THere's no Kubrick anymore. That's the biggest tragedy for movie fans. The Shining is a masterpiece of unease and mood. Really creepy. I agree that the ending is just unsettling. Maybe the house called him there because he's "always been there," maybe he's given that distinction for trying to deliver Danny to the house, who knows... great fucking flick though.

The Shining is by far my all time favorite horror movie. Why can't they make more horror movies like that these days? It doesn't seem like it would be THAT complicated. At least not to me. Instead, these days we get stuck with crap like "One Missed Call" and "Saw 100." Fantastic movie. Not really sure what the ending it about though, but I kind of like it like that.

Spoiler-a-fucking-lert In the book there is a furnace that needs to be maintained, because of Jack's fall into insanity he forgets to check up on it. He does chase Danny around but with a croquet mallet not an ax, and it doesn't end in the shrubbery labyrinth. When Danny tries to connect with his father, Jack smashes his own face with the mallet because I guess he's possessed by spirits within the hotel. Hollarann isn't killed by Jack. I think he actually lives with Danny and Wendy at the end I can't remember. The hotel explodes.

Like many things, I don't believe the ending was in the book. Nobody really knows the meaning of the ending. It makes it all the more mystifying and creepy.

I have a question regarding the ending, perhaps the book gives some more insight into it that somebody could share with me? The photo at the end from 1921, does that mean Jack soul, ghost or whatever, became one with the house and thus photo? Or does it mean he was actually there in 1921 and the house reclaimed him? The previous caretaker in the bathroom mentions to Jack that he was ALWAYS the caretaker and was always there, is this significant?

Maybe I would have liked this movie if I hadn't read the book but the book was so good that the movie really blew it. In the book the bushes in the back all come to life and in this one they have a maze? Pretty lame, IMO> The ending of the movie was anticlimatic. If anyone loved this movie and hasn't read the book- go read the book and you will see how great it is! Word of warning- you wont be able to put it down once you start it. Best King movies ever made- The Dead Zone and Shawshank Redemption

Its funny these are one of these films that grown on me. Im a huge King fan. I think hes one of the great writers of our time. At first I was kind of annoyed how Kubrik rearranged a lot of the subtext of Kings novel but I have watched it several times since and frankly its oppressive and onmnious atmosphere has really grown on me. Filled great performance, fantastic cinemtography, and great directing this is a movie that really ages well over time. Imagine getting scares through being subtle. Even if you are a King fan like me this is really a movie to look into. 9/10

Although the pace is uber slow and the movie tends to last forever this is still a good horror flick with decent acting and great direction. Not the horror classic it's made out to be, but good stuff anyways. 7/10

A superbly photographed film with a creepy enough performance by Nicholson, but the movie is way too long, and doesn't offer nearly as much as it seems to want to. What is it really about? Isolation, well it certainly does a good enough job of isolating the viewer, as we feel more emotionally chilly than scared (even more than a Kubrick film should be) and the scares eventually just result to boo-scares. Atmosphere is never given time to develope, and although it is sometimes quite a spectacular effort, it is at best, uneven.

Kubrick's masterfully horrific vision of Stephen King's popular novel is near perfect. The cinematography is stunning. The score is wondefully creepy and dramatic. The acting is top notch stuff not only from Jack Nicholson (in his prime), but also Shelly Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and a remarkably powerful performance from young Danny Lloyd. One of the best horror movies-- ever.

I rate The Shining a 10 out of 10. One of the great qualities of Kubrick as a director is his ability to adapt. There are few directors who can pull it off the way he can. There are few directors who will deviate from a book enough to make the film entertaining, but yet keep the integrity of the book alive in the film. Refer to his earlier work Lolita in which author Vladimir Nabokov wrote a 300 page script where Kubrick needed to break it down for the screen. Leaving large chunks of the movie out, but maintaining the story and dark humor and wit of Nabokov. Compared to the later Adrian Lynne who kept the book intact lost the humor and wit of Nabokov in favor of the lust. The Shining on the other hand equally shows Kubrick's ability to adapt a novel. Perhaps animal trees that move would have looked silly on the screen and a person with a croquet mallet is not nearly as threatening as an axe. Visually these two images would not have provided the same fear in the audiences as a maze to show confusion and a sen...

This is really a masterpiece. And I don't even think that Kubrick was going for something terrifying. I've seen it many times, and it was creepy at first, but now that I've seen more times than any other film I believe Kubrick is using it's horror elements to make it accessible and appeal to a mass audience but at the same time make a lot comments about the inhumanity of man (a common Kubrick theme) and the nature of evil. I can just picture Stanley's sly smile as people exit the theatres terrified at what they just saw and praising it. Also, I believe Jack's performance was purposely over-the-top. 10/10

I haven't seen The Shining in a really long time, but I thought it was a masterpiece. When I was younger, I remember seeing a televised version of it, and for some reason that got me even more interested. I think it was on FOX or something a good 5-10 years ago (can NOT remember )

It's a shame that The Shining and the rest of Kubrick's films weren't given the proper treatment by WB.

Yes, i don't think any 5 year old can say "Redrum". This movie was brilliantly put together by Kubrick. A bit shy off Clockwork Orange but still it was better then the book. 9/10

A good 'ol Kubrick/horror flick. IMO, this is a classic horror film that would please not only horror fans, but all around movie fans. It combines with some very scary moments, and excellent directing. And of course, a great performance by Jack Nicholson. As per said before, this is a horror film that should please all. I know I got my chills and thrills from this movie. A classic horror film. Or just a classic film on it's own. 9/10

I popped a very old VHS copy of The Shining into my VHS player. I was expecting a lot. And I got a lot. I didn't think this movie would be very scary... but I was VERY wrong. **SPOILERS** The movie starts out pretty boring. Jack Nichelson plays Jack, a innkeeper who stays at a hotel during winter to make sure the hotel is heated. But after a while he starts to go nuts. Before the cook leaves he tells the boy that he too is "a shining" and not to go in room 237. The boy (Danny) listens, but when the door is open he thinks is mom is in there, and when he gets out of the room, he has bruises all over his neck. The mother (Terry I think her name was) starts to suspect Jack. The last hour of the movie was very intense. I loved the maze seqense, and loved when Jack was trying to kill his wife. And one thing I thought was so funny was that the black guy went through Hell to get to the hotel and right when he gets into the hotel he gets hit with an axe. So I loved the movie, it was an awesome edge of your ...
