Moulin Rouge was a huge surprise to me because i absolutely hate musicals. i did however really enjoye this film. the direction and cinematography were excellent and all the scenes look great with nice use of colour, there were also some good CG moments. usually songs in musicals really annoy me but the songs in Moulin Rouge were very good being well written and sounding great. the performances were also mostly very good and helped me get into the film although on watching some of it again i didnt find it to be as good as first time round, Moulin Rouge is still a highly enjoyable film, which is saying something since i friggin hate musicals 9/10

I love director-screenwriter Baz Luhrmann's frenized, electric, energized style of his musical "Moulin Rouge". The sets are absolutely fantastic, even if they were built on an Australian soundstage, love the "elephant house" set. Nicole Kidman is just perfect as Satine the singer-dancer and star attraction of the Moulin Rouge. Kidman was robbed of the best actress Oscar that year as she was sexy, playful, tender and funny at all the right moments, loved her entrance coming down from ceiling on a swing singing "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend", what a beautiful singing voice she has. Ewan McGregor was wonderful as Christian, the poor bohemian writer that falls for Satine, boy that guy can sing, loved the duet he did with Kidman and all the other songs he sang. Also loved Jim Broadbent as the M.C. of the Moulin Rouge, his "Like A Virgin" sequence funny. I love the pulsating beat of it all, always moving to whatever song (loved the tango sequence "Roxanne") pl...

A truly amazing film will do more than just entertain. It will reach into your soul and connect with you on a very intimate level. I think that everyone will feel this connection with at least one film in their lifetimes and for me, Moulin Rouge! is that film. Moulin Rouge! is a musical with a superficially simple plot. Boy meets girl. Plot complications ensue. Love overcomes. Some of my friends have taken issue with its sappiness and unoriginality because it follows conventions of 95% of other love stories. They even point to how nary a song within it was originally written for it. Madonna, Elton John, Whitney Houston, Sting, David Bowie, Nirvana, and Gloria Estefan did all of Moulin Rouge's work and Baz Luhrmann merely made an over stylized mix tape. I obviously disagree wholeheartedly. I love how Moulin Rouge! breathed new life into a lot of songs that I had never been exposed to and used these songs to perfectly describe Satine and Christian's feelings towards one another. Elephant Love Medley used about...

One of my all time personal favorite movies! Unlike some other people, I actually enjoyed the first 30 minutes of the film, I loved the colorful design and the ditzy editing. I sat through the whole thing without blinking an eye and it was worth the ride. The songs weren't too original I'll admit that, but the way Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, and Jim Broadbent sang, they melted my heart. I didn't like Nicole Kidman before this movie, but after this film, I fell in love with her. She was so beautiful in it. Her eyes, her clothes, her hair, everything! She has a great voice and every day I have to listen to her sing "One Day I'll Fly Away", her best performance to date. Ewan McGregor was excellent as well, that boy can sing! God I wish I had a voice like him. All the cast were amazing and they were some of the main reasons I loved this film. Of course, the songs, the dance, and the story made me believe in *love*. I have never cried so hard after watching a film before, but the scene at the end wher...

By taking a period story, set in the last year of the 19th century and injecting it with his own, highly individual, style Baz Lhurmann drags the musical genre kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Moulin Rouge has single handedly resurrected the musical as a box office draw (doubtless contributing to the decision to greenlight Chicago, which had been a long time coming) and for this alone it deserves recognition. For the story Lhurmann gives a variation on his previous film William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet presenting another pair of star crossed lovers, ultimately parted by death. He has wisely cast actors that can sing, rather than singers in the lead roles and Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor do him proud in both disciplines. Though she has less screen time it is Kidman who is the lead and her performance is quite stunning. Until Eyes Wide Shut I was not a big fan of her acting but since that film she has grown with every performance and her Oscar nomination for Moulin Rouge was well deserved (T...

MOULIN ROUGE a Baz Luhrmann movie I loved this flick. I'm usually not one to enjoy love stories (last romantic film I enjoyed was NOTTING HILL...you get the picture), but I figured I'd watch this one, as Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor are people I dig, and borrowed the DVD from a friend. Watched it. Gave the DVD back to my friend. And bought myself my own. I truly did love this movie. The story is taking, the visuals are breathtaking, the directing is inspired...But the three main strengths of the movie are: 1°) The songs -- there's only one word to describe them: FANTASTIC. From Come What May to the Elephant Love Medley and El Tango de Roxanne (my three personal faves), they're all based on known modern songs and re-use the same lyrics, but reinvent them in a magnificient way. Heck, you listen to these songs and you literally FEEL in love. 2°) The acting. Not only McGregor and Kidman are perfect, but the whole cast (Leguizamo, Broadbent, etc) are fantastic. Great ensemble of actors who all deliver remarkab...

Top notch acting, Fantastic dreamlike visuals, Awesome multiple soundtracks, Excellent 2 dvd set with countless options and easter eggs, Ewan McGregor, wow, it just gets better and better. Baz Luhrmann you are a genius!!!!!

So...this movie was truly incredible. Like some of the best movies, I find myself at a loss for words when trying to write anything about this flick. Every detail seemed to be tweaked to perfection, and every moment seemed to have hours of labor poured into it. Admittedly, the first time I saw the first 20 minutes of this movie, I turned it off. But, only an odd and sudden urge to turn it back on made me realize what a fantastic film I had almost passed up. It is utterly original in every way. Really, a lot of what made the movie so special was its seamlessness. To be so complicated, sleak and at times confusing, yet not feel choppy or uneven in plot or presentation is a true accomplishment. 9/10

This is one of my favorite movies. The colors, the editing, the singing, the Ewan...all fanatstic. And the mise-en-scene, gorgeous! I thought the idea of putting modern music in a period film was so clever. I have seen this movie 16 times and will watch it over and over again. I know the story isn't so original, but the ending is so great. What an atypical Hollywood ending. Great film, I love Baz Luhrmann

MOULIN ROUGE (2001) genre- Musical/Romance/Drama plot- A poet falls for a beautiful courtesan whom a jealous duke covets in this stylish musical, with music drawn from familiar 20th century sources.... review- it`s not often when a film like this comes along! the film is very artistic and poetic! you get the feeling that the people you`re watching are graceful swans singing a song of love! and not "JUST" a couple of actors out their singing!! this movie is the epitomy of what good film making is all about! the story and the music just blend so well that i don`t think you can call it a musical, drama, or a romance... no, this is the very voice of God on film! hehehehe.. maybe a little to big of a complement? but hey this is a great movie! the only real complaint i have about this movie is the song writting.. okay so they copied a few songs and changed them around a little... it`s not that big of a deal but it would have been very cool if they would`ve written their own music for the film! but again ...

Mr_Cheese if the music sucked, I can’t begin to imagine what in the world you did for those two hours. Honestly, between the amazing acting and singing of Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman’s grace, and John Leguizamo’s charmingly silly role as Toulouse, Moulin Rouge was a feast for the eyes. Fat Boy Slim managed to beautifully out-do himself and put together a spectacular slew of new-age songs with an old twist. The plot was classic, but was very fresh and was approached with a very original attitude. To mix so many flavors of music and movie elements would normally make me sick, but Mr. Luhrman threw us a masterpiece of the big screen. Needless to say, I only needed to see it once before I set aside $45 to buy the DVD and soundtrack! 10/10, bravo.

This is the best movie of the year. I absolutely loved it--I laughed, I cried (boy did I cry!), it made me happy, it made me sad. It was an amazing ride from beginning to finish (that's why I own the movie now). There was infinitive chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGreggor. I looooove Ewan McGreggor. He's soooo cute in this movie and both stars are surprisingly wonderful vocalists, speaking as one myself. The soundtrack was soooo amazing (which is why I also own that as well!). This movie is a risk-taker and I admire that. Most actors, actresses, directors, etc. would be too chicken to try a movie that is so different from others, which has well-known and loved actors singing in a musical that is very fun, colorful and bright. I love movies that are about "truth, beauty, love and freedom." The love story in this movie is so touching and beautiful and made me cry so hard. It's just not fair. The music tells a story, as well and it's so beautiful, especially the musical sequences between Ew...

I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!
At first I was not going to see it but my friend convinced me and since then I have seen it 8 times!!! I think that all the costumes, the set design and the actors seal together the film. I was surprised to see that it had a alot of comedic moments...the one thing that I found corny was the love story between Nicole and Ewen...but I forgive that aspect and think the movie was good...

Superb acting, impressive production design, cool cinematography and nice tunes make out an entertaining film. The storyline was a bit thin, but it kept me interested. Directing was extremely over-blown, but surprisingly the film didn't get to my nerves. I was hoping for a bit more quiet and poetic moments in between all the noisy spectacle and in the end the film was lacking in emotional substance, despite a couple of heart-warming early scenes. Still a good film overall. 7/10.

i have never been a huge fan of musicals, but i have to say that i was extremely imppressed wqith moulin rouge. i thought that the movie was all around a winner. when i first heard of who was starring in the film, i didn't think much of them. i had never really heard of ewan mcgregor, and i wasn't a big fan of nicole kidman. from the very begining of the film, i was impressed at how the concept and the setting was set. i showed mcgregor as a striving writer, who didn't think much of himself or his life for that matter. it seemes that the only thing that remotely interested him was love. the concept of love absoluteky fascinated him. on the other hand, kidman palyed a young girl working int he moulin rouge, kind of the "place to go" back in their day. the film is about how these two opposites find love in one another, and how they fight to make there love last. i liked the concept from the very begining of the movie, but what really interested me, was the way the film was presented. i absolutely lov...

Every now and then a movie comes along that millions love but I just don't care for at all. This is one of those films for me. I just don't see anything at all in this movie to inspire the kind of estatic following it has developed. Basically its a musical set in Paris around 1900 yet all the songs are 70's and 80's pop tunes. Thats it! Thats the big grand deal!!! Well maybe bearded fat men wobbling around singing "Like a Virgin" get your rocks off but it doesn't do squat for me. The plot was like a bad episode of the tv show "Bewitched" Remember on "bewitched" when Darren and Samantha would have to come up with those rambling improvasational explanations of the strange shit their friends and neighbors would sometimes witness. Thats all they did in this movie. Duke sees something and begins to suspect Nicole Kidmans character is sleeping with the writer. Someone cooks up an on the spot explanation to cover it up. Later he becomes suspicous again and someone rambles and sputters ...

I must say that I thought this movie is a bit overrated. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it, but I just don't think that it deserved all those 8/10, 9/10, and 10/10. Well, with that out of the way, I was entertained by this movie. The music was good and it was visually impressive, however, some of the scenes were just a bit out there for me. I thought the beginning with the weird fairies was weird and that whole can-can bit was a little odd. On the other hand, the acting was terrific (especially Kidman and Jim Broadbent and John Leguizamo). I thought Ewan McGregor did well too, but nothing too special. Overall, this was a strange, yet enjoyable movie that definitely had its moments. 7/10.

YUCK - YUCKY - BLECH! I like the visuals, the story line was good but... THE MUSIC SUCKED BIG TIME! It seems to me that the music was done the way that it was so that your average moron could feel like a genius because they could pick out where the lyrics came from... It would have been a fabulous movie if only they spent some time creating original music... Visuals 8/10
Storyline 8/10
Music 1/10 And due to the music I must give the movie overall... 4/10

Surreal musical romance starring Nicole Kidman as a Parisian nightclub singer who must choose between a dorky rich patron and a smoldering poor writer. The film innovates an operatic musical format in which songs of different Twentieth Century genres are chosen for their hook-lines, and performed in loud, overbearing medleys. Love it or hate it, if you buy into the childish romance angle you can't get enough of the overwhelming visual and sound images. If you don't feel like being dazzled, you're in for a long and painful wait for the movie's merciful end.

I felt like I was hopped up on goofballs the whole time. The directing was exhilirating, the soundtrack was brilliant (Nirvana? Wow!) The characters were perfectly acted and cast. You know what? I was on a plane to England for my honeymoon, and Moulin Rouge was one of the inflight movies. I'd heard the hype, I love a good piece of art, so I switched it on. Unfortunately (or so I thought at the time), there was a problem with the sound, so I could only see the visuals.
Fast forward to yesterday, when i came home to find my flatmates asleep in front of the TV, with the Moulin Rouge DVD playing away.
Intrigued, I started it again, because the visuals seemed so... colourful... on the plane.
You know what? I couldn't watch more than 15 minutes of it. It was embarrasing, being an Australian, and having this film deemed by some as the best aussie film to come out in ages. I *tried* to like it but every second that ticked by was agonising and made me cringe. The dialogue was so two-dimensional it was appalling. The songs and lyrics were so inappropriate, as if Baz wanted to make Romeo and Juliet II but failed dismally. If it had've been a Kylie Minogue filmclip I would have unders...

Moulin Rouge - 7/10. Now there's a shocker for you - I actually did like this movie! If you've seen me critique anything else, you wouldn't expect this, since normally a movie of this brand don't go far with me. Actually, the first (and only) time I saw it on DVD, I was watching it with someone who eats movies like this up like popcorn. And, typically, she has a taste in movies that is enough to make a man throw up.. So I had low expectations for this one. But to my surprise, it was unique. It mixes a musical masterpiece with a twisted sense of humor and satire on many levels. Nichole Kidman's performance was something unlike any other performance of hers: good! haha.. anyway, this was something good enough to earn an accomplishment.. 7/10.

I loved it, the story was fantastic, the acting was extraordinary, and the music was awesome. I can not say a single bad thing about this movie besides the waaaaaaay to hyper begining, but it later turned into a wonderful and breath-taking odysey through the brilliant mind of Oscar Snubbed, Baz Luhrman. * GRADE - A *

This was one of the best movies of 2001. Flashy, exciting, heartbreaking, funny, dramatic. This movie has it all. Not to mention the movie has fantastic singing from all the leads, which redefines the music genre. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor turn in great performances, especially Kidman, who I hope wins the Oscar. The two sing several songs together, and they are very romantic and real. They have great chemistry. The costumes, makeup, and anything technichal is great in this film, which makes it truly eye-popping. The direction and writing is also above par. Overall, MOULIN ROUGE is a breathtaking film experience. 9.5/10

The actors have an opportunity to shocase multi-talents, and Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor do this well. I hope to see this picture get numerous oscar nods. It was a breakthrough movie, and I'm looking forward to seeing more like it.

I have to admit that I hated it the first time I saw it. On my first viewing, it seemed that way too much was going on. I believe that in a previous review, I had called it a "musical on LSD". The ambiguity of the movie (with its seemingly conflicting messages of love and loss) got me to watch it again. After a second viewing, I saw it for a third, fourth, and fifth time. Six days later, I mailed it back to Netflix knowing that I had experienced one of the best movies of the year. What makes Moulin Rouge great is that it actually gets better with time. What initially seemed caricatured, strange, and out of place eventually metamorphized in my mind to something that seemed geniously calculated and relevant to the storyline. This is a movie that has shades of Shakespeare in it (not surprising from a man who remade "Romeo and Juliet"). It has complex themes relating to the reality of love -- not only the advantages (as we see in every Hollywood story), but also its very real repercussions (t...

This is my all time favourite movie. Baz Lurhmann deserves an Oscar for amazing vision and direction- he is a genius, his wife Catherine Martin deserves an Oscar for unbelievable costumes and set design. I have seen this movie 5 times at the cinema and lost count on video and now own the DVD and it makes my emotions soar every time I see it. It is incredibly original and daring, something I think the critics completely missed. I didn't know anything about the movie when I first went to see it, and was completely blown away. My only regret is that I'll never be able to see this movie for the "first time" again. I'd love to have that incredible sense of wonder that I felt the first time I saw it. How can you sum up Moulin Rouge.
One of the greatest movies of the year?
One of the most inspirational pieces of film making to be seen in quite some time?
A stunning set of images, so beautifully placed on the screen?
Acting that cn be related to, and bring those women amongst us to tears?
A story line worthy of a standing avation considering what some Hollywood movies produce today?
A musical everyone likes? Yup, that pretty much gets the jist of it.
This movie was without any doubt the best movie of 2001. Baz Luhrman, surpasses himself in this production and shows an unorthodoxed way of reflecting beauty on screen, through his means of directing.
And what about hte introduction with the animated little composer...that just set me in the mood (a surreal one at that) to what was going to be a great movie...and it didn't change the entire way.
Granted, the film had it's parts where it drags out slightly, but i'm yet still to find a perfect movie. If this one doesn't get an...

The first time i saw Moulin Rogue i didn't think much of it, but when i watched it again i thought it was pretty good, it's sure one of the best musicals i have seen anyway, the acting was well done by Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman.
The best bit of the film must have been the Lady Marmalade song that they did and they made it into like a remix, that was pretty cool.

When I first saw the movie, I was with my then-boyfriend, my best friend, and her then-boyfriend. I had been eagerly anticipating the flick, and I thought it would be a good date movie. When we walked out, we looked at each other and I knew what was running through our heads: "What the fuck did we just watch?" We thought it was stupid, overdone, etc. etc. Then, just this past weekend, my aunt picked it up to rent, so I sat and watched it again. Moulin Rouge is definitely a movie one should watch more than once if one didn't like it the first time. It's dramatic, beautiful, and of course (at times) silly. I think this works because those who didn't like it the first time didn't know what to expect, but seeing it a second time knowing what to expect is a definite advantage. First off, the whole movies bounces along like a cheesy 80's pop music musical... ouch! Everything that can be over-acted is. The look and feel of the movie goes way over the top in every possible department. If you're a fan of absurd movies like "A Clockwork Orange", I can see how you'd also like this. The acting is so-so, at best, but I may be just saying that because of how much I disliked the entire project as a whole. I've never been one for movies that play like real life but just can't be pictured as 'real'. That is to say, I can suspend reality for an action movie, or a fantacy flick, but there's just no way I can shut my brain off long enough to enjoy this film. It was very "American Psycho - esque" in the sense that I just kept sitting there asking myself why I hadn't turned it off yet. I kept waiting for the big "thing" to mak...

I apologise to those who will obviously hat my judgment, but i really wasn't wanting to see Moulin Rouge when it was released, and when i saw it i knew why. The film is really a music spectacle, but the style is simply dated. The camera angles were nausiating and the dance scenes were cut so much that it looked like teens at a rave. I must , however congratulate Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor on their courageous siging efforts. Overall the movie wa slow and far too similar to Romeo and Juliet.

Allow me to be the first to pan "Moulin Rouge." "Moulin Rouge"-C Extravagent, flashy, sometimes hysterically melodramatic, and uneven, the latest from Leo's "Romeo + Juliet" director Baz Luhrmann is a visual marvel, full of imaginative sets, costumes, and camera work that will make it surefire Oscar bait in those respective categories. However, the film also falls short of being truly "visionary" or groundbreaking with a love story as painfully unemotional and formula as "Pearl Harbor's" and a use of comtemporary songs and lyrics as its libretto (yep, this puppy's a musical) that gets kind of weird the longer this goes on (like Jim Broadbent's character singing "Like a Virgin"). It's not Nicole Kidman or Ewan McGregor's fault (they do themselves proud); Luhrmann's a wonderful stylist, and I'll take his work over Michael Bay (who with "PH" is one step closer to becoming a legitimate hack), and "Moulin Rouge" over the exceedingly s...
