the unmasking scene at the end), lots of buildup with very little payoff ("God, how much longer till that damn boat gets to NY?!!!"), and a oofy name. Lots of kills, but most of them pretty weak. They went light on the gore and light on the tits (the two things that define the 13th series), and went much heavier than usual on the cheesy dialouge and poor delivery.
Something else that always stuck in my craw about this movie was the setting. NY is one of the largest, most densely populated cities in the world, so why is it that the streets seem to be empty in almost every single scene? How is it that Jason can walk around with impunity, encountering only random stragglers here and there? Very odd.
Bottom line: This one just plain blew. 3/10. | | Static Link |

Granted "Jason takes Manhatten" is NOT A GOOD MOVIE. I'm not even a big fan of the Friday movies but NO Friday the 13th movie CAN be the worst movie ever. There is a always a certain amount of work put into these movies. They are a popular mainstream horror series and the people who stand behind these movies want to make MONEY. So you can bet that there is always a granted volume of thought and work behind them. Admit it, the New-York Scenes are cool and well done. The Jason-Flashback was cool and well done, even if it didn't make any sense. Some of the murder scenes were good too. The opening on the Boat was not bad either. But it is far from the worse movie and, truth be told, it is actually one of the better of the Friday the 13th films. Probably the most disappointing thing about this movie(if that is what you want to call that) is the missed opportunities. The movie is mistitled. Before watching the movie I wasn't expecting it to be great but I thought this one might actually be fun since it takes Jason out of Camp Crystal Lake and into Manhattan. Unfortunately, the bulk of the movie takes place on the cruise ship to Manhattan and they don't actually get there until the last twenty minutes of the movie!!! That was so bogus. There are a couple of funny scenes (that are actually intentional!) but even when they get to Manhattan all Jason is doing is going after the remaining survivors. That was so disappointing.
