Both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss were good as Neo and Trinity, but I especially liked Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, he was the most convincing to me acting wise. The film got a little weird with the oracle lady and don't know if really like Mr. Smith and the gate-keepers, but believed idea of matrix of non-real world created for humans. Pretty exciting ending with them dangling from rope from helicopter. Grade: 7/10 B | | Static Link |

The acting stinks, the dialogue stinks, the philosophy is pre-teen level, the endless rip-offs get tiring, a lot of potential wasted (like the Matrix being a psychological landscape for Neo's mind), etc. **1/2 | | Static Link |

The characters are set up great and the action was just so freakin cool! It was way better than the next two because this one had emotion. Emotion makes fighting cooler; that's why I love revenge movies. When Neo walks into that lobby and starts kickin ass you're rootin for him! When Neo is fighting a bunch of Smiths in Reloaded, you're thinking "Well this will be cool," but you're not rooting for him as much so it takes some of the fun away. It also had a really deep story. Any movie with AWESOME characters, AWESOME story, and BEYOND AWESOME action deserves to be an instant classic. The story itself is not original, but the approach to it is, so it feels like a completely different movie when you see it. The Matrix- 10/10 | | Static Link |

Nothing I have to say about this movie hasnt already been said. It combines old kung-fu with a kick ass question. What is The Matrix? Unfortunatly, the sequel, The Matrix Reloaded, forgot all originality this one had and just turned it into a CGI action fest. Which isnt horrible, but just nothing new. Because of this movie, we get COUNTLESS numbers of unoriginal Matrix spoofs, $ making anime disk sets, and sure to come, THOUSANDS of special editions. So has the Matrix sold out?? yes. but I did expect it to. Just see this film as a stand alone, avoid the hype, and get ready for a cool ass action movie. 9/10 | | Static Link |

The sci-fi plot really did it for me, and the truly benchmark-setting special effects were really awesome. Keanu Reeves was sufficiently doh-eyed as Neo, Lawrence Fishburn was coolly omnipitent as Morpheus. Even Hugo Weaving was a pretty brilliant villain as Agent Smith. I just lapped it up, quickly declaring it the best movie ever and watching it again and again. And then, the curse of hindsight set in. I saw Dark City, which contains a lot of The Matrix's ideas (done better, I thought) and suddenly found myself fast forwarding pretty much the whole movie up until its action sequences. There's really not a lot of resonance in the film's talkie moments, and the deep sci-fi plot (which confused quite a few people) is ultimately not as confusing as it's been made out to be. Everything about the film is not-as-good-as-you-thought, and seeing as the entire Bullet Time concept has been done to death in the years since The Matrix, their obse... | | Read Entire Entry |

Words appear on his computer screen, telling him to "follow the white rabbit". He does, and a mysterious woman named Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) tells him that "they have been looking for him" and says something about the Matrix, leaving Thomas very confused. In his work the next day, Thomas is chased by some guys. Not exactly "good guys". He meets Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), and Morpheus tells him that once he goes into the real world, he can never go back. Thomas, who becomes Neo, does. And he finds out about the Matrix and everything. That may not make sense, but it does in the movie. Thomas A. Anderson/Neo is played by Keanus Reeves, keeping his status as "cool action dude" real. He originally is skeptical, but soon learns the truth, and he begins, shall I say, enjoy it. The Matrix draws you in with special effects gadgets and weird things, but soon teeters away from that, making you glued to your seat because yo... | | Read Entire Entry |
| Posted by: Son Gohan at February 14, 2003, 12:11 am | | Topic: Reviews: The Matrix Forum: JoBlo | | 10/10 Yet another one of my all time favorite movies. This is one of those movies that I left the theatre saying "THAT KICKED ASS!" One of the best things about this movie, above everything else, is the concept. The idea of us being in a computer system can be very true. I know it sounds bogus, but it does give you something to think about. I cant wait for the sequels, as it's gonna explain a shit load more about the matrix, and have a more indepth story. The brothers said that "The Matrix" is just a movie to introduce you to the concept and characters. The sequels, and prequels will have a more deeper story. I look forward to it! | | Static Link |
| Posted by: Whiggles at May 23, 2002, 3:45 pm | | Topic: Reviews: The Matrix Forum: JoBlo | | I swear, if I hear one more rave review about this film, I'll scream. This one almost lives up to The Lord of the Rings in terms of hype; however, whereas The Lord of the Rings is actually a very good film (just too long), The Matrix suffers heavily from being badly plotted, badly written, (in most cases) badly acted, and so heavy-handed you want to hit someone. So what's not like here? On first viewing, The Matrix will probably woo you with its interesting cinematography, set design, and of course the infamous Bullet-time (which gets spoofed in every single movie made after this, and becomes more annoying each time). However, the more you watch it, the more you notice its flaws, especially the bad story construction and the hideous acting. Let's face it, Keanu Reeves is one of the worst "actors" in Hollywood. Let's put quotes round "actor", because in my opinion you have to bring something to your character in order to pose as an actor. Well, Mr. Reeves, if you consider looking stupefied... | | Read Entire Entry |

After I saw it for the first time I realized it was a movie I would have to watch several times to get what's going on, but honestly, I feel no enthusiasm for watching it again. The soundtrack was great, so were the special effects, but overall, it just didn't captivate me enough. I don't hate the movie, I just feel completely indifferent about it. | | Static Link |

I feel this is one of the most overrated sci-fi movies ive ever seen. People have been proclaiming this to be the greatest movie ever made, when its strictly average. A better example of the plot was Dark City, which didn't need cheesy martial art fights to carry the film and sell tickets. Roger Ebert put it best in his review about Dark City, and was right on with The Matrix. its a good looking film, sure, but could've used some more rewrites to have a 3rd act, flesh out characters, etc. BTW was I the only one who noticed
spoiler for any1 who cares when Neo is shooting the guards in the lobby, when he does the somersault and starts shooting, the gun is pointing in the wrong direction? that was classic end spoilers | | Static Link |

With all the buzz surrounding "The Matrix: Revisited" and the much anticipated sequal, "The Matrix: Reloaded", I find it only appropriate to go back and give points where points are due, which is obviously something that I should have done a long time ago, since this movie is around 3 years old. Put criticism aside, it has been widely and unfairly due to the fact that this *was* a mass-market movie, which makes a big deal out of its single still-frame action sequence (we all know which one I'm referring to), and it's also been blasted for having a rediculous concept to it and too much computer hooplah. But I don't buy the story for a minute, which I'm hoping everyone has the brains to realize that this is just science fiction and that it's not meant to be taken seriously (or it would be science fact, so ha!).. And this it provides entertainment at its finest. I want to first comment on the opening scene. Immediately I was drawn to the intensity of the situation before h... | | Read Entire Entry |

I mean, I didn't get the luck to see it in the theaters, and I heard everybody talk about it like it was some kind of miracle-movie. I waited impatiently for weeks to rent it in video. I watched it.
And I was disappointed. I mean, of course, it's a very good movie. But all the hype around it wasn't deserved at all. It has great special effects, nice fights, good directing, a great comic-book style script, and a lot of style. But that was basically it for me. The acting is ok -- Keanu and Lawrence Fishburne are just ok, but I was impressed with Carrie-Ann Moss and Hugo Weaving, and that's all. The dialogue was well written and had a few good one-liners. That's what the whole movie is, actually: sci-fi popcorn entertainment. No masterpiece, nothing like an historical movie. Just kick-ass action and a terrific sci-fi script... But yeah, I enjoyed it a lot anyway! 8/10 | | Static Link |

Summary: I say--without hyperbole--that "The Matrix" is the best action/sci-fi film so far this year.
--06/03/99> I say--without hyperbole--that The Matrix is the best action/sci-fi film this year so far. Roger Ebert can kiss my proverbial a@#$! for not making his review strong enough, because I was not convinced at the time. Of course, the film has its flaws, which I will point out later, but overriding that is the film's complete ambush to the senses. I knew, for example, that once Trinity flew into the window of that building from the roof of another with such dazzling SFX accuracy, that I was going to enjoy the film with or without lousy acting. Although critically, the Wachowski brothers' previous film Bound is wholly of more merit, Matrix delivers for its genre. You simply check your brain at the door, let the deluge begin, and pick it back up when the lights go up. Combining, to various degrees, good acting (many exceptions), intense action, and a terrific ... | | Read Entire Entry |
