I also enjoyed the supporting cast of Paul Newman as Costner's old crusty dad, Robbie Coltrane as Penn's editor and Illeana Doughlas his her co-worker/friend. The film is also enhanced by beautiful locates of Cape Cod and N. Carolina coastline and beautifully filmed by Caleb Deschanel and underscored by lovely music by Gabriel Yared. Robin Wright Penn, as Theresa Osborne, the Chicago research journalist comes off as oh so sweet and you oh so want her to hook up with wounded widower Garret Blake, played by Kevin Costner. Costner at his quiet best in romance flicks, and here again is suited to the role of N. Carolina loner boat builder. Some may say the film slow, but what's important here is the process of romance, not the end result, as two wounded souls try to make their way to each other.
