This movie, by fay, is my favorite of all time. Every shot, every scene, every high and low that the charachters goes through, touches deep inside your heart. I can't speak on how great this movie is with just words - the movie can only be truely enjoyed by viewing it. I loved the acting in this, also. All the characthers in here broke my heart, especially the ending, Ellen Bursytn dream of her kid, even though it's clear that there is no help left, is heartbreaking. This is one of the greatest films ever, I feel. | | Static Link |

The story and the dialogue keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wonder how much more fucked up these peoples lives could be. This is the most depressing film ever made. The writing really made me feel for the characters and by the end, I felt like killing myself. Another part of what makes this movie so effective is the awesome acting by everyone in the movie. They were all so effective at portraying their characters that I really understood them individually. Also, the direction by Darren Aronofsky is sheer brilliance. The editing techniques and the camera angles were some of the most innovative of anything I have ever seen. Requiem for a Dream is the perfect film to kill a good mood. 10/10 | | Static Link |

This movie doesn't just prove a point, it beats it into your skull with a vengeance. And the point that this movie is trying to make is that drugs fuck up your life in every aspect. It's not cool, and it's not glamorous. It's the exact opposite. I swear they should show this film in high schools around the world. So if you're thinking about doing drugs, watch this movie first. I give it up to all the actors in this movie. Not one of them shined above the rest. They were all equally great. I was surprised to see Marlon Wayans do such a great job in a dramatic film (Watch Scary Movie and find out what I mean). Kudos to him. And Ellen Burnstyn was phenomenal. She deserved the oscar nod. It's a shame she didn't win though. I also like the camera work in it. Especially the close ups of the eyes dialating. That was very smart. I enjoyed this film a lot, except that it's one of those movies that are so depressing that I can only watch it once... | | Read Entire Entry |

It's not one of those I'd like to watch again though - once is enough, or maybe once a year when my memory of it has past. Very disturbing, depressing, and realistic. The acting and directing was incredible. Very good film that, like the basketball diaries, should be shown in school as the ultimate anti-drug campaigns. | | Static Link |

While it depressed, disturbed, and almost nauseated me, I still think its superb. I really felt for the characters and their struggle with addiction. Eventhough you can sense how it is going to end, you hope for the best for them. The acting, the filming, every aspect of this film is done exquistely. The final montage of the character's conclusions is one the heaviest scenes I have ever seen. Also check out the interview with Hubert Selby (he did the screenplay and wrote the novel the film was based on) which is on the DVD. A must see. This movie resinates long after it's viewed. Don't know if I can give it 9/10, but at least an 8.5/10. | | Static Link |

Well, whether or not they find out is a different subject. Darren Aranofsky uses every type of camera angle, editing, sound effects to visualize drug addiction; paranoia, hell, even food consumption comes into this category and the effects of watching this wonder of filmmaking is trippy as hell. This movie is basically watching these people go from good to bad to worse to why don't you kill me now. And along that journey we see some Hitchcock, Kubrick, Peckinpah, maybe even a little Kurosawa type of filmmaking - and I'm big fans of all of the above (not so much Kubrick, but definitely the rest). It actually started getting painful to watch. It felt like the makers of this movie were actually on drugs when I watched this thing - it's that freakin trippy. I'm pretty sure the message is don't do drugs, but in one example of addiction the drugs aren't illegal - but prescription/medicated. The best sequence is this movie is when he is runing down the ally and the camara is shaking and he is screaming, that scene was original and just Phenomenal. Never have I felt so physically drained after watching a movie. I couldn't get it out of my head and watched it again the next day. Outstanding performances from everyone but Marlon Waynes was the big surprise for me. I've only seen him in poor comedies and didn't think much of him until I saw this. This film had it all for me - top class acting, direction and an excellent soundtrack. The shots using the camera fixed to the actors (especially Wayans) and the speeded up scene with Ellen Burstyn cleaning the apartment while the sun sets is amazing. From the clever "hip-hop montages" to the frantic climax, this is a must-see movie for any true movie-lovers. Be excited! Be-be excited! We have a winner! | | Static Link |

We are given the view of humanity at its worse. Its confronting, its intense. By the end of it I could barely breathe. Aronofsky is a major talent, his adaption of a very treasured piece of underground literature is near perfect. His film making has a very obvious, at times admittedly stilted, but it massively increases the impact of the themes he has dealt with in this film and his last Pi -- paranoia, devastation and addiction. His handling of the drug taking scenes are masterful, imagery is sharp and flowing. A trip out scene, a red dress dream and an intense finale montage are all presented with such an impressive ability it could make you believe in film making again even if you had watched Jurassic Park 3, Joe Dirt and The Sweetest Thing back to back. Obviously the performances are revolutionary, Burstyn can die happy to know what she has created in her performance -- perfection. Desperation has never been so better communicated. I won't bother writing a plot summary since it's already been mentioned. The amazing performances by all four of the leads, w/ some solid supporting work by Keith David as a sleasy pimp Big Tim, and Christopher Guest as self-help guru Tappy Tibbons all make this one great movie, even when they careen to their final destinations all the more powerful. (bekelley@longwood.edu) Adapted from Hubert Selby Jr's novel, "Requiem for a Dream" did what the previous adaptation of a Selby novel, "Last Exit to Brooklyn" failed to do: allow an audience to feel for it's characters. "Last Exit to Brooklyn" contained similarily depressing situations, run down lives spriling out of control. "Requiem for a Dream", though, allows us to join in the characters hopes and dreams before it pulls the carpert out from under us. The highlight of the movie, and a true delight in the celebration of great acting, is definitely Ellen Burstyn (Sara Goldfarb). Sara Goldfarb is a Jewish widow addicted to television and chocolate. Burstyn becomes Sara in a performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination which she should have easily won. The crack in her voice when she says, "I just wanted to be on the show!" made me sob. Her son, Harry (Jared Leto) is a drug addict. His girlfr... | | Read Entire Entry |

The acting is just breaktaking, moving, disturbing, tear-jerking, and overall brilliant. Ellen Burstyn give the best performance by a lead female ever. It still boggles me that she lost to "Erin Brocovich's" Julia Robberts, but after some serious counseling, I got over it, just kidding. Jennifer Connelly was totally snubbed along with Jared Leto, who prove themselves as actors w/ award diserving roles. Even Marlon Waynes was fantastic and Oscar-Worthy. This film has the best cast ever! Requiem For A Dream is not for anyone who is easily disturbed or has a weak stomache, because RFAD gives a harsh and disturbing look on the world of drugs. Requiem is the best movie of 2000, and one of the ten (#3) on my all-time top ten list!

There aren't any bad things that I can say about this film. The acting was incredible! One performance in particular, is the one given by Ellen Burstyn. She was awesome! she approached her character perfectly. now that i've seen the fim, i'm fucking pissed that she didn't win best actress. that bitch julia roberts could learn a few things from her
this movie contained one other thing that made it good. the best fuckin directing tht i've ever seen in any movie ever. the way the movie is shown, with the flashes of images, was a perfect add on to the seriousnous of the film. in a sense, you could say that the way these images are shown, they could resemble the emotions and feelings of the characters. i give Darren Aronofsky a standing applause for this film. inmy minds, it was perfect.

This is not a pleasant or enjoyable film to sit through. It is, however, very powerful on all fronts. Brutally honest and unflinching in its portrayal of the drug culture in the United States, this film is one that will stay with you. The acting is superb. You can truly believe the actors are junkies. You feel their pain and you can almost feel their cravings. Rarely has pain been this palpable on the big screen before. 8/10 | | Static Link |

The plot is simple enough about four people whose lives are changed for the worse due to drugs. But the trip that director/writer Darren Arronofsky takes you on is an unforgettable one at the least. The split-camera view was effective, as were the many, many quick cuts. This is a simple story made perfect by beautiful direction and unbelievable acting. All four of our main actors (Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans) play their roles flawlessly, but I still can't get over Ellen Burstyn's performance. She displays her character's transformation from a happy mother to a crazy old woman as if it was all real. The whole cast brings an unbelievably realistic performance to the table. This movie can be enjoyed as visual splendor, but believe me, at the end, you will have trouble holding back the tears.
