I liked the books, they definitely kept me entertained and were a good read, but the film series is truly something else. It started off pretty weak, just like the books... The introduction to Harry's world was cartoonish, animated, superficial and way too obviously kid-oriented. Director Chris Columbus (and J.K. Rowling in the books as well) continued this trend with the second film. But by the third book, things started to get more interesting. We started to learn more about the past, Harry's parents, the folklore Rowling hinted at in the first two novels that were too preoccupied with being generic to do anything good with it. And at the same time, Warner execs decided to get a truly talented director onboard to deliver something extra with the movie. And Alfonso Cuaron did just that, making the third movie better than the previous two combined, by leaps and bounds; finally someone with a gritty, realistic vision for the world, and not the cartoony colouring-book ... | | Read Entire Entry |

All the movies are at least great, some are absolutely fantastic. 4. 3/5 (tie). 2. 1. To me, the movies are easy to like, but difficult to love. After seeing "Order of the Phoenix," I've begun to feel that these are almost all essentially the same -- Harry goes back to Hogwarts another year, evil things start happening, but he saves the day in the end. : ? It's possibly my favorite of the books (although The Deathly Hollows was pretty fucking awesome). Here's how I rank the movies. 1. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets- Insanely faithful to the novel, extremely dark, and very intense. Chris Columbus knocked this one out of the park and took arguably the weakest novel in the series, and really made it something special. 9/10 2. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix- Although not as faithful to the book as I would have liked, it still is a great film. The acting has matured much to this point, and the quality of action is increasing. 8/10 3. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire- Considering how great the novel was, it had a lot to live up to, and it almost made it there. There were a few big things that they left out from the novel though, which is why it isn't closer to the top of the list. Still an extremely entertaining, well-made and great film. 8/10 4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban- Yes, it's ... | | Read Entire Entry |

I would rank the movies like this: 1. Prisoner of Azkaban 2. Goblet of Fire 3. Order of the Phoenix 4. Chamber of Secrets 5. Sorcerer's Stone I'm very disappointed that they're having David Yates direct the next two books (three movies) because I feel like Order of the Phoenix is the worst of the "good" movies. While better than the more kid-friendly Columbus films, I think Mike Newell and especially Alfonso Cuaron made far superior films. And, while the movies aren't the greatest movies of all-time, they're still excellent. Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, The Forbidden Forrest, and the great hall are all exactly as I had imagined, and equally as gorgeous. The movies are visually stunning and captured my imagination and put it onto the screen. Starting with the 3rd one, the movies got darker and better, and with the incredible addition of Ralph Fiennes, who plays Voldemort more bad ass then I could possibly imagine, I can not fucking wait for Half Blood Prince this fall. I saw the last one in IMAX, and will continue to do the same with each new one. And did you guys hear about that theme park they're creating in Universal Studios? The Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Forum: JoBlo | | I am a huge fan of this incredible series (both movies and books); I agree that each installment continues to get better and better (The Order of the Phoenix is my favorite so far.) Daniel Radcliffe has proven himself a great actor and capable of playing the famous teen wizard (Emma Watson and Rupert Grint do justice to the rest of the trio, Ron and Hermione, as well; I picture them now whenever I read the books.) It's also quite amazing that this is the highest grossing film franchise in film history (topping ALL the James Bond films). Christopher Columbus did a decent job with the first two installments and was very faithful to the source material. Alfonso Cuaron brought a darker and visually gorgeous look to the series in Prisoner of Azkaban, while Mike Newell awakened the teen hormones/sexual tension of the series' young actors quite well in Goblet of Fire.
