Best reply on the whole freaking thread. The god Zeus appears in Clash of the Titans.... And the Devil in that movie is called Calibos. This reply just game me an idea. Lets revive this thread by posting different gods from different movies...not just the christian god and devil, but gods from other religions as well.

Yeah, though I am drawn towards religously themed movies, Servants of the Twilight was a real let down. Thought it was badly directed, and its too dark. I mean, I know the movie is called Servants of Twilight, but come on, we still need to see whats going on! But overall, it felt too cheesy to be taken seriously.

Im also interested in characters that play God like roles and that represent God in the story. For example, Emma Thompsons character in Stranger than Fiction. In this movie Ferrell is looking for the author who wrote his life story, to question her why he is going to die. She is God in this movie, and Ferrell is man questioning God about death. This movie is very similar in themes to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner . On this film, the replicants (basically a bunch of rebel cyborgs) are looking for their creator to question him about their eventual deaths. Why do we last so little?? Why cant we live more? Essentially, Tyrell is God (the creator) and the replicants are man, questioning their creator about why they have to die so soon. In fact, this movie goes a little further, it shows extreme anger towards god, and even goes as far as to actually killing him.

{B]mel1ssa [/b]- Of course there is something to be said for your therory as well (read below). From Wiki: Hail Mary (French: Je vous salue, Marie) is a 1985 French film written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard. The film is a modern retelling of the birth of Jesus Christ. Plot The movie tells of the "Virgin Mary", Marie (Myriem Roussel), who works at a Swiss gas station. She plays basketball for a local team, claims to be a virgin and maintains a chaste relationship with her boyfriend Joseph (Thierry Rode), who is a taxi cab driver. When a passing stranger named Uncle Gabriel (Phillippe Lacoste) informs Marie that she will become pregnant despite remaining chaste, she is at first shocked and confused. In time, Joseph's anger subsides, and the expectant couple marries. They raise their son, Jesus (Malachi Jara Kohan), who eventually leaves his family to pursue "his father's business." Meanwhile Marie explores her sexuality, seeking to link her individual body and spirit. Reception Hail Mary...

An Artcle from: The Journal of Religion and Film http://www.unomaha.edu/jrf/greeleya.htm in which the author says: "Movies may emphasize the merciful, but the images of God include both mercy and justice and the emphasis mirrors the emphasis on mercy in our own culture. We are, on the whole, optimists, and the images of God in the movies support such optimism." But he has cherry picked these images and have left out all of the darker images of God . . . read it and draw your own conclusions about what he has to say.

If it was a limited release in the USA, it would be fine. People would be upset, refuse to go to the movie, etc. I'm not so sure about that in a world wide release. Just today- the country of Jordan wants to prosecute the Danish editors for breaking the Jordanian law of not printing Mohammud. It is punishable by 3 years imprisonment. In America (by contrast) when they put a crucifix into a jar of urine for the sake of "art", there was outrage, and a national debate, but no one went to jail. No one was even tried in a court of law. So I think we all agree on that one (spacemonkey and mel1issa). Anyway, my vote for God's voice has to be James Earl Jones, although I'm not sure that he's actually done that voice before... Help anyone?

Here's a stretch but in Ingmar Bergman's "Through A Glass Darkly" a character says this. ‘The door opened, but the God was a spider. He came up to me and I saw his face. It was a terrible, stony face. He scrambled up and tried to penetrate me, but I defended myself. All along I saw his eyes. They were cold and calm. When he couldn’t penetrate me, he continued up my chest, up into my face and onto the wall. I have seen God.’ She only describes seeing God but her words are so powerful that most dvd covers for this movie take the image.

There's a lot of great appearances by the Devil, not the least of which are VIGGO MORTENSON in the PROPHECY and PETER STORMARE in CONSTANTINE But God never appers, because the inference in Christian mythology has always been: to beset eyes on God, in any form, is too powerful for even your soul to handle, and you will be blinked from existence. Pretty 'convenient' if i do say so myself.

Best satan (for me) is a tie: The aforementioned Peter Stormare was great, and Viggio Mortensen in The Prophecy was very chilling- perched on the wall, eating a rose- "I'll fill your mouth with feces and lay you out." I loved Morgan Freeman as God in the "Almighty" movies- simple and content but immediately gaining respect from those around him. Freeman is one of the few actors that can pull that off before he even speaks. spacemonkey, I would be interested in seeing God in a dramatic movie too. That movie sounds interesting, gonna see if I can find it. On these shots from Stephen Kings The Stand, we can see Satan clearly, unfortunately only gods hand appears on this film, via a super cheesy special effect: Thats another thing from god appearing in certain movies, sometimes we just see his "power" since he is so powerful we cant even see him. BTW, on the bible it states that if any human being would see god he would die, so Im guessing that has something to do with it as well. And this was hands down the worst rendition Ive ever seen of the devil! Jane Fonda sucked in Ghost Rider! Im still trying to forget it:

Don't know if any of you have watched this but I caught it a very long time ago on VHS and have been looking for it on disk. Jeff Goldblum as the devil himself. Mister Frost is a 1990 psychological thriller film starring Jeff Goldblum as Frost (his first name is never given), a superficially charming but deeply sinister patient in a mental asylum. At the film's beginning a police detective (Alan Bates) visits Frost's palatial French estate to investigate a string of killings, and Frost, with very little prompting, cheerfully admits that he has many bodies buried in his yard. Frost is then placed in an asylum where he doesn't speak for two years, and during this time the police are unable to establish his identity and the detective becomes obsessed by Frost and his crimes. Frost's long silence is broken when he encounters Sarah Day (Kathy Baker), a new doctor at the asylum. Frost tells her that he is, in fact, Satan, and announces that he plans to goad her into murdering him. Day is reluctant to believe he is...
