Forum: JoBlo | | I am not sure about this but I've heard that when a movie opens it get 80% and the theaters get 20% for the first 2 weeks. Then when its been 4-5-6 weeks, the theaters get more like 35-45% and the sudios get like 55-65%. Then when a movie is at the end of its run at 7-12 weeks, the theaters get 70-80% and the studios get 20-30%. The only thing bad about this is that nowdays when a movie opens it makes most of its moeny in the first few weeks. Ex. Iron Man made $162M in its first 10 days and it has only gone on to make a total of $315M. $162 is more than 50% its entire total and thats the real problem. If you look at stats from 10 years ago.... There's Something About Mary made only $41M in its first 10 days and that was only 23% of its entire total. See the difference? I think the theaters made more back then, then they do now. | | Static Link |

| Posted by: SkyNet at July 18, 2008, 3:17 pm | | Topic: How much do theaters make? Forum: JoBlo | | it could be as simple as Muvico is one of the major movie chains... so they know they will be making MUCHO money on concession, so this way they dont need to take a ticket commission. Maybe the big chains like Regal, AMC, Muvico do that... i dont know! i do know what the GM told me, and that was that they make not even a penny on ticket sales! And the muvico i attend,, in Maryland, is (according to an article in EW) the most trafficked movie theater in the country! As for alcohol.. i know that the AMC at Universal STudios in Florida serves alcohol! It's 2 stories... such a bad ass theater! | | Static Link |

Still costs a lot to pay employees and keep the place running and all that. | | Static Link |

Does the size of the theaters and the number of screens each theater has and the numbers of seats in each theater matter to the movie distributors? What I am getting at is does it matter to the people who make the movies where the movie is shown? Do they care if the theaters showing their movies are run down, small, poor screen and sound quality and ect? | | Static Link |

| Posted by: Badbird at July 17, 2008, 5:40 pm | | Topic: How much do theaters make? Forum: JoBlo | | That stuff about not making money off tickets is largely a myth. Yes, we make money at the box office, but not all of it. We split the gross with the movie studios. At first it's usually 50/50. Sometimes even 60/40 (Them/Us) on big event movies, but not always. Then for every week the movie plays, the percentage gets better in our favor. Eventually we make 70% off the ticket sales. So it's in a movie theater's best interest for a movie to have good word of mouth and longevity. It's in the studio's best interest to open up huge and fall fast so they can maximize their grosses. Movie theaters make a bulk of profit on food. But the problem they've run into is that these huge megaplexes cost a lot of money to operate. You have to have huge staffs, huge heating/electric bills, and the huge buildings equal huge rent. The industry would be a lot healthier (and cheaper) if they hadn't ballooned in the 90s with a 20-plex on every corner. If it was mostly 6 and 8 plexes, the industry would be completely different. | | Static Link |

The quality is never as strong as a theater or even a real dvd. As for theaters, some do make some money from tickets, but it is usually low. I hear people say they paid more than $10 for a ticket, I am shocked. For me, the best theater in my area charges $8. | | Static Link |

It's all about the food, which does take a toll when you go to the movies at least once a week, usually twice. | | Static Link |

| Posted by: AndrewDB at July 17, 2008, 12:54 pm | | Topic: How much do theaters make? Forum: JoBlo | | Theaters usually generate about .2% of revenue off of ticket sales. Just enough to pay for the ink and the ticket it's printed on. Where they make their money is snacks and food. Snacks and food, from what I can garner, have a 50-65% markup. Studios and thespians get the other 50-45%. | | Static Link |

That is why Sodas/ popcorn/ candy/ food/ is all expensive as shit, cuz that is the only place they make money. That is why movie theaters hold the performance of a film in their hands... if a movie is released and the theater manager puts that movie on their biggest screen, with the most seats, and that movie under-performs, then the next week that movie is in their smallest theater and the week after, generally it's gone. They need to put the biggest and best film in their theaters that house the most seats, because this way they can sell more tickets to that show and thus more people will purchase refreshments. This weekend.. i have a theater near me, Muvico... that is 24 screens, they have 6 huge screens... 5 of them i guarantee are Dark Knight and i am willing ot bet one of them is going to be Mama Mia... but if Mama Mia underperforms in ticket sales... come monday, Mama Mia will be in a small screen and Dark Knight will occupy al... | | Read Entire Entry |

| Posted by: AshleysDad at July 17, 2008, 10:32 am | | Topic: How much do theaters make? Forum: JoBlo | | Hello All. Anyone know how much theaters make? It seems theaters complain like gas stations that they do not make hardly any money and that is why popcorn and a coke costs $10 now. I do not want to get into gas stations. I know they make like 7 cents a gallon and that is why they all opened up stores where they used to fix cars. Sadly enough by me all the theaters stink. They are all old and smelly and broken seats with all small screens. I live in a nice area too! The average house is about $300,000 with local taxes to be an average of $7000. I have had conversations with the theaters corporate office managers (Regal and AMC) and they have no plans to fix or replace the 4 crappy theaters in my area. They all claimed they do not make much money. I argued of they built us decent theaters more would come. If I want to see The Dark Knight in a great theater on a BIG screen I have to travel past 4 theaters and drive an extra 25 minutes. Right now two of the theaters will be playing The Dark Knight on a combined ... | | Read Entire Entry |
