I have to agree with most. He is in a slump. I went to see THE HAPPENING. And i must say i was very let down. I guess i was expecting alot more from this since it was his first R rated film. But i was wrong.

Haven't seen "The Happening". "Sixth Sense" was a great film, duh. "Unbreakable" had me right up to the lame-ass Dragnet-esque ending. "Signs" was a cool concept and decent film with an infuriating second half. I don't think he really knows how to direct actors. Ditto "The Village"--again, nice concept, great cast but a really really fuckin' lame reveal & really awkward, embarrassing exposition done by the characters to help "sell" the twist. "Lady In The Water" I had to turn off in the middle. After that piece of indulgent shit, I swore off M Knight's flicks for good. Fuck 'em.

I've always liked this guys movies, some nmore than others, but I like the feel and atmosphere he creates. The twist thing is a blessing and curse, but with a guy likehim branching out into a totally difference genre would be very interesting, maybe not comedy, but something other than thriller/twist/drama. That said he does come cross as a bit of an ass at times.

I won't lose all hope in M. Night until he puts together an utter piece of shit. I'm talking one of the worst if not THE worst movies you've ever seen. Something Uwe Boll esque, or maybe even on par with a shitty shitty B movie. Until that actually happens, I just can't rule the dude out.

Night is the new Hitchcock. Now don't crucify me for saying that, I love Hitchcock movies. They are both very similiar in their styles. Hitchcock had many flops throughout his time but yet he is hailed as a genius. Night has had a few movies that were not as good as the previous ones but they all did really well. They both create suspense like it is no ones business. They both take our most basic fears and make them a reality on the screen. For instance, one reason why I thought The Happening was so good was because it played on one of our most basic fears, the unknown. Now you cant come back and say "well that just proves that he sucks becuase he steals from Hitchcock." Its the movie industry everyone steals from each other. If they didnt we wouldnt have any of the Tarantino movies. Night is somebody who has stuck with what he knows which is storytelling. The only problem I think you guys have is that he changes from movie to movie to storytell in a different way. He is orginal and doesn't stick w...

Hey, it did $30 million against big time competition (the two movies ahead of it did $55 and $35 million as well), and it's rated R. I'd say it did pretty good. Will it hold up? Who knows, but he's not done. What a twist!

Thats OK, I am done with this stupid conversation. Just by looking at the numbers and the response to all but two of his films the proof is in the pudding. I have no interest arguing with this person anymore, he does not want to learn . . . He just has an opinion and is sticking to his guns regardless of the actual facts. So I am done.

I can imagine myself growing a massive ego after making a film with one of the best twists in recent history. Still, that's no excuse to carry on desperately trying to reel them off unnecessarily in the rest of your work, which seems to be the main peeve with this guy. I've only seen three of his films, two of which I liked, one of those being 'The Village', which I will stand by any day. He is a fine, fine director and not much less of a writer. Where is the proof of this EGO through his writing? I'm not going against the statement, I've just never noticed this myself. From what I've seen, he started off fantastically, had a slight dip, came back up again. I'll see if this wave continues after seeing 'The Happening' tomorrow.

The problem with Night IS his ego. I dont even think its his scripts. Shit scripts get approved all the time. The problem is he is probably the biggest control freak in all of Hollywood. That makes him an utter pain in the ass for studios to work with, even when he was the star of the day. The thing is,however, your only one hit away from being AWESOME again. Theres always going to be SOMEONE who will roll the dice with the guy for a potential hit. Really, he needs to just put the GET OVER HIMSELF and put the fucking writing pen DOWN and direct a movie written by someone else. Hes a VERY talented director, but its clear his writing is getting worse with each movie he does in my opinion. Even THE HAPPENING, which i thought was a step up froim the ego-trip-on-film that was LADY IN THE WATER, sufferd every time the main character opend thier mouths.

Studios approve shit scripts all the time. Hell, half the time the shit in most scripts comes from the studios themselves thinking they can write better than the writers. If the script quality is in the eye of the beholder and even if 10 studios thought it was shit and didn't want nothing to do with it, at least one looked at it and said "Why not?" and took a shot. That in and of itself, like I said, is more than most directors/writers can say. Not to mention the movie DID make money andis fairly successful already. So from a business stand point- He still sells. Sure, 30mil opening weekend for a 60mil project may seem like bad mojo. But if you do the math and look at history, it's most likely to at least break even on it's theater run and then make lots of cash on the DVD sales. The guy ain't going nowhere any time soon.

OK try to follow me here - A List directors don't have problems getting studio deals like he has had with this one and studios don't often pass on A List directors' projects. If Peter Jackson had written The Happening to direct - studios would be fighting for it. Despite what you claim is a risky project with an unorthodox story. M Knight should already have a deal at a studio where they are willing to produce his next 5 films. He has burned some bridges, but for some reason - you people are not recognizing that fact.

I think the thing that I respect most about M. Night is that he is faithful with his ideas, that...You never really know how successful something will be until you just jump in the water with it. I'm sure he worried about such films as The Village and Lady in the Water, but if he held off on making them because he was afraid of the reception they would get, he'd never really know how it'd turn out. I personally loved every movie he's put out. I'm yet to see The Happening but I will this week and i'm sure i'll love it too. The Village wasn't a disappointment, but its just something thats hard to watch, because no experience matches the first time you see it. So I respect him in the sense that he isn't afraid to try new things. I look forward to seeing the Airbender movies. I think it will give him the time he needs to form a new original idea after that trilogy is over. So. We won't be seeing another original from M. Night for a while.
